This year I decided to get a pretty drastic haircut. My hair has never fallen above my chest. So when I decided that I wanted my hair cut short, I knew I had to go to someone who would do the job WELL.
This is where Shaun comes in.
First of all, I got totally lost since I'm new to the city. I ran to the salon huffing and puffing and the first thing he said to me was, "Never run here again!" I apologized for being late, but he handled it like it was no big deal :)
So we were off to a great start. He then asked if I was sure about getting such a big change. I told him I wanted to donate my hair so he carefully tied it up, cut these piece off, and gave them to me to send to Locks of Love.
Shaun did such a fantastic job. He gave me an AMAZING bob and he was so nice. I don't have to do anything to style it. Just wash and go.
All in all, I paid $180 for a $150 haircut. COMPLETELY worth it. Thanks so much for making my first "extreme" cut a wonderful experience for me :)
I walked away with:
1) a lot more self-confidence
2) a very stylish yet low-maintenance cut
3) styling tips (should I decide to style it)
4) hair product recommendations for my specific hair type
5) good conversation about life on the West coast, and
6) an invitation to feel free to call or come in if I'm not happy w/ the cut or should anything happen to go awry

Okay, found Seagulls on Yelp! Thank ya kindly fellow New Yorkers, this is a great place.
I had seriously long hair for years, but was ready for a change. Living here only one year I have had my hair trimmed up a few times, but was not really picky about who did it. (How can you mess up a trim, right?)
So, wanting a serious change, I wanted someone who knew their business. KIM did an amazing job. I called to make an appointment and was able to get in the same day. She did exactly what I wanted and talked me through the cut. I was SERIOUSLY IMPRESSED with her skills with the straight razor. I feel like Victoria Beckham - without the uber long sexy legs.
Hello Sassy~
If you are looking for a cutting edge cut, these people know there stuff. Not for the faint of heart. Trendy & Modern.
I didn't cry to see my boring, long hair being swept away.~Helpful 5Thanks 0Love this 0Oh no 0 - C C.Manhattan, NY632Apr 10, 2015
More than a year ago, I called Seagull to ask who was good with men's hair, and I got referred to Kristen. I used to live in DC, and I had a hard time convincing hair stylists to do what I wanted (very tight fade on the sides and back, long on the top), but Kristen understood exactly what I was asking for, and it looked great.
The evidence is when I come out with my freshly cut hair, and everyone I encounter compliments me on how great it looks. I'm a total fan. I deal with the prices by only going here for every other haircut, but it's something I look forward to.Helpful 2Thanks 0Love this 1Oh no 0 - Em K.Queens, NY6417750Sep 9, 2015
Very nice experience. Got some free time and called up to see if they have avail for last min. Lucky me! Hopped in for 3.30 pm appointment with Shawn.
The salon is cute and tiny and really friendly atmosphere.
So back to my hair. I got damaged short Asian with some color on it. I am looking to get pink, rose gold ombré highlight on my hair. Not like extreme but just a little peek here and there. Shawn told me that we might not get to the color that I wanted due to nature of my hair (very dark)but we def get to pink or magenta which is cool with me - I like the truth more than impossible promise tbh. he asked me a lot of questions along the process and suggested we do some some in the front too which turn out the way I really like it and make it looks much nicer.
It was an overall nice experience. We talk a lot of about Caitlyn and Miley and documentaries ; he's a total sweetheart and very nice to chat with during treatment as well as not try to be pushy about product or extra stuffs on you (I know some people hates that)
The total comes out to 280$ with total time of 3hrs but I didn't blow dry my hair cos I gotta go to workout right after so why bother so you might need at least 3 or more of you looking to get highlight done.
Def recommend if you looking to get any creative hair color highlight and ombré and pastel;)Helpful 1Thanks 0Love this 0Oh no 0 - Maria D.Denver, CO29111172Jun 7, 2008
I paid way too much for this haircut; almost to the point of embarrassment but I feel about it the way I feel about my glasses: I always have them on, why not spend more, right?
Anyway, it was worth it since Kim, who is the newest stylist here, gave me a really cute haircut and actually listened to me when I told her that I wanted fun, un-conservative, un-square hair. I've gotten a few cuts where people do not listen to me because I don't dress all hipster and assume that I want boring hair. I don't. I like bedhead, razor cuts, and curls of insanity. Kim gave me exactly that. She also gave me a cut that is VERY low maintenance, did not push products on me and didn't give me any weird guilt trips about my clearly overgrown jacked hair.
The salon is small and very cute and not at all overly modern. It reminds me a bit of Glam-O-Rama in San Francisco. It's not the kind of place where they offer you champagne or whatever when you come in but the people working were very, very nice, so nice that I was taken aback as I am used to just a little bit of attitude when I go to trendy hair places and this was totally not the case here.
I've always made fun of those people who travelled to other states to get their hair done but I fear after such a positive experience here, I may have to turn into one of those assholes. It's definitely a treat, and I'll have to skip a few nights of karaoke to afford it, but like my girl Cybill Shepherd says: I'm worth it!Helpful 16Thanks 0Love this 10Oh no 0 - Audrey J.San Francisco, CA60062578Sep 15, 2008Updated review
Okay, guys....I know it's been a month and a half since I got my haircut, but with long hair, it should still look good after 6 weeks, right?
