Boston Mayor and Massachusetts Representative John F. Fitzgerald, President John F. Kennedy's grandfather, was instrumental in securing funds for the restoration of USS Constitution. 🇺🇸 ⚓

Affectionately known as “Honey Fitz”, he spoke on the House floor about the Ship, "As a boy I have the pleasantest recollections of the happy days spent at the wharf where the Constitution was built over a century ago, and when I stand here pleading for the preservation of ‘Old Ironsides’ my deepest sympathies are moved.”
[Congressional Record…of the Fifty-fourth Congress, Second Session, Volume XXIX, January 14, 1897, 798]

"Our Captain so brave, as we sailed on the main, now bid us a harvest of glory to gain." Over Constitution's 225+ years, many have lyricized the ship's history: from broadsides celebrating the War of 1812 victories to Oliver Wendell Holmes' 1830 tribute "Old Ironsides." This 19th-century song sheet, titled “Hull’s Victory: or, Huzza for the Constitution,” was written to the tune of “Paul Jones’ Victory." 🎶

I would love to know how to digitize an old document like that without the light illuminating so much that it diminishes the detail. I run into this issue.

Ship for sale!?! What compelled a Boston businessman to write the Secretary of the Navy with an offer to purchase "Old Ironsides" in 1905? Our public historian Carl Herzog explains how this Armenian immigrant saw USS Constitution as a source of patriotic pride and a symbol of American freedom worth saving!
