I was familiar with most of the stretches demonstrated in this book; however, there are also many variations, some I could do and others were beyond my stretching ability. This is a slick book with all the photographs in color. The instructions are simple to follow and the photos are clear and large enough to see how the exercises are done.
This wonderful text covers the following material: The first part focuses on Pilates defined: Principles and aims of Pilates, how it works and performing the exercises. The second part (Pilates and your body) explains the spine, movement of the lumbar spine, the musculoskeletal system, looking after your spine and spinal stability. The final part (Pilates-based programed for the spine) and includes preparation, how to use this book, getting started, fundamentals, developing strength, creating flexibility and other exercises.
Whether you are into Pilates exercises or not, if you are seeking exercises to ease back pain you should check out this book. I found it to be a very informative book.

Pilates is NOT stretching only. The key concept of Joe Pilates' work was that all movement is generated from the core. So EVERY exercise builds adbominal strength which is essential for anyone with back issues.
Secondly, Pilates builds strength and flexibility simultaneously. Relaxed, flexible muscles are less likely to put stress on the skeletal system. This is the reason I personally found Pilates and after 3 months of doing Pilates 3x per week eliminated my own neck and shoulder pain which simple stretching had not helped.
The book is easy to follow and the photos are first rate. I highly recommend this book to anyone.
