Now I am moving Monticello up to first place on “Places to Visit Before I Die.”

Thank you for capturing the essence of your visit, Ms. Kalman.

Christopher Lehfeldt, Rochester, NY

this is my favorite so far—what a brilliant man—your words continue to tell such great stories.

superlative.

Multitudinous kudos to you. Superb.

Thomas Jefferson, Abe Lincoln… where have you gone?
Are you out there amongst young faces? Our brave new world can sure use you guys.

Maira, you capture the essence of this complex man so surely and subtly. And in doing so, you reveal so much about what it means to be an American. As always . . . many thanks!

Wonderful and engaging. Thank you.

Your writing is wistful, poetic, and thoughtful. You always notice the details, the simple things that make all the difference.

Makes me proud to live in Charlottesville. First went to Monticello in Miss Talley’s 7th-grade history class. I got sick on the bus as it twisted up the hill toward the house. Last time I ever sat in the back.

Let us keep Mr. Jefferson in mind as we go into this 21st century. He would enjoy so much of what we take for granted. Let us not take him, what he enjoyed, what he thought, what he accomplished, for granted.

4th July, the offiicial birthday of this great, continuing, experiment.

13th April, the birthday of Mr. Jefferson, who will always be our benchmark.

This is a wonderful observation of so much of what Mr. Jefferson means.

I have been there, I have seen it, and I can only say thanks to to an infinitely rare humanist and , btw a great piece!

I would love to see an entire history of the United States, written and illustrated by Ms. Kalman.

Her work is sublime.

Monticello is one of the most inspiring places I’ve ever visited, and Jefferson by far my favorite President. Yet you have shown and taught me so much about him, and his home, that I never knew. This was beautiful. Thank you.

Absolutely outstanding. Thank you.

This is great!
I have been going to Monticello since I was 8 years old, probably been 7 or 8 times, most recently last month. I am amazed at how much I notice each time that had eluded me on earlier visits.

I look forward to next month when I will take my two boys there for the first time.

Additionally, as part of a committee to help oversee the expansion of the graveyard at Monticello I am very honored to be able to play a small role in the evolution of this special place.

always a pleasure!!!

That was beautiful, thank you.

Je t’aime.

How extraordinarily you tell the story! Thank you, ma’am — and thank YOU, editors of THE NEW YORK TIMES, for commissioning and presenting her work.

This is beautiful. Thank you very much, Ms. Kalman.

Having been to Monticello a year or two ago, I recognize every room. You’ve captured the feelings I had there beautifully. Thank you.
