If you're a Czech beer fan you're either a Pilsner Urquel guy or a Staropramen guy. I fall into the latter category.

Staropramen was my Bulgarian friend's favourite beer "when he was 11" which is funny, because I didn't seriously get into it until I was probably 13 or 14.

The branding seems quite upmarket compared to most of it's contemporaries. The glassware it's served in is very nice also (if you sample it on draught).

Quite a pale lager in appearance it has a very satisfying foamy head.

Overall a decent beer to enjoy on a sunny day in the park or bus stop of your choice.

Concord Brewery "Rapscallion Irish Red"
16 fl. oz. can without production codes or freshness dating

Notes via stream of consciousness: Ahh, there's a great color to this! It's darker than expected, but when you hold it to the light you can see the reddish color within the brown. In the full pint it looks very dark brown, bordering on black. The head is a finger-width cap of creamy off-white foam. The aroma is malty with caramel, a clear roastiness, and some light chocolate. The flavor follows with golden caramel, reddish colored medium caramel, roastiness, and a chocolate fudge kind of note. Some minor woody and spicy hop notes are there as well, and it's nicely balanced by a median bitterness that combines with the roastiness and spiciness to bring it to a dry conclusion. It's medium bodied and gently crisp across the palate. Except for a bit too much roasted barley this is a very nice example of the Irish Red Ale style.

I was fairly surprised by how much I enjoyed this beer. Nice golden appearance. The beer paired well with Indian brand KurKure Masala Munch crisps.

Got some cans at a reasonable price from the local off-licence.

The pleasant lemon zesty smell is also worth mentioning.

It's kinda like Corona but better.

Cobra, despite appearances, is not an Indian beer. It's brewed in the UK. Somewhere.

Cobra may not be perfect, buy it IS English which is close enough.

Fully opaque corn milk yellow with a thin but densely creamy white head that leaves small mounds of fine lacing behind.

Juicy satsuma meets a lightly cannabic, peppery dankness that is more forward than the slight hint of the gassy dankness featured in the previous release, making for a much more preferably balanced, natural flavor profile.

Through a firmly carbonated body, this is surprisingly drinkable for the ABV. I'm getting no booze at all.

a supremely well executed take on the style, as the name is not shy in suggesting, but they are right, this is dialed, clean as they come, and drinkable to high heaven, really dug it! its bright yellow, quite clear although not mirror glazed, very well carbonated with a better than standard white head on it. the aroma is earthy, well grounded, balanced, and also quite bright, uplifting and fresh, true to style but it has its own personality due to the exclusive use of a french hop called mistral that should be more prevalent than it is in beers like this. it exhibits some noble characteristics, that grassy herbal profile, but also has a more jovial citrus element, tangerine or clementine, kumquat and meyer lemon, daffodil, and honeysuckle, springy by nature, and still able to bitter this enough as well, pulling double duty, love it! the flavor is not just hop driven, this is really well balanced by crispy classic pils malt, clean and classic water chemistry, and a lager yeast that is familiar and old worldy and expertly used here, but its the hops that makes this what it is to me, makes it stand out, herbal through most of it, bee balm and wheatgrass notes, then blooming into spring meadow and juicy lime, albeit subtle, at the end. snappy tidy bitterness on the swallow, rushing refreshing carbonation, gorgeous minerality and sparkle, and finally dry and just gone. really good beer, i could drink this every day, love the hop expression in here, makes an already great lager really special. bravo!

Concord Brewery "Rapscallion New England IPA"
16 fl. oz. can without production codes or freshness dating

Notes via stream of consciousness: The label notes that this is brewed with Citra, Mosaic, and El Dorado hops. I love that because it gives me an idea of what it's going to be like before I buy it. These are some of my favorite hops so that's great. It's poured a very hazy deep golden body beneath an inch of creamy white foam. I'm getting orange, peach, and berries in the nose, something a little bit like Fruity Pebbles breakfast cereal. The flavor follows the aroma with a wider range but basically the same fruits except for a touch of added grapefruit, melon, and gooseberry. There's a light touch of resin/pine to it as well, and it's firmly bitter with some resin lingering in the mostly dry finish. In the mouth it's medium bodied, crisp, and then smooth with all of the extra proteins in it. It also appears to me to have a nice oat-like flavor to the sweetish malt, and I'm guessing there's some wheat in there as well. As to the remainder, I could be wrong but I think it's pale ale malt, and the reason I say that is that the malt has some character to it whereas sometimes NEIPAs can be kind of bland on the malt side relying too heavily on the hops to carry the show. With that said, this is certainly not the hoppiest NEIPA that I've tasted but it has a great balance to it, and it's quite satisfying. For me, if I could get it all of the time it would be a great go-to beer. To finish up, the head held up well and left some very good lacing throughout the entire glass. Nicely done.

