Gloucester Police Department to Strictly Enforce Sidewalk Parking Regulations; Urging Community to Cooperate

In response to increasing public safety concerns, the Gloucester Police Department announces it will begin strictly enforcing regulations against sidewalk and crosswalk parking.

This measure comes after Gloucester City Council’s decision on Feb. 13, to increase the fines for these infractions from $25 to $100.

The decision to enforce these regulations is based on numerous complaints received from the community, particularly from pedestrians with baby carriages who are compelled to navigate into the streets, posing significant safety risks.

Chief Edward Conley stated, “While we recognize that certain areas in the city, especially along East Main Street, have historically been lenient towards these violations, the surge in complaints suggests an increase in pedestrian traffic. The safety of our residents and visitors cannot be compromised.”

To ensure the public is aware and can adjust accordingly, the Gloucester Police Department will initiate a public service announcement campaign. This will include temporary signage prominently displayed along East Main Street, alerting residents and visitors to the upcoming changes in enforcement policy.

Strict enforcement will commence starting Memorial Day weekend, allowing the community time to familiarize themselves with the changes.

The Gloucester Police Department is committed to ensuring the safety and well-being of all community members and appreciates the public’s cooperation in adhering to these necessary regulations.

COMPLIMENTARY

WINE TASTING WITH CASEY GRUTTADAURIA OF IDEAL WINES

Ideal is an importer and distributor of fine wine and spirits based in Medford, Massachusetts. The company’s roots go back to 1905, when Samuel Bender and two partners founded a retail wine and provisions store in Boston, which evolved in the years after WWII into one of the city’s premiere fine wine shops. It was in the late 1970s that Larry Bender, the third generation of his family in the business, decided to strike out on his own, separating the importing business from his father’s retail operation. His goal was to import small high-quality wineries directly to the Massachusetts market, wines that had previously only come through national importers, if they were imported at all. Most of the wines at that time were French, but the company soon expanded its Italian selections, and has since rounded out the book with some American wineries as well as wines from other countries. Ideal brings us wine with a strong sense of place, made with minimal intervention, at a great price. Casey is one of our favorite wine reps as he is engaging and very educated in these unique, boutique wines. Come out and enjoy them with him as your host!

WINES

(All new to Savour and introduced here for the first time)

Loersch Riesling Blauschiefer Troken (dry), 2022

Weingut Loersch, nestled into hills of Devonian slate just outside the town of Leiwen and overlooking inclines as precipitously steep as 70°, is on the very cutting edge of an ongoing renaissance of German wine. Winemaker Alexander Loersch walks a tightrope between modernity and tradition. The Loersch family can trace their lineage in winemaking and viticulture back to 1640, but had no issue pivoting to modern winemaking. The generational expertise in the vineyard and winery is on full display in their Riesling bottlings: each iteration among the most pristine, structured, and balanced in its category. The grapes for the Blauschiefer Riesling come from the Leiwener Klostergarten. A sparkling dark blue slate gives this wine its name. As basic Riesling, this wine is already excellent. Made with spontaneous fermentation in stainless steel, the Blauschiefer (blue slate) Riesling shows up with a crispy minerality – a fine nuance of saltiness from the slate, exquisite dry and perfect citrus fruitiness. A refreshing acidity makes this wine a wonderful summer Riesling. It pairs well with seafood, brunch, and sunshine. Alc. 11.5%, $19.99

Adams Wein Ingelheim Weissburgunder (Pinot Blanc),Rheinhessen, Germany 2021

AdamsWein’s “Ingelheim” category offers wines produced according to biodynamic principles that express the excellence of the Ingelheim terroir. The Weissburgunder (Pinot Blanc) is made with conscientious craftsmanship in every detail. The wine goes through wild fermentation and is matured in large oak casks and then stainless steel on the yeast lees until bottled. The wine is unfiltered, unfined, and has no additions, making it a clean and natural wine. It has a complex nose of orange and lemon peel, wild herbs, and a touch of flint. The palate also carries these flavors along with a weighty mouth feel and stacks of chalky minerality that accentuate the freshness of the long finish. It will pair well with seafood, vegetarian, and egg dishes. Alc. 12.5%. $24.99

Michel Thibaut Domaine, Cotes Du Jura, Chardonnay, 2022

Michel Thibaut, a winemaker in the Jura since 1989, developed his own wine estate with his wife in 2014 in the small town of Poligny on “La route des Vins du Jura.” In 2018, Hubert, the eldest son, joined the family winery after having worked at different vineyards in the Costières de Nîmes, where he was cellar master at Châteaude la Tuilerie, owned by Chantal Comte. The wines of the Michel Thibaut estate have been produced with the same philosophy for more than twenty-five years to obtain Côtes du Jura wines that are rich in flavor and accessible. This Chardonnay comes from “les Chevraudes.” This hillside is exposed to the southwest and comprises a thick layer of limestone scree. The wine conducts its alcoholic fermentation naturally in Burgundy barrels, followed by 10 months of maturation with topping up and stirring. It was bottled without SO2 addition. It delivers woody, buttery, flinty, apple, toasted almond aromas and flavors from its maturation on thelees. This wine pairs well with shrimp cocktail, oysters, and grilled fish. Alc. 13%, $24.99

Ferre I Catasus, Compta Ovelles, D.O. Red Blend, Penedes, Spain 2022

Compta Ovelles is a blend of organically farmed Syrah, Cabernet Sauvignon, and Merlot from vines ranging in age from 15 to 30 years. Penedes 2022 was characterized by drought, with little rain during the growing season and warm temperatures during the day. This stressed the vines and produced less fruit; however, it was of excellent quality. The grapes were mechanically harvested at night to preserve their organoleptic characteristics. In the cellar, the grapes are fermented in stainless steel at controlled temperature, gently pressed, and put into barrels for aging. The wine has a deep cherry color with violet hues and has aromas and flavors of raspberries, strawberries, and cherries. The finish is pleasant, with hints of balsamic and a balanced acidity. Alc. 13.5%, $14.99

Adams Wein Ingelheim Spatburgunder (Pinot Noir), Rheinhessen, Germany 2020

AdamsWein’s “Ingelheim” category offers wines produced according to biodynamic principles that express the excellence of the Ingelheim terroir.Dr. Simone Adams is one of the most exciting up-and-coming winemakers in the world. Not in Germany, not in Europe, but worldwide. In the Rheinhessen’s far northern stretches, just across the river from the Rheingau, the small commune of Ingelheim holds a secret forgotten by the wine world: a positively royal 1200-year history of Pinot Noir. This is a remarkable Pinot Noir with lots of autumnal complexity of underbrush, wet earth, and smoke on the nose. The palate has a structured medium body with generous tannins and strawberry and raspberry fruit notes. The long finish has a cascade of mineral and wild herb notes that complete this impressive wine’s profile. Produced using 30% whole cluster grapes, wild fermentation, and matured in a large oak barrel for a year with no filtering of fining makes this a clean and fresh wine. It will suit mushroom based dishes and white meats well. Alc. 13%  $25.99
