Toro 38361 Power Shovel 7.5 Amp Electric Snow Blower

With a 12-inch cutting width and a 20-foot throwing distance, you'll clear your snow quickly. Click here for a larger image

With a snow-throwing capacity of 300 pounds per minute, you can clear 4 inches of snow off a 50-by-20-foot driveway down to the pavement in just 20 minutes. With a clearing width of 12 inches and a snow cut depth up to 6 inches per pass, the Power Shovel will let you clean off walkways with a couple quick passes. And weighing in at just 13 pounds, the snow blower can be lifted, turned, and twisted with ease.

Power Curve technology and 7.5 amp electric motor moves up to 300 pounds of snow per minute.

The Power Shovel gives you fast, effective snow removal and can help you to avoid sore backs caused by shoveling and time wasted taking care of huge, complicated snow blowers. The compact electric shovel employs a streamlined auger drive system, which uses a single rotor with two curved blades to quickly and effectively move snow out of your way.

Compact and Easy to Maintain with Electric Power

With no gas or oil to burn through, no spark plugs to change, and no time-consuming tune-ups, this electric snowblower is very cost-effective. Its ultra-compact size makes it easier to maneuver than big, gas-powered units, and it's easier to store, too. Exceptional ease of handling makes the small, versatile Toro Power Shovel ideal for spaces like balconies, decks, and staircases.

When you do want to clear a larger area, you'll appreciate the surprisingly powerful nature of this lightweight machine. It features a series-wound 7.5 amp motor, which is designed to produce high torque at lower speeds, making it a perfect choice for clearing snow.

The cord lock system eliminates one of the potential downfalls of using electric products by ensuring your extension cord is reliably locked in place. And with electric power, the snowblower is easy to start up, even on the coldest days, so you'll never have to worry about the frustration of dealing with a pull cord.

Adjustable, Ergonomic Features for Comfort

A telescoping handle lets you adjust the snow blower to fit your height. The height and angle of the lower operating handle are adjustable too, so you can truly customize the way the tool fits in your hands. Toro covers the Power Shovel snow blower with a full two-year warranty.

Lightweight and easy to use. Adjust the operator handle's angle and/or height as needed. Sliding and rotating adjustments ensure enhanced control and comfort.
Cord-lock system helps ensure the cord doesn't become unplugged during use. Adjust the length of the telescoping handle to suit your height. Cost effective and maintenance-free--no gas or oil needed.

