Texans' Juice Scruggs: Making impression at OTAs
    9h ago

Scruggs has been impressive at the Texans' organized team activities, Aaron Wilson of click2houston.com reports.

A hamstring injury led to a slow start for Scruggs' rookie campaign in 2023, but he ultimately shook it off in the latter half of the season. The Penn State product and second-round draft pick started six of the final seven games as a replacement at left guard. He has reportedly made noticeable improvements in the weight room this offseason and is visibly bigger, stronger and more mobile. Although he filled in at guard last year, Scruggs projects to start at center entering the upcoming season.

Johnson (knee) is participating in the Chiefs' organized team activities, Matt McMullen of the Chiefs' official site reports.

Johnson has apparently recovered from a torn ACL that caused him to miss the entire 2023 season. The 2022 seventh-round pick will now try to earn a depth role in the secondary for the defending Super Bowl champs.

Commanders' Jamin Davis: Could take reps at edge rusher
    1d ago

Coach Dan Quinn said Thursday the Commanders are providing Davis (shoulder) an opportunity to compete for edge-rusher snaps this offseason, Kevin Patra of NFL.com reports.

Quinn said "we're trying to really push [Davis] specifically on the versatility," and that "you'll see him working some with the defensive line, you'll see him working with [pass rush specialist] Ryan Kerrigan on the side." Davis is entering a contract season after having his fifth-year option declined, and the additions of Bobby Wagner and Frankie Luvu raise questions about the extent of his role. Also contributing as a pass rusher on at least a rotational basis would help boost Davis' fantasy ceiling in IDP formats. He underwent season-ending shoulder surgery back in December, but it appears that Davis has already resumed taking reps at spring practices.

Patriots' Jacoby Brissett: Earns praise of offensive coordinator
    1d ago

Patriots offensive coordinator Alex Van Pelt noted Tuesday that Brissett has had an "exceptional spring" while showing "great command of the offense," Mike Reiss of ESPN reports.

While Drake Maye, who the team selected third overall in April's draft, has made a favorable impression on New England's coaching staff to date, Van Pelt reiterated that at this time, Brissett remains the starter as next week's mandatory minicamp approaches. Though Maye is destined to rise to the top of the depth chart down the road, Van Pelt has stressed that there's no timetable for that eventuality, noting that "it's a process. It's a marathon. We're going to take our time and do it the right way." In the meantime, Brissett figures to continue to handle the bulk of first-team practice reps followed by Maye, with Bailey Zappe and rookie Joe Milton also in the Patriots' signal-caller mix.

49ers' Elijah Mitchell: Still the No. 2 back
    1d ago

Mitchell remains the clear No. 2 running back for San Francisco, David Lombardi of The Athletic reports.

Lombardi notes that the Niners have a history of trading backup running backs (Matt Breida, Jeff Wilson) when they're happy with their depth at the position. That could be an option this summer, though it's not necessarily likely, with Mitchell in the final year of his contract and a pair of rookies (fourth-round pick Isaac Guerendo, UDFA Cody Schrader) getting work at minicamp. The 49ers also have returning veteran Jordan Mason, but he's mostly played special teams and has never managed to move above Mitchell on the depth chart when Mitchell's been healthy. The long-term plan probably entails Guerendo taking over as the No. 2 RB behind Christian McCaffrey, but Mitchell looks on track to handle the role again this season.

White Sox's Nick Nastrini: Falls short of first win
    3m ago

Nastrini came away with a no-decision in Saturday's 6-1 win over the Red Sox, allowing one run on two hits and five walks over 4.1 innings. He struck out five.

He got lifted after 87 pitches (42 strikes) following a Bobby Dalbec homer in the top of the fifth inning that gave Boston a 1-0 lead, preventing Nastrini from recording his first big-league win when Chicago erupted for five runs in the bottom of the frame. Control remains a significant issue for the rookie right-hander, and he's walked at least four batters in three of four starts since his late May promotion. The rebuilding White Sox seem inclined to live with his growing pains though, so Nastrini will carry an 8.39 ERA, 1.99 WHIP and 19:25 K:BB through 24.2 innings into his next outing, which lines up to come on the road next week in Seattle.

