I can now recommend this book for the "Lemon Herb Chicken" alone. It is not that often that you find a recipe using Herbs de Provence and I have quite a large tin filled with this herb blend from Dean and Deluca. Who knew this delicious herb blend, consisting of thyme, basil, savory, fennel and lavender, would be so delicious when combined with lemon juice. The chicken is marinated for only an hour and then it only takes thirty minutes to cook. I served it with a side of yellow summer squash.
While the chicken was quite delicious I can't say the same for the "Crisp Gingernaps." They turned out more like scones - at least the texture was about the same. There seems to be a bit of a problem with the recipe because I ended up with crumbs instead of dough. I had to add 1/4 cup milk to get the crumbs to come together into a dough. We ate the cookies but my husband wondered why I hadn't iced them.
If you are new to cooking then the first fifth of this cookbook will be very useful to you. The authors give a lot of safety tips and smart shopping tips like buying spices in bulk because they are less expensive. I should listen to this advice but I love the tins from Dean and Deluca even if they are much more expensive.
The only thing I think they could improve on in this cookbook is the instructions for making gravy. They are slightly sketchy and don't give exact measurements.
While most entrees serve two, the appetizers and desserts serve as many as 8-16. So you are going to have leftovers if you are just cooking for two.
I only paid around $8 for this book including shipping and I think finding one great recipe was worth the price. Other recipes you might enjoy include:
7-Layer Dip
Braided Scarborough Fair Bread
Chicken Basil Blue Pasta - blue cheese and basil
Black Bean Burritos
Cilantro Rice
~The Rebecca Review
-the recipes weren't very original or enticing.
-it has an odd dialogue. sort of half cookbook, half self-help book.
-if you are a visual person, you should know there are hardly any pictures.
-many recipes are for more than 2.
overall a let down. as far as cooking for 2, i recommend EatingWell serves two. it has everything this one is lacking.
As with most cookbooks, there are some recipes I like and some I don't. Overall, it's definitely worth it. Don't try just one recipe and then never use it again. Try to pick recipes that include ingredients you know you like, and try those first.
