Dr. Jonathan Berkey
Professor of History

“When I came to interview at Concord, I fell in love with the natural beauty of the region and the friendly people at Concord and in the surrounding area.” More than just teaching about the past, Dr. Berkey wants to teach his students how to think like historians do – evaluating evidence, making sense of conflicting information, reading sources closely and carefully, and asking critical questions of those sources. “These are skills that will be helpful to students regardless of their career path,” he says. As a department, Dr. Berkey and the faculty are working to give students more choices and flexibility by trying to offer all courses online and in the classroom setting.

Summer McElwain
Class of 2021

Summer McElwain attended Concord University from 2018-2021, graduating with a Bachelor of Science in biology. As part of her CU experience, she participated in PATCH (Pre-professional Association Towards Careers in Health), which provides students with resources to make informed decisions about future careers in healthcare. Upon graduation, she went to the WV School of Osteopathic Medicine to continue her studies. Her most memorable experience at Concord was working in the bookstore. “I really enjoyed getting to see faculty, staff and students in a different environment. That experience really helped me open up and adjust to college.” Summer’s sister is currently attending Concord, and participates on the esports team.
