Editorial Reviews

From the Publisher

Just as there are guidelines and information that help a newly dry alcoholic shift from the depression and resentment of a "dry drunk" to the acceptance and enjoyment of sobriety, this book will offer direction and insight to those problem eaters still suffering from a dieting mentality--their own brand of a dry drunk.

The same solutions and tools that are used in arresting alcoholism are presented as a "map" to facilitate the problem eater in moving from the depressing cycle of out-of-control eating, over-controlled eating, to the serenity and sanity of continuous abstinence from compulsive eating.

Whereas dieting can create a bondage to the insanity of a "dry drunk," abstinence from random, compulsive, overeating or undereating can offer "sobriety"--a sane and sound way to address and arrest addictive eating.

Just as alcoholics can now be offered the hope and promise of recovery, people with any and all expressions of eating disorders can also be invited to believe that they, too, can experience a full recovery.

This book forms the foundation to freedom with "diet," exercise and body image.

This book forms the foundation to freedom with "diet," exercise and body image.
This book has formed the foundation that has allowed me to maintain an average body size and shape for the last 9 years. It has freed me from going on crazy diets and then eating everything I deprived myself of with reckless abandon only to put on more weight. A cycle I lived in for most of my life. I also am free from all methods of calorie purging - my most common one being exercise. I got to the place with exercise that I had to run marathons to purge excess calories. Today based on the model outlined in this book I eat a wide variety of foods, exercise a few times a week and I have a regular size body. I highly recommend this book to anyone that has an eating disorder. My experience with eating disorders is they have a lot of angles and the information in this book clearly outlines them and addresses them. It's with much appreciation I share my experience of this book

I have read approximately 30 books on food, dieting, not dieting, body wisdom, intuitive eating, etc. Through years of trying many of the suggestions in those books, I finally realized that, yes, I have a major problem with eating normally, & the ONLY way to be sane/normal regarding food is to treat my overeating like an addiction. Becky Lu Jackson's book, for me, is exactly what I needed. I admit, it wasn't until I re-read it months after I first bought it that I was willing to listen to what Ms. Jackson was writing.
Her words on getting and keeping a "bottom line" with your food is the most helpful piece of advice I've ever heard about food/eating.
For the last few years my problem hasn't been dieting, as I know that doesn't work for people who have a legitimate eating disorder, but I have been overeating & binging steadily. I just couldn't & wouldn't be willing to look at my overeating as a serious, life-threatening problem. I hit my early 40's, & began to realize that my body will not always perform optimally(if at all!) if I kept overeating. This book is helping me get my life back, slowly.
I've tried eating according to my "body wisdom", without sucess; I just would eat whatever wasn't nailed down! If my body was so wise, why didn't it "tell" me to eat carrots or bananas when I felt like I HAD to eat, instead of sweets or chips?!
I've tried a few online forums, one of which seemed to work for awhile, until I realized that it was too vague, & didn't treat the problem of binging/overeating like the disease it is.
I've tried "just taking a long walk/bath/read a book" when I felt like eating--these are so ineffective when facing a real eating disorder that it's almost funny.
I've done threapy/counseling, which helped me in other areas of my life, but the food always came roaring back at me.
My point is that until you treat your relationship with food seriuosly & eventually life-threatening, as Ms. Jackson writes, you most likely will not be helping yourself. If you really want your life back from food, read this book!

This is a to the point book about compulsive eating. It's straight forward style & the author's personal experience with the subject make it a truly helpful book. I would recommend this to anyone who thinks they may be a bit compulsive with food , or "use" it too much to comfort themselves. Fantastic, practical & truly helpful.

I hadn't even realized how crazy my dieting had gotten until I read this.
The guilt of binging, the obsession with controlling while dieting, being depressed all day if I hadn't succeeded.
I have been in recovery for a month now thanks to this book and I feel sane again.

Becky Lu Jackson's books Dieting the Dry Drunk, Dieting the Dry Drunk Workbook and Eating Addiction Recovery Model have given me, an impulsive, compulsive over eater, a safe and sane foundation for dealing with my eating addiction. Her personal examples and clear guidance has helped me develop a way of living with an addiction and not be driven by my addiction. I whole heatedly recommend Ms. Jackson's books to those suffering with an eating addiction, as a way to break the dieting cycle and live free of the obsession to try and control an eating addiction.
