November/Dec News 2012

The busy pre Christmas silly season has begun and who doesn't like special sweets and chocolates in their Santa stocking! Everyone has their own favourite and we have a huge selection that caters for all tastes and ages.
Read on for our latest news.

CARAMEL KISSES are back. A new supply has been found much to our relief and the pleasure of our regulars.

JERSEY CARAMELS - are now made by a new manufacture to a new recipe and they are sensational, just like they used to be.
DUSTED JELLY BABIES - are one of our best sellers. We have the imported English Jelly Babies as always, but now have a new Australian version. The flavours are particularly fresh and a soft texture.
OLD STYLE FRUIT DROPS - Australian made. Individually wrapped. The flavour of these little gems is truly stunning and they look really pretty.
TRAFFIC LIGHTS - are now back in stock after a long hold up with supply. These are perfect for making into stained glass biscuits, along with the old style fruit drops.
DOLLY MIX - We only have a small amount left, but are hopeful that we will get some more in before Xmas.
FLYING SAUCERS - we are going to run out any day now and we  have been informed by the wholesalers that there are none in the country until late Dec/early January. This is not good news.
ANGRY BIRD candy dispensers - are selling like hot cakes!
CHOCOLATE COATED SNAKES - are back in store and our Team have voted them as their new favourite.
TREACLE TOFFEE - we have slabs of Walkers treacle toffee as the small wrapped pieces are not available.
ENGLISH TOFFEE SLABS - made here in Tasmania to the original Thornton's recipe. Rich, buttery and very chewy.
FLORALS - are temporarily out of production due to machine break down. The manufacturer hopes this will be resolved shortly and that the back log can be filled around the end of the month.
GOBSTOPPERS- The Monster and the Mega sizes have been discontinued sadly, and there are no replacements in sight. We have bought up all stock available, but these are the last ever, so soon they will only be a display item.

A reminder about all the different flavours of rock that we have in our jars -

DECEMBER to MARCH NEWS

The silly season is here! So much to do, so much to do..... but it is all part of the fun.

The long stemmed lollipop bunches are always on our counter and at this time of year it is hard to keep up to them as they look so special and are well priced to make them a lovely extra touch to any gift - $3.50 bunch of 5 assorted shapes and colours.
At this time of year we always sell lots and lots of dark choc coated ginger (superior quality) Dark and Milk Almonds, Milk Macadamias, Milk Peanuts, Dark and Milk Raisins (my favourite treat). We have a beautiful mix of Raspberry Creams, Peppermint Dreams and White Chocolate Buttermints in gorgeous wrappers that will look fabulous on any party table.

What's NEW -
Small English Dusted Jelly Babies - wow these are sooo popular! Made by a different maker to the large ones, but they have the same soft texture. The flavours are fresh and more intense. So now you can choose large or small.
Old Fashioned Butterscotch - a boiled lolly, rich and buttery, individually wrapped.
KING RATS - the first batch off the new production line had issues, but we are pleased to announce that we now have a new batch in and they are just great!! We have them tightly sealed in a jar to stop them from running around the shop ;)........
Old Style Fruit Drops - made by the same people that make the Lemon Sherbets. Absolutely beautiful flavours - really intense and they taste of yester year. They are just the right colours and textures to use in Christmas baking for stained glass biscuits etc. Great price as well at only $2.40/100g
Licorice Icecream - we have a new batch in which you all seem to like better. This one is black and white in colour and a good licorice flavour.
Cookies and Cream Icecream - we have got this flavour back in due to popular demand and it will stay for the summer at least.
Christmas Pudding Icecream - comes in a one litre pudding shaped container. Made here in Hobart, it is truly wonderful and a great hit for christmas dinner. I also give these as Christmas gifts and now I get into trouble if I try to get something else.

JULY NEWS
Hello One and All
We are way over due with an update on Sweets and Treats News....
So here we go -
GIANT JELLY BABIES - at long, long last we have the re released, new recipe GIANT JELLY BABIES on the counter. They are very soft and delicious like they used to be. The colours are not the original multi ones that we loved best, but this is as good as it is going to get. We are happy to recommend these once again to all those jelly baby lovers. The manufacturer has also remade the regular size jelly babies and they are arguably the best on the market at the moment also.
RASPBERRY LICORICE - we have a new brand of Raspberry Licorice that is to die for. It is super soft and the raspberry flavour is divine. There is also regular licorce as well and we have both at the moment. If you are a soft licorice person then these are the ultimate in softness and flavour intensity
ICECREAM - Our new freezer displays are finished and we are sooo happy. The icecream  tastes and looks so much better! Our in house Strawberry Choc Chip has proven a hit and we are thinking of adding choc chips to the Coconut as well - we will trial that when the weather gets warmer. There is a new batch of Apricot Brandy serving now and it is better than ever. It really is a taste of summer which is a nice reminder at the moment!
CHOC COATED FRUIT RINGS are back and they are our team favourite!
SHERBET FOUNTAINS are also back in stock with new packaging - not paper anymore sadly.
AMERICAN FAVOURITES - we are now stocking a small range of American favourites like Reese's Peanut Butter Cups, Peanut Butter M&M's and Hershey bars
WHITE KNIGHTS were out of production for a few weeks but this is now rectified.
For winter we have got some new English sweets - BRANDY BALLS and WINTER MIXTURE and APPLE and CUSTARD.
In our hand made range SARSPARILLA is a big hit. These are an acquired taste but a truly old fashioned flavour popular with the oldies.
Our trial of new turkish delight flavours (Orange,Lemon and Cherry) went really well. The first batch sold very quickly and we will order some more in and this time we will try a different flavour as well - Apricot perhaps...?
CHOC COATED CHICOS- due to popular demand we now have choc coated chicos back in stock. We thought you were sick of them but how wrong we were!!! - sorry, we will not delete them again....
The confectionery manufacturers have passed on large price increases over the last month - what a shock.
We have kept them to a minimum in the shop but we have had to let some lines go as we felt they were just too expensive now. Let us know if you can't see your favourite and we will let you know what the status is.

