K-9 Matka retires after eight years at the State Capitol
For eight and a half years, Minnesota State Patrol K-9 Matka has walked the halls of the Minnesota State Capitol, keeping her nose sharp and sniffing for explosive material. This week, she's hanging up her working collar in exchange for the good life of a family pet. Over the years Matka has kept workers and visitors safe by checking out Capitol buildings for threats, responding to calls about suspicious or unattended bags, and doing bomb sweeps. “While she's definitely earned her time to relax, she's also been a popular and friendly face for everyone in the Capitol. Everyone is going to miss her," State Patrol Col. Christina Bogojevic said.

Become a better rider: Invest in your skills — and your safety — this motorcycle season
May is Motorcycle Safety Awareness Month in Minnesota. And let's be honest, motorcycle safety messaging can seem very repetitive: Wear a helmet. Ride sober. Don't speed. Some riders listen, some unfortunately don't. Three motorcyclists have already been killed on our roads this year, and fatalities have increased in recent years. And yes — helmet use, speed and impairment are often contributors. But ultimately, the skill of the rider can be a determining factor in preventing crashes that lead to injury and death.
The best way to improve your skills? Take a rider training course. Learn more about the
importance of rider training and how to register.
State Patrol kicks off Rural Speed Reduction Project and other enforcement efforts
Ask any law enforcement officer, including our Minnesota State Patrol troopers, and they'll share that one of the worst parts of their job is telling someone that their loved one is never coming home.
Troopers, deputies and officers are having to deliver that devastating news at an alarming rate with fatal crashes up almost 40 percent over this time last year. That's one of the reasons the Minnesota State Patrol has started a new initiative to help stop dangerous speeding on rural high-risk roadways.

Rural Speed Reduction Project and other enforcement efforts in our DPS blog.
