    Product Description

The new JVC HA-NC250 combines outstanding sound quality with advanced noise-canceling and isolation technologies to provide a superior listening experience. The HA-NC250's noise cancellation circuitry includes feedback technology that constantly monitors the noise cancellation process. As a result, the headphones eliminate up to 85 percent of extraneous background noise. To further block noise, the HA-NC250 offers two JVC innovations that help isolate the listener from outside sounds. First, each earpiece employs a double housing structure for an extra sound insulation layer. Second, JVC developed a new technique for attaching the headphone's smooth memory foam cushioned ear pads to the housing that helps isolate background noise. The smooth pads also enhance comfort. These sound isolation features, for which patents have been applied, are especially important since the HA-NC250 can be used with the active noise cancellation switched off. For the best possible sound quality, the new headphone uses a 40mm neodymium driver in each earpiece. For comfort and portability, the HA-NC250 is one of the lightest headphones in its class, weighing just 5.3 ounces. It folds flat, and when folded is slimmer than most competing models. Included with the HA-NC250 are a slim carrying case, a four-foot detachable cord, airline dual plug adapter, and ¼-inch plug adapter for use with many home audio and video components. The headphones use a single 1.5-volt AAA battery for powering the noise cancellation circuitry. Battery life is rated at about 50 hours.

Great Sound, Great Value, Crappy Build Quality (the Plastic and the Earcups)
    3 Stars
Great Sound, Great Value, Crappy Build Quality (the Plastic and the Earcups)
GREAT SOUND, GREAT VALUE, EXCELLENT PERFORMANCE, But LATELY THE BUILD QUALITY HAS SUFFERED.I have owned four pairs of these headphones, and I love them. They are an excellent value for the money, the sound quality is excellent with deep bass and crisp treble — however, there is an issue that has popped up recently with my newer JVC headphones. The JVCs of this model that I bought three years ago are still in perfect working order and still as snazzy as the day I bought them. The last two I bought (I keep one at the office and one at home in the den) have the same sound quality as the originals but, after owning them for almost a year, it has been evident that JVC is cutting corners on the build quality.1. The point where the metal band comes into contact with the plastic sleeve portion of the headphones is weak and prone to snap if the metal band is opened too wide when you put them on your head. This is because they are secured with a locking/snapping mechanism that pops out too easily when there is pressure applied.2. The coating on the earcups flake/rub off even with only normal use that doesn't fall outside of normal wear and tear.3. The coating on the headband rubs off even with only normal use that doesn't fall outside of normal wear and tear.Despite these aesthetic shortcomings, the headphones still work well. So just have your eyes open about what will happen after the first year of use — if you buy these headphones..UPDATE: 04.05.2019One of two of these headphones finally bit the dust for good. The sad thing is that the headphones themselves STILL work wonderfully, it's just the materials that gave way. The plastic finally became brittle enough that they snapped when I put them on my head. I've tried a lot of headsets and headphones over the years and I can honestly say the JVC HANC250 are the best. Now I know there are more accurate headphones out there and ones with better noise canceling, or are more comfortable, or have more flashy features, but no other single headphone represents the best mix of features like these do.

I bought my first JVC HANC250 back in 2009 and I was immediately surprised at the difference in sound quality they represented. I had tried Bose and Sennheiser headphones before this, but none of those other "high end" headphones showed this level of improvement to sound quality. (Bose QC3 and even the new QC15 were particularly disappointing. Sorry Bose fans...) It's like the first time you hear studio monitors. The difference is undeniable even for the "non-audiophile." And let me take a moment to state that I am not an audiophile. My hearing is decent, but I work with and know many people that have hearing above my own.

I can best describe the audio quality as reference levels. The EQ curve is very flat. No crazy heavy bass or piercing highs. It's like a good set of studio monitors. All frequencies are well represented, but no frequency is obviously louder then the others. I call them my reference headphones and it bugs the hell out of my audiophile friends. For what ever reason they assume that any headphone under a grand are trash. I can't hear much of a difference in their studio headphones over these, so I think I will stick with the $100 headphones...

The headphones will work unpowered (which is great in a pinch) but the audio quality is severely diminished. It sounds about like a cheap pair of headphones that came for free with your Sony Walkman in 1992. Bad.