Can poured into a Mountain Rambler Brewery pint glass

A: Pours slightly hazy golden straw yellow with a frothy off white head that settles to a firm layer and laces nicely.

S: Zesty citrus, grassy, slightly dank herbal notes, resinous pine, slowly gives way to blueberry plus tropical and stone fruit, held together with biscuity malt and a little caramel sweetness.

T: Resinous pine, zesty citrus, pomelo, lemon, lime, and a hint of tangerine, tropical and stone fruit, pineapple, passion fruit, blueberry, mango, peach, and a faint hint of melon underlying slightly dank herbal notes, a bit grassy, biscuity malt, and a little caramel sweetness.

M: Medium body, moderate carbonation, quite smooth.

O: Fantastic Mosaic SMaSH IPA. Brings plenty of West Coast bitterness, but also tons of flavor. Just the right balance of assertive and smooth. Feel like I'm slightly under rating this one. Fortunately even after sharing a couple cans with a buddy I've still got some more in the fridge so I'll set aside some time soon to revisit and double check my work.
This was pretty much top of my list of beers to track down on my trip to Texas. To say I was stoked to find it fresh at H-E-B would be an understatement.

S: Big time ripe tropical and stone fruit, resinous pine, zesty citrus, faintly dank herbal notes, a touch floral, biscuity malt, and caramel sweetness.

T: Juicy tropical fruit, nectarine, mango, passion fruit, pineapple, strawberry, and a touch of guava, zesty citrus, lemon lime, candied grapefruit, and tangerine, resinous pine, underlying faintly dank herbal notes, floral hints, biscuity malt, and caramel sweetness.

M: Medium body, moderate carbonation, soft on the palate.

O: Snapped this one up on a visit to the Berkeley tap room not long after seeing Dune 2; couldn't resist, the timing was too perfect. Really nice hop combo, bringing plenty of juicy tropical fruit and citrus, but also plenty of resinous, piney, and herbal depth. Sits a touch sweeter than I'd prefer, but that's my only mild gripe.

fun hazy here, different than the crowd of them because of the use of the kveik yeast, which chews through just about anything and can be more or less expressive depending on temperature and other variables. they call it a norwegian ipa on account of its use, but im not sure that really is a thing, its just the origin of the yeast, this is still brewed and hopped like a modern american hazy, regardless of the ferment, which is actually quite restrained here, i think fitting of the style, just interesting enough without being deviant or confused. pale starchy looking golden color with a muted luster and not overly dense, high headed from the tap, good retention and consistent carbonation throughout. the nose and taste are citrus forward, sweet orange and its zest with some ripe melon and herbal bite behind that, nice balance from the grain, earthy and high quality pale malts in here, round and smooth and easy, holding the hop oils well, not heavying this at all, and slow fading at the end. there is some light spiciness from the yeast, peppery to me as it warms, but its restrained compared to its more common deployment in farmhouse type beers, perhaps run a bit cooler here, and i think that was a smart call, it adds interest without taking this over or making it too fermentation forward, and its compatible with this mix of hops, so well designed for sure. there is a juiciness to the hops that the yeast brings out, and even though citra leads this to me, the rest of the hops add a lot. bitterness is low but not absent, drinkability is high with this modest abv for the style, and it finishes dry. subtly clever beer here, nice for warmer weather, and one that should do well for them. the yeast is nice but well restrained, solid. good stuff coming from warfield of late.