What's popular this month -
Peanut Brittle Slabs
Slate pencils
Musk Sticks
Rocky road-milk and white
Chocolate coated honeycomb
Raspberry Licorice
Licorice Allsorts
Giant Jelly Babies - of course!!!
Super Sour Acid Mix
Dark Choc Almonds
Cobbers
Licorice Blocks

MARCH NEWS

Hello Folks,
Let's get you up to date with all the news from Sweets and Treats.

GIANT JELLY BABIES - what a disastrous saga it still is. We finally received our shipment of the overly long awaited Giant Jelly Babies only to find they were nothing like they used to be!! They were rubbish by comparison. We were all so shocked and disappointed. We voiced our utter dismay to the manufacturer and they admitted that there were problems with the new factory and agreed to look into the Giant Jelly Baby issue. They came back to us and said that they would make changes to the texture and flavour, but they would not be able to reproduce the colours of the original. How disappointing. Then they said they would not release the new version until they got rid of the old stock. How disappointing. We are waiting for a sample package so that we can at least see if they have been able to improve the quality as promised. I am not holding out great hopes. There have been problems with the whole jelly range and they are not very interested in producing a quality product anymore. It is a big company and they do not care about the end user, only the cost and ease of production. How disappointing......... We will let you know when the new stock arrives.
Post Script - The new batch is due off the production line at the end of March

VALHALLA ICECREAM - we have two brand new freezers and more wonderful Tasmanian made icecream from Valhalla. We now have 28 flavours. John and Luke have made a delicious Strawberry Choc Chip icecream for us and we all love it. Lots of customers are having it as a double with the Peppermint Choc Chip - it looks great and they love the combo as well. We have Mango sorbet back in for the warmer weather and Butterscotch, Coconut and Pineapple iceream as well due to customer demand.

FLYING SAUCERS have been out of stock for weeks but we have been told that they may be available again sometime next week.
Post script - Flying saucers are now back on our shelf

TURKISH DELIGHT - the long awaited 3 new flavours will be in our next shipment due next week!! There will be LEMON, ORANGE and CHERRY as well as the traditional ROSE flavour in our counter display for you to try. We are really looking forward to seeing the response from the Turkish Delight lovers.
Post script - We now have them in store and they are fabulous!

ENGLISH SWEETS - one of our wholesalers has offered us a new range of English sweets under the label of BONDS. Now we used to stock a BONDS range of english sweets when we first opened all those years ago, but they disappeared to be replaced with other brands. Bonds were a quality product back then and we are hoping that this is still the case. The range is very much the same as what we currently have, but there are a couple of new things we are hoping to get hold of. We will have more information about what we can get and the prices next week.

RASPBERRY LICORICE - has been unavailable for a few months again. But the great news is that at a recent Trade Show we found a new manufacturer and supplier by chance. The quality of the product is just fantastic - better than we have ever had before. We can't wait for it to come. The only issue is that it only comes in little pieces, not in long logs like we are used to, so we have to decide on the best way of presenting it to you. We are also going to swap over to this new brand with the traditional black licorice as well, including chocolate coated logs, as the quality is so superior and we know you are going to just love it as much as we do. As far as we can tell, the price will be very similar too, which is another reason to be happy. We have been advised that we will have the Raspberry Licorice in store next week. Yay!

COCONUT ICE, CARAMEL FUDGE, CHOCOLATE FUDGE we have established a supply of quality hand made slabs and it is selling like hot cakes.

GUMBALLS - we are still chasing a supplier of good quality regular gum balls (not the fizzy ones). The Jamboree gumball tubes are now available again and this is the best we can do until something else turns up.

At the TRADE FAIR we found some stuff that we thought had been deleted and then a few new things as well. We will tell you about them as they slowly turn up in our orders.

