Despite the focus on the upcoming Men’s T20 World Cup, West Indies Women’s captain Hayley Matthews is gearing up to help West Indies Women win their second T20 World Cup five months from now.

While the Caribbean and the USA will jointly host the highly anticipated men’s event from June 1 to 29, the Women’s World Cup will bowl off on October 3 in Bangladesh.

West Indies Women lifted their first and only World Cup title in 2016 when they defeated favourites Australia by eight wickets in Kolkata, India.

On that occasion, a then 18-year-old Matthews smashed 66 off just 45 deliveries to lead them to victory with three balls remaining.

In an interview with Barbados TODAY on the sidelines of a presentation to the Barbados Royals Girls Cricket Club at Friendship on Tuesday, Matthews, the number one ranked women’s T20 allrounder in the world, said winning the T20 World Cup was one of her main goals for 2024.

Jamaica

ATISHAI Mansingh, director and co-founder of Cricket Cave, says his organisation is on a mission to revitalise cricket in Jamaica through facility development and fan engagement.

On one hand, he wants the transformation of the indoor practice nets at the famous Sabina Park in Kingston to first class standards. But in the immediate, Mansingh pointed to the setting up a Fan Zone in the North Lounge at Sabina Park for the three-match West Indies-South Africa Twenty20 International series from May 23-26.

He said Fan Zone ticket holders will have access to comfortable amenities, including a designated parking place, a bar, diverse food vendors, music, and domino tables.

“We’re taking over the indoor nets at Sabina Park and creating it into a first class, international standard facility. Lighting, a lounge area, we’ll have a youth academy and everything to bring back an area where, in day or night-time, people can come and play cricket,” Mansingh told the Jamaica Observer.

World Cup

Iconic fast bowler, Sir Curtly Ambrose said West Indies have enough firepower to win an unprecedented third ICC Men’s Twenty20 World Cup when they co-host the tournament next month with the United States.

The former West Indies bowling coach said recent results against powerhouses South Africa, India, and England under the captaincy of Rovman Powell have raised his optimism about the team’s chance of success.

“We have a very, very good team,” Sir Curtly said during the launch of the Nassau County International Cricket Stadium earlier this week in the United States.

“As we speak, they (West Indies) are in Antigua at a camp preparing themselves for the start of the T20 World Cup which is a couple of weeks away. I believe once the guys start playing consistent cricket and smart cricket, I believe we can take the trophy.”