First pint out the new barrel, after pulling through the sediment. A loose but lingering whitish head, on a dark bronze body. Malt, caramel and very slight hints of citrus on the nose. Tastes like the 70s, beautiful and beery, with hops that have a shadow of chocolate and a slightly lemony hint of dishwater. Not much of an aftertaste. A refreshing, classic bitter.

Taking the senses to the land down under, the brewmance between Mirror Twin and Burl Brew lands them in New Zealand and all those Nelson, Motueka, Pacifica, and Rakau hops.

Slaying it with a richly textured golden-orange pour, Liquid Swords kicks off with a frothy eggshell foam stance before drawing in the nose with a host of tangy, tropic, vinous, herbal and green fruit scents. As its initial taste of dry cereal, honeysuckle and agave seem to rise from the malts, a roundness of vanilla and cream come to mind.

But anything sweet is short live as the hops slice and dice through the thirst with a green character of kiwi, papaya, under ripened oranges and mangos, pineapple and passionfruit. Hints of lemon, white grape, lime and apple fuel the fruity flavors before the herbal bitterness of green tea, sassafras, verbena and hemp balance the fruity hop impressions and the lingering grain sweetness.

Medium bodied and drinking lighter than its imperial status suggests, the collaboration beer finishes with an even-keel bitter-sweet balance and carrying a malty-dry mouthfeel into a refreshing finish and herbal aftertaste.

You know that shitty light beer that we talk ourselves into liking when we're sitting by the beach in those tropical vacations. Well, Mirror Twin is taking the tastebuds on the same trip, only making the beer less shitty.

Brilliantly clear, very light- chrome even, La Coneja jumps right out with bubbly effervescence and a soft arid froth that sits atop. Light aromas of cereal and grain greet the nose along with a soft floral hop scent. Scantly sweet, the dry maltiness of the beer is cracker-thin and with hints of corn sweetness.

Much of that light and crisp flavor carries onto a carbonated "scrubbing" of the palate where the thirst is washed away and traded for a light carbonic bite. Fast fleeting sweetness is soon supplanted by mild apple and lemon esters and a fade to a pleasantly grassy hop bite to close.

Light, crisp and clean, the light Mexican lager is a premiere thirst quencher as it delivers exactly what's designed. Where underwhelming on flavor, that's not why we reach for these typed of beer. Its simply a thirst quencher with a hint of relaxing booze.

Short head, in both volume and longevity. Very thick hazy appearance, with an interesting dark yellow color tending toward beige. Luscious on the nose, with the promise of pineapple. The taste, at first, is insipid by comparison, but then a clean, refreshing fruitiness crops up. Fine, rich, svelte feel. Goes down right easy. Even though the flavor isn’t stellar, I’d buy this little hazy, dusky beauty again.

Picked up a 16 oz. can at Chip's Wine, Beer, and Cigars in Kill Devil Hills - Outer Banks of North Carolina. Poured into a Chimay goblet, this beer has a reddish clear copper color and a small bubbly white head that fades quickly. Small patches of spotty lacing on the glass. For the most part, this is a good American take on a Tripel. It features Belgian yeast, a fruity presence (In this case, black currants), some peppery spicing and a little sweetness (the fruit and maybe candi sugar). The only things that keep it from being world class are the fast-fading head, a touch more alcohol harshness than I am used to in a Tripel and the lack of a quality that I usually describe as "ripe cheese" in the flavor (something I find in only the best imported Tripels). Other than this nit-picking, I found this to be a solid brew, well worth trying.

Green Duck - Murder she oat. Keg. Inky black, thin. Brief tan head. Deeply roasty-toasty, major cocoa. Comes over as pungent but hence feels a bit thin in comparison.

Burwell - Stefan's Muehle - wheat beer.
Keg/white foam to lacing. Deep amber, very well hopped. Notably very like a trad bitter in the colour and hopping; the lingering drynes of trad hops.
I like it, how I like a good full-on trad Bitter, but it seems unadjacent to most wheat beers I'm accustomed to. 3.25/5

500 mL bottle from the LCBO; best before 07/08/2024 and served barely chilled.

Pours a clear copper-amber with ruby red highlights; situated atop is one finger of soapy, foamy, beige-coloured suds that dissolves within three minutes or so. A frothy collar is left encircling a sudsy cap, with a respectable swath of lace draped onto the glass after each sip. Very malt-forward aroma that reminds me of raisin bran or maybe bran muffins - very bready, with caramel, toffee, fig and maybe a little bit of banana bread.

