Throughout the course of art history, flowers have been used to represent the passage of time, purity, and love. Flowers have been a recurring motif in George Rodrigue’s work, especially his paintings of the Blue Dog. Rodrigue’s Blue Dog paintings from the 1990s onward often feature flowers both as an element of composition and as a way to symbolize the meaning of flowers within art history. In Deep Love Rodrigue painted a single red flower on the Blue Dog’s body, representing love. In this simple painting of the Blue Dog, the flower becomes an alluring point of interest in the work.

In George Rodrigue’s work, the oak tree is both a symbol of the Louisiana landscape as well as a strong compositional element in his work. In Green Oak #2, Rodrigue incorporates the pirogue to represent the ways of traversing through the landscape. This work features Rodrigue’s signature color palette which features both the darkness of the oak tree and lighter hues glowing from behind the tree and beneath the branches.

Can’t Keep My Feet On the Ground emphasizes George Rodrigue’s commitment to the formal qualities of art making. This minimalist painting features one full body Blue Dog set against a blue background. Here Rodrigue focused on the shape of the dog and the subtle difference in the shades of blue used to create the work. This painting exists alongside several others Rodrigue produced in the 1990s when he began removing the direct references to Louisiana landscapes from his Blue Dogs paintings and exploring other artistic possibilities.

This newly released silkscreen, Dog in a Box, is based on a 1990 painting by the same title, the playful scene depicts a Blue Dog in a box situated in a classic Rodrigue landscape. The painting pays homage to Rodrigue’s real life dog, Tiffany, who was originally brought home to the Rodrigue family in a box.
The Blue Dog in a box can also be understood as a larger metaphor for Rodrigue’s work. Rodrigue often spoke about the Blue Dog as a visual vehicle for him to explore new ideas and comment on contemporary culture. With that in mind, the box in this work could be referencing how Rodrigue’s Blue Dog paintings more generally as containers for his artistic expression and creative exploration.
This lithograph of Dog in a Box was created using a hand-pulled stone printmaking process. These detailed lithographs were produced in Paris, France, by a team of skilled artisans specializing in this traditional printmaking process. The resulting image does an impressive job of capturing the painterly aspects of the original work.

Based on a photograph taken by George Rodrigue, Andre` and Mr. Petro at Bat captures a warm moment between the artist’s son Andre` and Bud Petro. Bud and his brother, Norman, owned the Esso gas station across the street from Rodrigue’s first Lafayette gallery on Jefferson Street which was also his home and studio. Over the years Rodrigue developed a close friendship with the Petro brothers who were the subject of several of his paintings.
To create this painting, Rodrigue had Bud Petro pose with Andre` in the Rodrigues’ backyard. In the painting, Rodrigue replaced the real background with one of signature dark, cropped oak trees. Like many of his paintings of people, the resulting image is both a real and imagined depiction of life in Louisiana.

Cows on Parade became a worldwide phenomenon when it debuted in Chicago in the summer of 1999 after premiering in Zurich in 1998. The idea was to have artists, architects, and designers paint the fiberglass cows and exhibit them around the city. Three hundred life size cows were exhibited all over Chicago, including three painted by Rodrigue for Neiman Marcus to graze in their flower gardens on Michigan Avenue. At the conclusion of the exhibition, the cows were auctioned off and the money was donated to charitable organizations. Rodrigue requested some additional cows to paint for himself, one of which he ultimately sold to his good friend Don Sanders with a special “Texas” theme.

Rodrigue had an admiration and fascination with trains his entire life. In a small series of works in 2010, he combined this love of the shiny locomotives with his iconic Blue Dog. As he had done earlier in his Bodies series, and Swamp Dog series, Rodrigue was experimenting with photography and printmaking, using his computer to combine the painted images with color and repetitive designs. Using the scanned images from his computer, he combined the painted images with photographs, creating what he described as ‘remastered digital prints’. He released a total of four prints in this series featuring trains and the Blue Dog, all in the small edition of 10, and a very limited number of Artist Proofs.

George Rodrigue was a Louisiana painter known for his depictions of the landscape and people of Acadiana, as well as his later Pop Art paintings featuring the figure of a blue dog. This painting, “Watchdog” from 1983, was the first ever painting in what would become known as the “Blue Dog” series.

In 2019, Rodrigue Studios celebrated its 30th Anniversary! In honor of the occasion the artist’s family worked with his original master printer, Edmond de Boisblanc of Lafayette, Louisiana, to reproduce four of Rodrigue’s earliest silkscreens.
These exceptional and rare prints have been sold out and unavailable for some 25 years. The ‘new’ editions are printed using Rodrigue’s original designs, reproduced to match the early prints, but with an added ‘30 Years’ reference (XXX 2019) and the official Rodrigue Estate Stamped Signature. In addition, Gallery Edition I is altered to reflect today’s Rodrigue Studio at 730 Royal Street, unlike the earlier version showing Rodrigue Gallery of New Orleans, Inc. at 721 Royal Street.
