BAT WORLD SANCTUARY

The Largest Bat Sanctuary on Earth

Bat World Sanctuary is on the front line to end the mistreatment of bats. Each year we rescue hundreds of bats who might otherwise die. Lifetime sanctuary is given to non-releasable bats, including those that are orphaned, injured, and rescued from the exotic pet trade, zoos and research facilities. We are also involved in conservation efforts both locally and internationally.

Bat World was founded in 1994 and is a 501c3 non-profit, accredited organization with the Global Federation of Animal Sanctuaries.

We have a new little addition...

Early last week, staff came across a short tailed fruit bat pup hanging all alone, cold and with no mother in sight. A caretaker immediately rushed the baby into the clinic, and got him warming up in a ready to go incubator. One of our most recent rescues included a number of pregnant females, and it seems one slipped past our intial examination. While bats are typically wonderful mothers, some species are more prone to dropping pups than others, which is one of many reasons we neuter our males to discourage breeding in our non-releaseable fruit bat colony.

This little pup has been named "Scrumpy" by staff, and is currently being hand-raised. He is now just about two weeks old, and is doing wonderfully with our caretakers. Once he is old enough to be flying, we will slowly reintroduce him to his colony, where he will spend the rest of his life. Any non-releasable bat that comes into the sanctuary is here forever, as bats form extremely close bonds with their roostmates.

All of this is thanks to our supporters! You allow us to offer the very best care that we can to bats like little Scrumpy, and it just wouldn't be possible if it wasn't for your support. Baby bat season is just a few weeks away for our native species, and soon dozens upon dozens of pups will be coming into care. That means months of individual care for each baby, and along with that comes expenses for things like formula, medical care and supplies, mealworms, enrichment, and transport costs. It all quickly adds up, and we are so extremely grateful for the assistance you provide in keeping us going. The more support we have, the more bats we can save! THANK YOU! #SaveTheBats

Ms. Batholomew, a rescued evening bat, is on the path to a full recovery and eager to rejoin her colony. Though, she is currently living it up here in her temporary home, she is working on mastering her flight skills and building confidence so that she can once again be returned to the wild. 🤗

Happy #batbootyfriday 🦇

Footloose, the rescued Mexican freetail was one of our non-releasable orphans from last year’s pup season.

Due to her missing foot, she isn’t able to groom some areas of her self easily, but that’s no problem! Staff is more than happy to help her groom, and she enjoys getting good scritches. You can see that little back leg going crazy! We had to get a cutie patootie shot of it for you all today.❤️

*Never touch a bat bare handed! We are trained and vaccinated to handle bats. Wildlife rehabilitators sometimes forego gloves to gain better tactile sensitivity when caring for tiny patients 😊

Happy Volunteer Appreciation Week! ❤️🦇

We here at Bat World wanted to take a minute to say THANK YOU to all of our amazing volunteers!

From sweeping and moping to passing out treats, the dedication and kindness our volunteers bring to the sanctuary helps make this the peaceful and loving home for our bats deserve after being rescued from such horrible conditions. Your help also allows us staff members more time to focus on things like administering medications and rescues.
To all of our volunteers, old and new, we greatly appreciate all the hard work you do for us. Let's all give them a round of applause!

Lawns are growing like crazy this time of year and the taller the grass gets, the harder it is to notice downed bats or other wildlife.

Bats can end up grounded for many reasons, such as an injury, or perhaps they were chased out of a tree by a crow or blue jay. They can even end up grounded in your yard where they may be stuck! A mother tree roosting bat will try to protect her babies by spreading her wings over them like in the photo below. Some bats have a very hard time taking flight from off the ground, or they may be injured or exhausted. All of these things make it impossible for a bat to get away from danger such as pets, other wild animals, or worse, a lawn mower!

During these warm months, please check your yard before mowing or doing yard work for any downed bats. If you do find a bat do not attempt to touch it with your bare hands! Please call Bat World Sanctuary at 940-325-3404 for further instructions and we will help you find a rescuer in your area!

Our Florida girls say-
“We may be fruit bats, but we sure do love some crisp, crunchy lettuce! I think we will spend the evening snacking, how about you?” 😁