WARNING - manufacturers are starting to advise us that they are about to pass on price increases of approx 10% due to spike in sugar price and transport costs. This rise will take effect in our shop as the new stock comes in over the next couple of weeks. So stock up for Easter ASAP!!!

This months TOP SELLERS are -
Sherbet Cones
Turkish Delight
Raspberry Drops
Fruit Jellies - extra soft and extra delicious
Lemon BonBons - English
Pear Drops - English
Coconut Rough
Hand Made Coconut Ice, Fudge
Mixed Rock - hand made
Super sour acid mix - hand made
Chocolate coated Raspberries - as always!

Happy Munching until next post.

DECEMBER 2010 NEWS

GIANT JELLY BABIES - what a saga! Due to an ordering system failure at the manufacturers we still have not received our supply of much awaited Giant Jelly Babies. I have been assured today that the problem is now sorted and our shipment will be on its way this week. This puts the ETA in to our store on Wednesday the 22nd of December. All we can say is better late than never I guess.......
We have altered our range of scoop icecream. Streets no longer make the premium scoop icecream we have carried for 25 years. The quality of the new range Streets were offering was absolutely woeful, so we have changed all our flavours over to Valhalla Icecream, made here in Tasmania. Previously we used about half Streets and half Valhalla picking the best from each maker. Now that we have made the change we realise we should have done it ages ago anyway! Valhalla have a big variety of fantastic flavours and the premium quality is there for the tasting. So our regulars will notice that some of the icecream looks very different but we are sure they will be thrilled with the Valhalla alternative. We have already trialled some new flavours; Macadamia with marmalade was to die for, it was a wonderful combination loaded with macadamia nuts and loads of real marmalade swirled through; Cinnamon is rich and creamy and not too strong; Christmas Pudding is back for the festive season and full of rum and fruit; Rocky Road is really popular, loaded with marshmallows, raspberry swirl and nuts. We will keep introducing new flavours so we can all try them out. We have ordered new freezer displays so that we will be able to carry 29 Flavours at once, so choosing a flavour is about to get even harder!!
With Christmas only days way now, the sales of anything ginger are going through the roof. Dark chocolate ginger is always a big winner and Ginger Butters are the boiled sweet alternative, made here in Tasmania - people keep returning for more. English Dolly Mix is another Christmas specialty along with English Licorice Allsorts.

What are the top sellers at the moment???
Choc coated Aniseed Rings (milk or dark)
Choc coated coffee beans (mix of milk, dark, white)
English dusted jelly babies
Pineapples
Musk sticks
Slate pencils
Giant Freckles
Umbrella lollipops
Rocky Road (milk or white chocolate)
Super Sour Acid Mix
Raspberry Drops

We wish you all a Merry Christmas and Happy Munching!
Cheers from The Sweets and Treats Team

October Update

Hi Folks,
We have 3 new hand made treats for you this month. Firstly, Fruit Drops - traditonal round balls of fruit flavoured toffee in red, yellow, green and orange. The flavours are just divine, really fresh and crisp. Secondly, Peanut Brittle drops - a dark toffee ball with bits of peanut. These are a very different product to our Peanut Brittle slab which is made to a different recipe. Some people will like the convenience of the consistent shape and size of the drops compared to the broken slab pieces. Thirdly, Eucalyptus Drops - yellow and green toffee drops with a distinct eucalyptus flavour. You can smell the sweet eucalyptus aroma as soon as we open the jar. Customers have been asking for these old style eucalyptus drops for ages as an alternative to Eucalypties, which have a soft centre. The flavour is neither too strong, nor too timid - just right in our opinion. Try some and tell us what you think. Remember when you come in to the shop there is always a tray of samples for you to try!
GIANT JELLY BABIES are back in production as of 19 Oct. We have placed an order and waiting our turn for delivery!!!!!!! Hopefully this will be in the first week of November. Boy, are we excited............
sad news - our wholesaler forgot to order our new flavours of turkish Delight. Now that has made us very cross, but not much we can do about it now, but wait until the next shipment. Cadbury New Zealand stopped the manufacture of Toasties briefly, but we now have them back in stock. We also have a New Zealand product called Eskimos on the shelf as something new for us. They are hard to describe..... like a hard marshmallow in texture (like the lolly bananas) in three colours pink, white and green, in the shape similar to a big jelly baby. I nearly forgot, we now have Irish Cream Almonds back on the shelf to please the regulars - a delicious alternative to plain choc almonds.
In our icecream freezer, we now have Coconut Icecream back due to customer demand. It is soooo nice I could eat the whole tub myself!! The Rum and Raisin has been really popular lately, along with the Jamaican Coffee. There are so many wonderful flavours that it is too hard to choose just one, so we offer a twin serve, which is 2 small scoops on a cone so that makes the decision a little easier!
So what has been jumping off the shelf this month -
Candy Bullets
Extra soft Fruit Jellies
English Dusted Jelly Babies
Red Frogs
Sarsparilla Rock
Peanut Clusters
Happy Munching from the Sweets and Treats Team ;)