This is a superb doppelbock, with each sip bringing new surprises to the fore. Bready malt flavours are dominant, supported by notes of caramel/toffee, bran muffin, raisin and mission fig; minor hints of cocoa, licorice and nuttiness develop on the back end. Malty aftertaste - more caramel, raisin and cocoa, with barely discernible alcohol warmth. Full-bodied, with gentle carbonation and a smooth, soft mouthfeel that totally works here. At just over 7%, it's way more drinkable than it should be.

Final Grade: I usually consider myself more of a hophead than a malt maniac, but doppelbocks are a major exception, and Andechs Doppelbock Dunkel is unequivocally one of the best I've ever had. Is it the second-best example in the world? I'm in no position to say otherwise. I don't know what it is about this style - I am usually repelled by brews that lean strongly to the sweet side of the spectrum, but the complex malt characteristics on display here are irresistible. This is a beer that I would recommend to all BAs, everywhere, but German beer lovers in particular should consider this a must-try.

Look: Poured a nice dark brown color with a long lasting and rocky looking head. Drinking out of their mug they sell in the gift shop, so no view after pouring, but looks very appetizing.
Smell: Smells similar to some stouts, porters, and other irish reds I have had before. Has that dark beer smell. Very nice. A tad of citrus as well.
Taste: Wow, this is nice. Very delicious. Easily the best dark beer I have ever had. Beats any stouts, porters, and irish reds I have had before. This is truly a good beer. I had my reservations that it may have been overhyped, but this is amazing.
Feel: Coats the mouth very nicely. Smooth. Sticks around amazingly.
Overall: This beer is great and I am sad that I will not be able to have it again for quite some time. Definitely an incentive to get down to Florida more often that's for sure. I got a 128 oz. growler, and I look forward to finishing it off. Easily one of the best beers I have ever had the pleasure of drinking. Easy drinking and delicious. Definitely buying and drinking again ASAP.

Pours an orange color, somewhat cloudy. Highly fruity, estery aroma. Flavor is more complex than I was expecting: not too bitter, a lot of fruit notes, sweet, but the sweetness balanced by a tart, citric sourness. It was sold as a single can here in Texas. It's a decently interesting beer, but I'd rather have a full 4- or 6-pack.

Clear Robust malty flavor with cereal and grainy bread. Inviting aroma with hay, dark greens, and a touch of lime. Aftertaste is quite bitter, but not undrinkable. It almost tastes like a Maibock but with a little more hoppiness. Seems stronger than the ABV would suggest. Overall this is a flavorful and smooth hoppy brew. Clear bright yellow brew with ample white foam in the goblet. Aromatic with straw and alfalfa and a hint of tangerine oil. Light and prickly mouthfeel is pleasing. Moderately hoppy but not overly bitter. Just a touch of malty taste with some bread. The hops hint at some green grapes and lime. Aftertaste is stems and a touch of minerals. There is nothing sweet or fruity about this, but it's an easy-going quaff. From the 16 oz can purchased at Elizabeth Station. Dated 05/01/24.

Deep, dark brown in color. Slight khaki head tapers off quickly, leaving a thin ring.
Nose is languid and smooth in its delivery of bitter roast, smoke, and a most understated fruit note.
Flavor follows with. a roasty coffee forward malt, some tobacco, sorghum, and muted brown bread.
Mouthfeel is thick enough to be very respectable for style.

I’m surprised this hasn’t been reviewed much yet. The smell is sweet and fruity, some pineapple and pine. The flavor hits initially with pineapple and tropical fruits and then finishes with pine resin and a slightly tart aftertaste. The mouthfeel, for me, is as the name states- juicy with a hint of stickiness. The pleasant amount of carbonation is like a little static on an old AM radio from my childhood (I like heavy carbonation). There is some noticeable bitterness in the finish from the hops, but it’s not overwhelming and I think it balances things out nicely. I used to hate IPA’s and then I grew to appreciate them and their complexity. This is a nice intro into IPA’s for people who may not care for Imperials and I believe that it is worth a try. The 9.5% ABV is not noticeable until you slam the second one and I can appreciate something that is refreshing without a heavy ethanol overtone. Be forewarned that it is sweet- if that’s not your thing then you may not care for this. However, it is a nice divergent from constant bitterness every once in a while. Devil’s Backbone rarely misses and I think that this offering is, once again, proof of the company’s range when it comes to diverse brews. I proudly give this a solid 4 out of 5.

