It was my birthday and I had to have lunch by myself during my work day. I have no problem eating alone, even on my birthday.
I sat at the bar and got a nice full view of the chef. They have these little menu slips that you check off what you want to order. I checked off the Koji Special of a roll with Eel with Avocado and Crab meat.
I also specified when she took my plate that I wanted 2 pieced of Maguro (Tuna)
She took the menu back to the chef and told him I only wanted 2 pieces of Maguro. He saw my little check mark next to the Roll I wanted and asked her if I wanted just Maguro or if I wanted both. She insisted only Maguro
I saw this whole exchange right in front of me. They were not speaking English but I knew exactly what was being said. The chef made her come back and double check. She got it right the second time.
My Maguro was served first. Really fishy. I recently had the most immaculate piece of tuna at a different sushi place and I'm honestly trying to relive that moment and have yet to find it. This fish didn't live up to my expectations.
As my Roll rolled around over to my table I noticed a little sign on the counter that said something along the lines of, Please forgive them for being slow because they were extremely short handed.
I guess that kind of excuses the almost mistake that happened with my food. Thank goodness the chef was on his game.
My roll was yummy and worth coming back for. This place is up the street from my office and right next door to one of my favorite cupcake shops. If you're craving the fresh fish, try this place out.Helpful 7Thanks 0Love this 7Oh no 0 - Aug 31, 2013
Came here twice during my stay in the Bay Area. My mother's friend is a regular here so she recommended Koji's to us. It's run by Japanese people so you're getting authentic Japanese mom & pop food when dining here. Conveniently located in a mall, there is a lot of parking spots available. The menu is extensive and has something for every pallet. Service on both occasions was excellent - friendly and attentive. I noticed a review suggesting that this place is expensive; however, I would have to respectively disagree as I found pricing to be quite reasonable here. I will definitely come back should I be in the Bay Area again.
Good for: lunch, dinner, drinks
PS / They have an all you can drink sake special.Helpful 2Thanks 0Love this 1Oh no 0 - Mar 1, 2014Updated review
We still like coming here for lunch. The fried chicken appetizer is still one of the best - chicken karaage with the soy-ginger marinade and panko coating is just amazing. Their dill sauce also pairs well.
The sushi is also top notch - melt-in-your mouth and the nigiri is pretty good.
The ramen however is declining in terms of value. A $9 bowl of ramen yields very little noodles. They have a $12 version with additional pork, but it's simply not worth it.
There's better ramen elsewhere, but Koji is still pretty good for sushi and karaage.Helpful 0Thanks 0Love this 1Oh no 0Nov 23, 2013Previous reviewWe've frequented Koji's a few more times and our most recent visit was for lunch. Their ramen dishes are consistently good as is their nigiri sushi combos. This time I wanted to try their Fried Chicken lunch combo.
The combo came with the standard miso soup and salad. A bowl of rice and plate of six or so boneless fried chicken pieces. Garnishes include a small dollop of potato salad and some edamame. The chicken was simply amazing - lightly fried in some seasoned bread cribs, with the meat extremely juicy and hot. It didn't feel nor taste oily at all - the Japanese version of fried chicken is quite special. The lunch combo was under $10 which is a steal given the quality!Oct 30, 2013Previous reviewA great Japanese restaurant offering wonderful sushi and other specialties like ramen and combo plates. It was nice to see black cod and homemade banana ice cream on the menu as well!
We had the homemade pot stickers for appetizer - nice soft skin and well seasoned pork fillings. I ordered their nigiri combo, which had ten pieces of perfectly made sushi. Fish toppings were melt-in-your mouth while the rice was loosely packed and well seasoned with vinegar - which are my two most critical criteria for great sushi. The green salad and miso soup that came with the meal was nothing special though.
Wife ordered spicy miso ramen, which had a broth with a real nice kick. Spicy bit not overpowering. Ramen noodles were firm and slightly chewy, which is great. Pork slices were tender and tasty. She also ordered a side order of unagi and those were executed well too!
Would definitely come back to try their other ramen varieties and their black cod! - Dec 31, 2009
In suburbia, you can find almost any chain restaurant you can think of, but if you look hard enough, you can find a jewel. A jewel of a small family owned restaurant that has a unique taste and flavor.
Koji's is just that place. While the fish is very fresh, it may not have been the BEST quality fish for fat content and taste. However, that's comparing it to such places as Sushi Ota in San Diego and a few places overseas in Asia. But that's just it, Koji's is good enough to compare to these places. With the Chirashi Special bowl in front of me, my eyes lit up with excitement knowing that they were serving a large bowl with Uni! The only thing that COULD have made it better was Ebi.
Another party member ordered the Kobe Beef Style Sukiyaki. With a strong and distinct taste, it made me almost have food envy. The other four people in our party all ordered bento boxes which also proved to be a great deal for the money and quality/quantity of food you receive.
With high food quality, good portions, and a reasonable cost, there is little more to be said about how great the food is. So why the 4 star? Well, it would be a 4.5 in my opinion because as I had said before, I'm comparing it to some of the sushi giants in my mind. The only reason I would dock it to 4 is our order of the volcano roll (SPICY!!!) was forgotten.