The noise canceling feature works well. I use it to block noise on planes and in a crowded office space. It's not like you can't hear anything outside the headset though. Everything is just much harder to hear. People's voices sound as if they are in the other room even though they are standing next to you. It's pleasantly peaceful. Like a college library.

Battery life is amazing. They say 50 hours and they mean it. When the battery starts to die, the noise cancelling will kickoff when very loud sounds happen around you. Then loud things you are listening to will temporarily stop the powered parts of the headphones. The first time it happened I had forgotten that the headphone was powered (despite turning it "on" every time I used them) and I thought the headphones had started to break. This was after two weeks of solid use. The battery life is outstanding.

The earphones are lightweight, but not flimsy-feeling like the Bose headphones. The earpads are soft, comfortable, don't make your face leak, and after a short time, are completely forgotten on your head. (I wear glasses!) After 3.5 years of use I JUST this weekend (12.29.2012) wore out the earpads. Replacements can be bought from JVC.com using part number "J34899-001" and cost $14 each. Worth it.

The audio cable is the low point for these headphones. The cable isn't extremely short or anything, but every once in a while you will feel like you could use just one more foot of cable. Luckily the audio cable isn't hardwired into the headphones and you can replace it with a 3.5mm cable. Unfortunately not ANY 3.5mm cable will do. The plug for the cable on the headphones is like an older iPhone, that is to say, it's recessed into the plastic. So the best replacements are iPhone headphone cables. (sometimes called "slim" 3.5mm) It's really hard to find them in black though...

I've bought 2 pairs personally and I had the studio that I work for buy me a pair. I used all three pairs nearly non-stop for a combined use-time of about 7 years. None of them have ever broken beyond repair. JVC has made something special here folks. Whenever someone asks me about a good set of headphones I don't even think about it. The JVC HANC250 are the best pair of headphones. Period.

I had very high hope for these JVC headphones. I had read many good things, and the size was about the right size: on the ear, but large enough to produce good bass, especially since, according to what I read in the technical details at Amazon, the drivers are 40 mm. Just about everything that I read about these headphones is incorrect, including the comments from other users. They are a decidedly cheap pair of phones effectively masquerading as something that they are not.

    - The claim is that the drivers are 40 mm. In fact, the drivers are approximately 32 mm, i.e., about 1.3 inches. You have to pop off the ear pad to install the battery, and as soon as you do that, you can easily see the driver. It is a familiar driver that has been in common use in various brands of cheap headphones for decades. The diaphragm is clear plastic, most likely mylar, with semi-spiral pleats to accommodate the diaphragm motion. This driver is not large enough to produce appreciable bass in the lower octaves. And a driver that cannot produce strong bass in the lower octaves cannot possibly be effective at noise cancellation in the lower octaves.

    - Aside from the inability to cancel noise in the lower octaves, owing to the use of a driver that just isn't large enough, the sound cancellation does not work well at all. I turned on my stereo and let it play through the speakers, and put the headphones on, and switched the noise cancellation on and off. There is no question that there was a difference, but it was only a slight difference, and nowhere near the same as the difference that I have observed in other noise-canceling headphones, including a really cheap pair by Panasonic that I owned several years back. I would rate the noise canceling ability of these headphones as just barely effective at all, and not up to the standard of any good noise canceling headphones.

    - JVC makes the claim that these headphones are excellent from the standpoint of passive sound isolation. They brag about a new, patented method for attaching the pads to the headphone, and how this is supposed to improve sound isolation. I struggled to understand what could be better than glue. In fact, if they were awarded a patent, it was for reasons having nothing to do with passive sound isolation. The pad incorporates a stiff plastic plate in the back, that snaps to the headphone via four small clips. When you pull the pad off to install the battery, and then snap the pad back in place, it is apparent that the seal between the back of the pad and the headphone is not a good seal at all. I would estimate that the gap that runs most of the way around is at least 1 mm.

    - As with other headphones that I have seen over the years that use the same driver, the sound quality is okay, but nothing special. The first time I saw this driver was on a pair of Koss phones back in the early `80s. Back then it sounded pretty good, but that was in comparison to the common headphones of that era, which typically did not sound particularly good. If you are accustomed to any of the better-sounding headphones that are available nowadays, you probably will not like the sound of these headphones. They are obviously weak in the bass, and there are obvious peaks in the response higher in frequency. Singing voices with which I am very familiar did not sound at all familiar when heard through these headphones, either with the noise canceling on or off. Musical instruments also did not sound natural. I am reasonably certain that this driver is the exact same driver that is used in many other headphones that sell for less than $25.

