My 5 yr old son really enjoyed this, and it helped immensely with his reading skills. The action portions can be a little difficult, but over time he mastered it. He is now 6 yrs old and still plays it even though he has had it for a while. He beats all the levels and then starts over, as he does with his other Explorer games. The cool thing about all these games is that the educational content progresses with the child. The game is the same, but the questions get more difficult as my son masters the skills.
In between skill episodes, the X-men do their fighting thing, which of course appears violent per an animated cartoon but by no means are bloody or gory. Mostly a kick or arm swing and the opposition falls down. Some of the combinations of moves are too complex for my guy, but I don't feel it's too violent.
If anything, in the few days he's had he HAS learned what suffixes sound like and how to add them, simply via experimenting and repetition. His older friends (7-9) enjoy playing with it too.
I hope you find this helpful. As with all the Leapster games, make sure you check the age range AND what the focus is...most of the time the product page will tell you if it's reading or math.

The Wolverine game concentrates on spellings for 5-9 year olds. The fact that you can customise the game via the Leapfrog website with your own choice of spellings means that my boys are now doing their school spellings whilst playing. Being a full-time working mum, and not wanting to sit my children down with school work at 6.45pm when I get home and it's nearly time for bed, means I can allow them some play time whilst still learning valuable lessons. Fabulous!!!