Would I go back here again? In one word / puncutation: YES! The fish melted in my mouth, the uni was creamy and deliciuos, and everyone had a great time. Decently priced for the neighborhood, Koji's is definitely on my NorCal Sushi list.Helpful 7Thanks 0Love this 6Oh no 0 - Apr 16, 2009
Seriously???? 4 words for you (kind of, if you count hyphens):
7 bucks all-you-can-drink sake
Didn't have it, of course, b/c there is no circumstance where I should have unlimited hot sake, however I appreciate the economical offer.
So I've been to Kojis something like 4 or 5 times. First couple of times I was extremely disappointed, but mostly b/c I was a once-a-week regular at Oh Sushi (the great sushi place that preceded it) and this place was different. When it first opened, it was super traditional and all I wanted was Oh Sushi again. Then based on the Yelps and the fact that we tried pretty much every sushi restaurant in Danville and San Ramon with nothing jumping out as "awesome", we came back here. And I think I can finally say, I think we found our 2-4 times a month place.
Kojis has changed a lot! While my experience here has been somewhat of a rocky start, things were so different for me this time around. They have added different rolls including bringing back some of my favorites from Oh Sushi. Thank you Patron Saint of Lemon for resurecting the 49er roll (ca roll with salmon and a thin slice of lemon on top) back from its death occuring when Oh Sushi closed its doors. Thank you Patron Saint of Mango Sauce for rising the Diablo roll from it's firey death --(granted the spicy tuny has been substituted with tempura and crab, they'll swap that for the right stuff no problem).
We sat at the sushi bar and wow was the service good. They couldn't be nicer or more attentive (for example, I think I got fresh tea 4 times). The sushi chef even gave us this free dish which he said was very traditional--yes yes I get it, we likey the commercial sushi a bit too much. The dish was good; bean curd with some sort of fish in this little box. Not exactly my thing, but I do like someone trying to expand my horizons.
So to sum this up, the sushi was fresh and flavorful, the new rolls are interesting and resurrect some of my favorites, and the service is freakin fantastic. We'll be back and probably in my capacity as a once-a-weeker-restaurant seeker capacity!Helpful 3Thanks 0Love this 6Oh no 0 - Darshan R.La Mirada, CA223138596Oct 26, 2009
Decent for the price.
We got takeout one night with a couple orders of Miso Soup and Shrimp Tempura Rolls. The bill came out to around $15, which is awesome. The only thing was that the rolls didn't seem to be formed properly and they skimped us on the rice, they fell apart as we picked them up.
Maybe it was because we ordered it to go? Was it too close to closing time? Not sure, but for the price it was all right in my book.Helpful 3Thanks 0Love this 5Oh no 0 - Aug 21, 2010
Kojis is where a thai eatery once was (years ago). place is small but space is nicely utilized. the sushi bar is in the center of the room. the open kitchen is straight ahead. and tables are spaced thro the eatery.

We came here for a birthday celebration and was immediately greeted with an authentic Japanese greeting. Seated along the 'wall of fame' where you will see popular sports legends such as Kristi Yamaguchi, Chris Mullen and the most popular female Japanese golfer prominently displayed on the wall.
We started with a platter of traditional Japanese appetizers, the kind you have during a New Year season. Several in our group opted for the Chirashi special while others had Udon and Don Buri. The salad and miso soup came quickly and was very good, especially the light, yet flavorful dressing.
Completely satisfied by the fresh array of fish in my Chirashi bowl, tuna, Saba, Halibut, Snapper, Scallops and sushi rice. This really hit the spot and not too heavy for lunch.
The Udon and Buri both looked hearty and tasteful as the bowls were clean as they promptly cleared our table.
We noticed Kubota Sake 'on sale' for $15/carafe so we were able squeeze 5 glasses which is a bargain for this higher end Sake which normally sells only through distributors for $70 a bottle. Wished we noticed the sign earlier in our meal. Perhaps next time they will host a Sake tasting session and take names to notify in advance (hint, hint).
All in all the service was excellent at Koji's and the ambience is far more authentic than other Sushi places owned by other Asian ancestries.
Parking is plentiful and location is very convenient to downtown Danville.
Closed for lunch on Sunday and all day Monday.Helpful 3Thanks 0Love this 1Oh no 0 - Jun 4, 2012
Generous portions, fresh fish, and authentic food. Much better than its strip mall exterior would have you think.
-Deep fried lotus root: Crispy, savory, and unique
-Agedashi tofu: Presented in a way I've never seen before on a sushi roll dish, with each individual square of tofu arranged in a line. The sauce is a little bland, but they taste good with ponzu.
-Sashimi dinner: 15 pieces of chef's choice--and none of that ebi nonsense. Solid pieces of maguro, salmon, hamachi, etc. The salmon and yellowtail, in particular, were melt-in-your-mouth fresh.
-Combo dinners: Generous portions that can combine nigiri, tempura, teriyakis, etc. Come with CA roll, rice, potato salad, and a little fruit cocktail. Seem like a good bang for your buck.
And best of all, $8 all you can drink sake! I'm sold :)Helpful 2Thanks 0Love this 3Oh no 0 - Jul 27, 2009
The food was good overall. The sushi was made fresh and quick. The staff are nice. They will even make you the sushi you want even if it's not on the menu. The prices are decent and the food is better compared to other Japanese restaurants in the area. I would recommend this place for anyone who wants sushi at a reasonable price.