    - The pads are covered with soft vinyl, and do not breathe, and the foam under the pad is memory foam, which although technically is an open-cell foam, does not breathe for intents and purposes. Many inexpensive headphones use a thin cover of soft open-cell foam, and with covers of that variety, I can wear the headphones for an hour or more, even when working out in the gym. I hadn't been wearing these headphones for more than about five minutes before I started to experience discomfort due to the non-breathable vinyl directly against my skin.

    - The pads are not comfortable, and there is nothing comfortable about the headphone. Memory foam notwithstanding, the pads just did not conform to the outer contour of my ear. This led to discomfort, with the bulk of the force concentrated in a few spots, and it also prevented a good seal between the pad and my ear. The lack of a good seal was made worse due to the lack of sufficient force. I felt as if the headphones were just barely resting on my ears, and with only slight head movements, I could easily sense that they were not staying in place. I am certain that if I tried to use them in the gym on the treadmill I would constantly be fidgeting with them. Furthermore, the friction in the upper pivot (the pivot that allows the headphones to fold flat) was so excessive as to prevent the headphones from naturally come to a uniform rest on my ears. You have to try to adjust it manually, but it just isn't the same as when the headphones pivot as they come to rest on your ear.

All in all, I would judge the value of these headphones at perhaps $40. If I were looking for a pair of cheap noise-canceling headphones at around that price, then I would consider these phones. But that isn't what I was looking for, and they aren't represented as being that. They are represented as being $100 phones of reasonably good quality. They are not that, not even close. I'm sending them back to Amazon right away, with considerable disappointment, because I still cannot find a good, affordable pair of noise-canceling headphones that do not suffer multiple problems that are obvious and that I find intolerable.

The best headphones I could find that had active noise cancelling, and would still work without it on. Other benefits are that it takes a regular AAA battery, so that when they do die and you still need noise cancelling, you can swap it out for a new battery with no charging downtime. The cable is detachable, which removes the most likely point of failure! If the cable dies, you can swap it out for a $10 replacement instead of having to buy a whole new set of cans. I bought a  5' 3.5mm audio cable  that has android call/volume controls which makes the whole set perfect! If the cable wasn't detachable none of this would be possible, and you might be charged an extra $30 for the upgrade in features.
Sound: No major complaints. A bit pitchy but has good bass. Turning noise cancelling on boosts music vocals and increases the overall volume. Not deal breakers as you can still use these without noise cancelling, and it does help cut through background noise.
Fit: Tires out my ears after a few hours. As they are on-ear, most of the compression force is on the ear itself, but that is how they work.
Durability: The hard carrying case sure helps! After 3 years the (faux?) leather is starting to flake off the pads.

    I would definitely recommend.

I have been able to test them on two flights and I am very impressed. They do not entirely cut out the aircraft engine noise, but for the price, they do a very good job of reducing it sufficiently for you to hear the music. They are light and comfortable and are also good if you just want to wear them to reduce the aircraft noise. They also work well with noise cancelling switched off.

The case is also very good and holds the headphones, my ipod and spare batteries. Battery life is also very good - you just have to remember to switch off the noise cancelling before putting them away, otherwise when you come to use them again, you may find that you need a new battery. The red light near the on/off switch is a clue!

I have been using JVC HA-NC250 Noise Cancelling Headphones for almost 6 months now and trust me they are very comfortable and good sound quality headphones, including tight bass response. It covers my ears completely and cancels almost 90% of outside noise. They can also use with or without Noise cancelling feature unlike Bose headphones.
Sound quality of Bose QC15 is quite clear however JVC HA-NC 250 have better base and far more affordable than it. Hard Case protects them from damage and extends its life during travel. Addition of microphone for phone conversation would make it one of best headphones in the market.
Overall the JVC HA-NC250 Noise Canceling Headphones make a great travel companion for those who demand quality sound. It offers decent sound quality with affordable price.

Update: This is year 2023 and many wireless headphones are out there. But these headphones are still working fine with no issues .
