    My wrt54gl was bricked. powerlight blinking and no IP-number could be reached. started your trick but without succes. After (again) a lot of reading on de-bricking and thinking of trashing the thing i at last started the following
    procedure:
    1. fixated on the laptop the IP-number on 192.168.1.2 and
    2. started pinging (ping -t ) on 192.168.1.1 (os-windows-xp).
    3. opened the case and short-circuited pin 16 from the flash chip against earth and
    4. then power on. after that the ping replied (hurrah).
    5. No power off!
    6. And from there on i used your trick.
    I’am a happy person now.
    Thanks a lot.

    @ your welcome … nice to know it help

      This worked for me too!

      My model is wrt54gl v1.1 with flash “samsung 4.30.7 cs af81 k8d3*”

      Powered on while shorting pin 16 against earth (eg. the shiny antenna connection part)

      Then I could ping 192.168.1.1 (using static ip setup)

      Now the router is in fail safemode and I simply uploaded a openwrt image using tftp following http://voidmain.is-a-geek.net/redhat/wrt54g_revival.html

      If powering off you have to do the procedure again.

  10. VESI says:

    hey
    I dont get it working either. Did everything said in this tutorial, get the ping replies but when click on upgrade it just wont start upgrading. Only does a number of set replys. I’m using Windows 7

  32. wayne says:

    No chance. Device is dead again each time it has been disconnected from power.
    After TFTPing the FW, it dows not come up with an IP.
    Power-LED is good, Eth-LED blinking periodically every second. Look like some kind of broadcast.
    Reset-button kills the device immediately.

    • serangku says:

      Don’t disconnected WRT from power when flashing!
      BTW … there is another “hard methode” to revive your WRT
      it’s a like short pin the chip inside WRT …
      I’m not have link about that article, but u can use google for it
      First try u can go to dd-wrt site

  33. Tanja Lehmann says:

    Thank yout, now my router works again! I discovered, that after tftp the new image to the router, the led was flashing like before. The Webbrowser did not reach the website under 192.168.1.1, but some minutes later everything works fine, You should mention to wait some minutes. int the text “Click Upgrade. Done ! You have success ” Thankyou again!

  35. Damien says:

    • serangku says:

      Hi …
      It’s easy enough to restore from dd-wrt to original linksys firmware.
      1. Make sure u have same series as wrt54gl series.
      2. Download original linksys firmware from my link on post.
      3. Upgrade from your dd-wrt menu with linksys firmware
      4. Done

      Just curious, why u change ur dd-wrt with linksys firmware ?
      dd-wrt more advance from original firmware.

    unable to debrick …… the tftp saying unable to connect to server ….. do i have to make static both the router and laptop ………? doing so i am getting the multple gateway problem.

  39. Harw says:

    Perfect guide. Thanks man ! This really worked.

  40. Patrick says:

    For reverting back to official Linksys FW (asuming you’re on DD-WRT)

    1. Unpack the above zip file
    2. Log on to your DD-WRT (192.168.1.1)
    3. Flash the unpacked FW (.BIN) over your DD-WRT (mine was v24 SP1)
    4. Hard reset your router afterwards (holding ~10 sec reset button)

    Worked like a charm!

    it’s not working for me . i’m busy for 2 hours now … any comments ?? or help ??

  51. Robert, they vary. It’s up to your authors. Many with the letters coming up are handwritten, or hand-notated, it’s about half and half. Though most of the first letters were typed. The fourth letter was a comic.

  52. ThaPizza says:

    At this moment I remain unable to reflash my linksys wrt54gl, it currently has the wrong firmware wrt54gs.
    I think the firmware is custom made, but far outdated.
    There’s no firmware upgrade tab available, so the regular way of upgrading is not possible.
    Then I set a static IP on pc, same subnet range as router to keep the router connected.
    The router does not function properly, that’s why I tried to flash original firmware back instead, but that didn´t work out.
    Checked the hardware version vs the actual software installed and found the mismatch.

    – I tried the 30/30/30 reset method, then reflash, but that did not work out.
    – Tried Tftp failed with the error “unable to get responces from the server”
    – Tftp2 tried to connect several times to the router, but then failed with no results as well.
    – Tried to put a backup from a similar device on that specific router, but this also does not overwrite the settings.
    How do I replace the current faulty firmware with original firmware?

  59. Falko says:

    Works great – even using linux, eg. ubuntu or Debian:

    * download and unzip WRT54GL_is_Immortal.zip

    * unzip and rename firmware file to code.bin, e.g.:
    mv FW_WRT54GL_4.30.12.3_US_EN_code.bin code.bin

    * make sure, no network manager is running and no dhcp client

    * set interface ip address, to e.g. 192.168.1.22
    ifconfig eth0 inet 192.168.1.22 netmask 255.255.255.0

    * show if address is set
    ifconfig eth0

    * you can try if the router is reachable:
    ping 192.168.1.1

    * start tftp:
    tftp 192.168.1.1

    * make the following settings:
    binary
    rexmt 1
    timeout 60
    trace

    * input the following – but without pressing enter
    put code.bin

    * power off the router

    * power on the router and immediately press enter

    * you should see something like:

    sent DATA
    received ACK
    sent DATA
    received ACK
    sent DATA
    received ACK
    Sent 2941952 bytes in 58.8 seconds
    tftp> quit

    * you’re done!
