Discover
Reminiscent of the hot springs that beckoned travellers over 100 years ago, the pulsating waterfalls and the mineral pool in the heart of the Banff spa soothe troubled spirits.
The Beginning
William Cornelius Van Horne had a vision to bring the beauty of the Canadian Rocky Mountains to the rest of the world. He commissioned blueprints for an impressive hotel to be built at the convergence of the Bow and Spray River, in what is now known as Canada's first National Park. Construction began in 1887 and the hotel publically opened on June 1, 1888.
By the start of the twentieth century, the Banff Springs luxury Hotel had developed into one of the top three mountain getaways in North America. Disaster struck in 1926 when the original wooden hotel burnt down. It was rebuilt larger and in its present appearance commencing in 1928.
Roaring Twenties and the Great Depression
Throughout the 1920s and 30s, the hotel was able to combine day-to-day hotel life with the concept of luxurious hotel living. The depression played a part in the 'golden era' as well.
Through the 1940s to 60s, the hotel struggled to reclaim the success it had before the war. The hotel went through a significant change, adapting to the economics of the time. Transportation, convenience and availability to monetary funds jointly changed the whole perspective of the hotel.
"Since we can't export the scenery, we'll have to import the tourists."
William Cornelius Van Horne
By the 70s, the hotel reached a pivotal point. For the first time, Banff Springs remained open for the winter season, becoming a year-round resort destination. The 80s then brought expansion and renovation back to the hotel.

Fantastic staff at check in. A wonderful Mother’s Day getaway for our whole family - top service at the spa, bars, and restaurants.
From the private check-in to the well thought out rooms, everything exceeded expectations. We thoroughly enjoyed breakfast, which was always a great way to start our day. No matter where you were on the grounds and there are so many places to explore, you always had a great view of the surrounding mountains. We will definitely be returning and would book the Fairmont Gold experience again in a heartbeat!

The property was both historical and comfortable. The staff was attentive/helpful and polite. The restaurant offerings were all very good and tasteful considering the remoteness of the property. If I had to choose an area for improvement would be the signage and directions within the property. Realizing that the hotel is sprawling and many of the buildings are interconnected intricately. My family found it difficult to figure out how to navigate the inside of the hotel however the staff was quite helpful in this regard.
nice
Everything was great. Really felt special with that birthday cake they left in the room for my daughter with her name written in gold on it. Thank you to the staff for doing that as well as the card signed by the staff. Really went above our expectations.
We just completed our annual trip to Banff to celebrate our anniversary. Everything her operates like a well-oiled machine, from arrival at valet parking to check-in to housekeeping to in-room dining (special shout out to Eliza!) to checkout. On top of that we had postcard views from our room. We will be back!
Everything was nice, I just wish some of the resort's facilities/restaurants were open later into the evening on weeknights.
I gave you the 7 rating because the room was very small. Everything at the hotel was First Class and your people were exceptional. You cannot beat the location and Banff in general. We were there on a Company trip, so we did not have a say in the room. I would pay more for a larger room and this experience would have been a "10".
The hotel was fantastic; the food in every one of the restaurants was delicious; the room was perfect!