Uhh...for the past 2 weeks, I've been sporting a $120 mullet.
That's not cool.
I used to cut my own hair, and, to be honest, the long term results were better than this.
Time to sharpen my scissors...Helpful 10Thanks 0Love this 9Oh no 0Jul 28, 2008Previous reviewWhile I would typically say that one visit does not a review make, when said visit leaves my wallet $120+ lighter, I feel I have the basis for the formation of an opinion.
I thought my haircut was...fine. And that's great -- if all I was looking for were "fine."
With the raves, reviews, and five-star average, however, I kind of expected to walk out of that place shitting rainbows and skittles while the floor turned to glitter and light-up "Billie Jean"-style sidewalk squares.
And...I didn't.
My hairstylist was very knowledgeable and even gave me hair-homework (wherein she suggested products for me, for which I'm actually VERY grateful because I had not the slightest clue how to deal with my super-sensitive skin/scalp + fine hair combo), and the haircut was "fine," but still....
I love the location and its convenience, and the place is very cute and hip. However, I got the feeling upon walking in that I was majorly out of place...in that I was not "hip" enough to be there. And while I AM admittedly corporate, a buck is a buck is a buck, right? AND it's not like I was wearing my business casual or anything. So I shouldn't have felt out of place when they were all being chatty around me?
I guess this is where people say "your expectations were too high." And they very well may have been, but if I'm spending more than $100 on a haircut, I would probably...go back to Rachel at Ted Gibson. Or I could just go back to Cheetah Top (http://www.yelp.com/biz/vanilla-hair-spa-new-york#hrid:XouiVh4mNlQYdCmgAlYldg) and have enough left over for a new pedi. :)

Let me start off by saying that I hate, hate hate getting my haircut. It stresses me out so I usually play it safe and wait until it has to be cut for me to make an appointment. But after seeing Seagull consistently on the home page and reading all of the five-star reviews, I decided to take the plunge and make an appointment with Shaun.
I walked in the salon and the combination of great reviews and Shaun's "we've known each other forever" demeanor allowed me to feel mellow and trusting. I gave a description of what I wanted, asked him for his feedback and then gave him permission to do what he felt would look good on me.
The result? I got a style that accomplished the feeling I described (sexy, not boring, not "perfect") which looked really good on me. Well, what I actually said when I saw the final result was that it's "ridiculously gorgeous."
I'm pretty happy that I wasn't stressed out, that Shaun was really nice, and that I got a really awesome haircut and a stylist that I plan on seeing more than twice a year. Yay Shaun and yay Seagull!Helpful 10Thanks 0Love this 3Oh no 0 - Cassandra O.Oakland, CA4453Aug 15, 2007
I admit-- I made a mistake by getting my hair cut in chinatown. They are usually pretty good! But this time they f'd up. Bad. My bangs were an embarassment.
So, after wandering around for a few hours, wondering if i really was going to get 2 haircuts in one day, i chanced upon Seagulls. Not very busy at all, Kate said she could fit me in for a touch up before her next appointment. I explained my horrendous cut and not so articulately explained that i just wanted it to "not look like this. better. please. help."
8 minutes later and my hair has movement! it has texture! I am stylish! Wow!
I'm going back.Helpful 6Thanks 0Love this 12Oh no 0 - Eric P.Essex County, NJ39326631Jul 14, 2008
I walked in.
"How much is a men's haircut?"
"$85"
I walked out.
Granted, I never sat down to have anything done, I have heard some great things about this place. This is why girl needs a sugar daddy.
The girl at the counter seemed to be very understanding of the "financially impaired" and gladly recommended a barber shop down the street. Probably another victim of NYC-business-rent syndrome.Helpful 4Thanks 0Love this 10Oh no 0 - Erin T.New York, NY410Jan 29, 2008
I've been seeing the same hairdresser in San Francisco since I was about seven years old. He cuts my hair, my mom's hair, three of my aunties' hair, my grandmother's hair... you get the picture. Naturally, I've become rather paranoid about who handles my hair, other than him. I took my mom's suggestion about going to see a new hairdresser in Oakland Chinatown because it was cheaper ($20, as compared to $100 -- I should have known better). Anyways, I came to New York for college with absolutely butchered hair, a terrible cut, and no clue where to go to get it fixed.
Shaun might actually have magic powers. Seriously. One hour after sitting in his chair, my thick, ridiculously dry, wavy hair turned into this amazing mane of wonder. I'm not even kidding. Like a lot of other reviewers, I gave him rather vague directions -- as in, "Please, just anything better than this." I was absolutely thrilled with the cut I walked out with -- a shoulder length cut that bore absolutely no semblance to what my hair had previously looked like. My hair actually looked healthy, and not like black straw. I know it's New York City, and it's not easy to find good and relatively affordable places to get a good haircut -- this is one of them. Absolutely will not go anywhere else now. Thanks so much Shaun.
Oh, and as a completely random side note, I asked Shaun for suggestions for a good neighborhood cafe to study. He suggested Cafe Angelique, about a block or two away. I went in, sat down, and immediately got compliments on my hair... and even got asked out by a cute waiter. I'm not even kidding. It was probably the hair.Helpful 7Thanks 0Love this 5Oh no 0