16oz can purchased from the fridge as a single for $3.99. Canned on 01/29/2024, so this beer is almost four months old.

Look: Moderately hazy, it's still translucent. Nice peachy orange color. There was a finger of thick off-white head that reduced to a thin layer clinging to the rim of the glass.

Smell: Nice aromas of peach, mango, some pineapple. It's interesting that there's like a diesel-like note underneath it all that is pretty prevalent. Green bell pepper on the finish, especially after swirling.

Taste: Nice balance of sweet, fruit, and bitterness. Up front, it's sweet and fruity with notes of peach, mango, orange, pineapple. The beer gains bitterness as it passes through the palate; the finish is moderately bitter - rindy and pithy, it's very soft and pleasant.

Feel: It's medium bodied. I'm actually a bit surprised how smooth and "light" this 8% Double IPA drinks. The NEIPAs have a tendency to be thick and chalky; this one is not like that.

Overall: It's highly drinkable, very smooth, and tasty. Personally, I would still prefer an Imperial West Coast-style IPA over and Imperial NEIPA like this one. To me, the beer is good overall; it's just a bit boring. That being said, this is a pretty good one and it's still showing pretty well after being canned almost four months ago.

Dark tannish brown, cloudy, mild head and lacing. Malty, smoky, boozy, and mossy scents. Taste is tart dark fruit and bittersweet butterscotch, caramel and vanilla flavors, wooden boozy barrel back burn. Medium bodied, dry finish, mildly assertive alcohol presence. Canned 3/9/22. “Joyous asbess” stamped on the side of the can

Here’s the only other big beer I got from my Hermit Thrush haul, which is a damn shame because I had Rowdy Monk last week, their massive sour Quad, and it was my favorite beer from them by far. This one sounds like it’ll be fun in the same kind of way, as you don’t really see sour Barleywines much. Let’s crack it open and find out what it’s all about

Pours a cloudy deep brown with a finger of soapy light beige head that quickly fades to a thin ring and leaves no lacing

Well there isn’t much suggestion of Barleywine in the nose so that’s rather disappointing, but I still like it for what it is. I’m picking up on aromas of black cherry, red wine vinegar, brown sugar, sharp oak, lemon zest, raisin, and light leather

There’s more of a sweet maltiness present in taste, but not all that much. On the front end of the sip I’m tasting cherry pit, molasses, brown sugar, red wine vinegar, sharp oak, light caramel, lemon zest, and wet hay. The swallow brings notes of black cherry, brown siagr, creme brûlée, vanilla bean, smooth oak, red wine vinegar, raisin, wet hay, leather, and light tobacco

A medium body pairs with gentle tingling carbonation, resulting in a smooth beer. Finishes a tad sticky but dries out quickly and drinks below its abv

I’m a bit conflicted because this one is pretty good, but as many others have pointed out it’s hardly a Barleywine. Oh well

Dark Golden color with a nice creamy head. Good aroma of banana and cloves. Taste of phenols and pepper is stronger than I like, but very Belgian. Feel is smooth but the high ABV is hot. I got one of the 500 limited release wax capped bottles. It would be interesting to see how that taste smoothes out with age; this is very fresh. Maybe I should pick up another $20 750ml bottle? A chilled sixteen ounce can of Barrier Rembrandt (American) Porter 6.1% was cracked in late May, 2024, then poured into a simple glass. The beer looks fine, a very dark body topped by a light brown foam. The head wasn't especially dense, but did leave some lacing. The taste is interesting. It has a modest body with primary flavors of roasted malt and hop flavors. There's just a touch of hop bitterness to accent the roasted malt in the pleasant aftertaste. This is a good one. I might have liked more heft in the body, given the 6.1% alcohol, but only a quibble. Beer was provided by my son's old friend Dave.