Henderson iced the game for Baltimore in the ninth inning, swatting a three-run shot to right field to give the team a 5-0 lead. The long ball was his 20th of the campaign, second-most in the majors behind Aaron Judge. Henderson has reached base safely via hit or walk in 17 straight games and is batting .258 with four home runs, 11 RBI, 14 runs, a stolen base and an 18:20 BB:K during that span.

Abbott (5-5) went five innings, allowing one run on five hits while walking four and striking out five Saturday vs the Cubs

Abbott struggled a bit with his command in this one as he tied a season-high with four walks but still managed to get through five innings to get the win. Abbott has now won four of his last six starts and has allowed two runs or fewer in 10 of his 13 starts thus far. The 25-year-old lefty has been a key cog in the Reds rotation this year, and he will take a 3.28 ERA into his start vs the first-place Brewers next week.

Red Sox's Rafael Devers: Won't play Sunday

Devers was removed from Saturday's 6-1 loss to the White Sox with left knee soreness and won't play in Sunday's series finale, Sean McAdam of MassLive.com reports. He went 0-for-2 with a walk before exiting.

Manager Alex Cora said post game that Devers reported soreness in his left knee -- the same knee that forced Devers to miss nearly a week in late April -- which led to Devers' removal in the eighth inning. Cora will play it safe with the stud third baseman, giving him a day off Sunday. The Red Sox have a team day off Monday, so Devers' return to the lineup should come Tuesday against Philadelphia.

Red Sox's Bobby Dalbec: Swats first homer of 2024
    9m ago

Dalbec went 1-for-3 with a walk and a solo home run in Saturday's 6-1 loss to the White Sox.

Getting the start in right field and batting seventh, the 28-year-old took Nick Nastrini deep in the fifth inning for Boston's only offense, and Dalbec's first long ball in the majors this season. He's flashed plenty of power in the minors -- in his last 140 games for Triple-A Worcester, he's slugged 41 homers -- but that hasn't yet translated to the game's highest level with any consistency. He'll lose playing time, and likely his spot on the 26-man roster, when players like Tyler O'Neill (knee), Wilyer Abreu (ankle) and Masataka Yoshida (thumb) are back in action, as Dalbec's .159/.243/.238 slash line in 28 games for the Red Sox makes a poor case to keep him around.

Red Sox's Jarren Duran: Pilfers two bags in loss

Duran went 0-for-3 with two walks and two stolen bases in Saturday's 6-1 loss to the White Sox.

The 27-year-old did his job as the leadoff man, but the hitters in the three spots behind him in the order went a combined 0-for-11 on the afternoon. Duran came into this series in Chicago having failed to steal a bag in 14 straight games, but he's swiped three in the last two contests to give him 14 on the season. He's also slashing .263/.331/.451 on the year with five homers, 27 RBI and 39 runs in 65 contests.

Kings' Sasha Vezenkov: Wants out of Sacramento

Vezenkov has informed the Kings he does not plan on returning for the second year of his contract, Mihalis Stefanou of eurohoops.net reports.

Vezenkov has a guaranteed contract for the 2024-25 season without an option, so it is possible that the Kings could waive him in the offseason. It is unclear whether the 28-year-old will remain in the NBA or make a return to Europe. Vezenkov logged his first action in the NBA last season with Sacramento and averaged 5.4 points, 2.3 rebounds and 0.5 assists across 12.2 minutes in 42 appearances.

Celtics' Al Horford: Plays well in Game 1

Horford totaled 10 points (4-8 FG, 2-5 3Pt), seven rebounds, three assists and two blocks over 30 minutes during Thursday's 107-89 victory over the Mavericks in Game 1 of the NBA Finals.

With the benches emptying near the end of the fourth quarter and Kristaps Porzingis making his return, Boston needed just 30 minutes out of Horford. In the seven games leading up to Thursday, Horford had averaged 34.6 minutes with only one day of rest between in-series games. Now, the Celtics and Mavericks don't face off again until Sunday, and then Wednesday. That gives the 38-year-old more rest than he's been used to lately, which could help him stay more effective when he's needed the most.
