LAWSON PARK OPEN WEEKENDS - BOOKING NOW LIVE!

WHOOP!
Celebrate 15 years of Lawson Park's rebirth as our iconic artists' residency, and join us on June 22 & 23rd and Sept 7 & 8th (11am - 5pm both days). Tours (house & gardens), cakes, oddities, snakes too probably.

We've got not much parking, so please reserve a place ahead of time if you have to drive to us - otherwise the walk up from East Of Lake road (30-40mins) is beautiful, and cycling to us too is a great idea. Make a day of it if you're a garden fan and check out our neighbours Brantwood too.

All the info you need for both weekends is here.

Learn Stuff at The Farmer's Arms

Our new (ish) gaff is doing really well. Brilliant menus of locally-sourced goodies to enjoy. Craft for sale, like these tankards. Wednesday evening Soup Talks with great speakers. Tom's got an evening class in woodworking with spaces still available here.

Only just finished this ceramic headstone for old Tom in the bluebell woods at Lawson Park -
now also the prototype for a mausoleum for the late Bailey of @thefarmersarms_
Tom’s headstone still awaits the inscription ‘Tomas Bata IV (2002 - 2023) lived and worked here.’
Hopefully the human Batas won’t mind.

@reluctantgeorge We’ve a lightweight open basket-y structure of oak that’s been used in many shows as a support / picture hanging system
of much versatility, designed by @tomphilipson & appeared at @hauserWirth Somerset (c pic) & @IMMAIreland - even been made by @SweetWaterFDN in the US. https://t.co/rhTBrbWgBr

Whose poo is this - found in Grizedale Forest? About 8cm long, very grey / moist with smooth extruded quality and whitish end. https://t.co/x8opyj0gry

@jackwallington Hi Jack we have the widest / heftiest Stihl cordless available, with interchangeable chargeable battery, we cut the ‘beer meadow’ @TheFarmersArms_ with it and it’s tough pasture. Not quite as bombproof as a petrol rotary but way nicer for the mowing person and folks nearby

After a steamer of a day in Lawson Park garden it’s a joy to finally label this Italian heritage pear in the now cool and serene Brexit Orchard.
Thanks to South Lakes Orchard Group for grafting all these amazing trees and to our volunteers for crafting these fine and hopefully durable labels.

🚨DEADLINE FOR APPLICATIONS EXTENDED 🚨 for our next Volunteer Placements. We are seeking 3 residential volunteers to join us from Monday October 10th 2022 until Friday October 25th 2022 (with a day-off on Sunday October 16th) or from Monday Nov. 14th 2022 until Friday Nov. 25th 2022 (with a day-off on Sunday 20th).

To best match our planned activities, we invite applicants with particular skills and experience in any of the following: Hospitality, event management, gardening / horticulture, cooking / preserving, community engagement.

Volunteers-in-residence will split their time between our new venture @thefarmersarms_ with its cafe, bar, dining. retail and workshop spaces, and Lawson Park, our smallholding and artists’ residency above Coniston Water on the edge of Grizedale Forest.

Applicants should have an adaptable, flexible attitude and an interest in practicing and enabling the everyday creativity at the heart of Grizedale Arts ethos.

Based first at The Farmer’s Arms, volunteers will take hands-on roles in the kitchens, workshops, accommodation and front of house spaces, assisting on a wide range of activities with visiting contributors from the arts and related sectors, and engaging with the general public.

At Lawson Park, volunteers will help with land management, seasonal garden maintenance, harvesting and preserving, and many other tasks in our exceptional gardens. These are managed on a no dig, organic basis, so this is a fantastic opportunity to gain hands on experience in a beautiful, challenging site, learning from artist and Head Gardener Karen Guthrie, who has developed the garden from scratch over two decades.

The volunteer residencies will also include time spent contributing to online research, web site development and archival work relating to Grizedale Arts’ wide-ranging current and future projects, and to our extensive archive. Throughout the residencies volunteers will work alongside our team of Adam Sutherland, Emma Sumner, Karen Guthrie, Tom Philipson and Alistair Debling, assisted by our freelancers and part-time staff.