Out-of-the-box experience
The Toro arrived this afternoon via UPS, so I immediately unboxed it and followed the installation instructions. There are only 3 simple things to do: 1) Screw on the Upper Handle, 2) Insert the metal rod (lever) that turns the chute, and 3) Put the 2 cord clips on the handle.Starting with unboxing the machine, it's pretty easy. There are even instructions on the box flap on how to best get the snowblower out of the box. [Thumbs Up]. However, I heard something loose inside the box which turned out to be one set of the bolt, washer and turn-knob for the handles floating around inside (These are supposed to be attached to the lower handle loosely). [Thumbs Down on Quality Control].At Step 1, I ran into a problem. Of the 2 bolts that attach the upper handle to the lower handle, I simply cannot tighten the turn-knob onto 1 of the bolt (the other bolt worked fine). I suspect it's a defective bolt and will try to contact Toro for a replacement. Will update what happens.Step 2 was pretty simple. The metal rod (lever) is supposed to be inserted into the hole directly under the chute and snaps in place. But I find that metal rod slips out of its socket way too easily. If the lever isn't pushed in hard while attempting to turn the chute direction, it simply comes loose. I can probably live with this by turning the chute directly by hand (rather than via the lever). But its a Thumbs Down.Step 3 was snapping the cord holder in place. It's not easy at first, but figured out that bending the little plastic piece inside the round clips helps.I will continue with the review to update response from customer service and after using it for snow.[UPDATE #1]I contacted Toro customer service online to submit what the problem was and requested a new oval bolt. This was on a Friday. Amazingly, on Monday (which was MLK holiday), I received an email saying a "Screw Handle" will be sent out to me. I was a little worried that this "Screw Handle" mentioned in the email was not the same as the oval bolt that I need, so I called Toro and spoke to a live person. While the person on the phone checked on something, I must have gotten disconnected (waited forever and the person never came back on the phone).... Well, I just hung up.By Thursday, I received a UPS package with 1 oval bolt. Surprisingly, on Friday, I received another UPS package with 2 oval bolts (this must be from the phone call). So, I'm very happy with the TORO customer service. That's why I bumped my rating on this item from an initial 3 star to 4 star. BTW, I used 1 of the replacement Oval Bolt and it works as it should (no more problem).Still hasn't snowed yet but I'll update on the performance of the snowblower when I get to use it.[UPDATE #2 - 2/9/2013]We just had a blizzard with 2+ ft of heavy snow. This was for sure an ultimate test for this Toro. Well, I have a driveway that fits 2 cars front-to-back and it took me close to 5 hrs to finish clearing it. It took lots of muscle effort (my arms are so sore), but to be fair, I probably couldn't have done it without the Toro. Not only would each shovel be real heavy, the need to throw it high to the top of the growing snowbank would be way too difficult. So I probably 'earned' back half the cost of this machine with just this snow event. So, the pros is that this Toro is really light. So I lifted it into my house, next to the front door, the night before the storm. It was easy to position it thru out the snow clearing. The Toro did not cut the entire height of the snow... it was 2 ft+ of heavy snow, and based on the previous reviews, I was not surprised here. I had to manually take down the 2 ft high snow and spread it out, then run the Toro over the lowered snow. So it took a little patience to progress about 2 feet forward at a time. Still if I hand-shoveled, the effort would be much greater than pushing the Toro back and forth. The pushing motion was not exactly light work and I wish the wheels were even bigger. Putting pressure to slightly tilt the front down helps to clear down to the pavement. As far as how 'heavy-duty' this is, I was a little worried that it'll overheat of break on me. Also, I should've remembered to be more 'gentle' and avoid plowing the Toro into high snow without first taking it down, but after having done it too many times to count, it still worked fine. I'll remember that there's a risk of breaking the belt next time.I like that the chute stayed exactly where it was set to. I read that the SnowJoe has problem with this and I'm so glad I ended up not buying the SJ. Depending on the wind and the amount of snow being expelled, I had lots of instances when the snow smashed right back at my face. The throw distance was ok for a 1 car width driveway. Given I was dealing with heavy snow, I think it performed ok for such a light plastic machine. I bought a 50 ft 12 ga cord and I did not find it difficult to deal with.

I usually don't take time writing reviews but this electric shovel, which is inexpensive, uses little space for storing in a tight garage & 100% works is worth giving my praise. So that you know my physical limitations, I'm a 66 yr. old out of shape female who within the past 9 mo's have had a rt. knee & rt. hip replaced plus some minor back problems. I purchased this to clear off the part of the sidewalk that goes to the driveway and a large portion of the yard so that our little dogs had a place to go potty. Using this little gem for the first time this winter after having about 6-8 inches of snow made my job simple & quick unlike back-breaking, exhausting hand shoveling, which I couldn't have done. Because of its light weight, it was easy to push, & threw the snow a long ways ahead if itself rather than hand shoveling where you end up with a mound that you have to continually lift & move again thus making it back breaking. I followed the directions I saw on YouTube for deeper snow. In those areas I hand held it & ran it across part way down those deeper areas then came back & put & pushed it on top of the ground as usual. There was no place where I had a deep mound of ending snow like when you hand shovel. As far as my opinion of negative comments, I personally appreciate the fact that you have to hold the safety switch down as I have borders around the trees & other parts in front of the house that I don't want the machine to grind into & want it to shut off at the lift of a finger; a battery operated machine would only add negative unnecessary weight at least for me; in my condition, I wouldn't use it to shovel a big driveway that gets a lot of snow (we hire that done by someone who uses a big snow plow). Remember, this is an electric snow "shovel," not a snow plow. I also appreciate the fact that the blades are metal & not plastic. A big thanks to whoever invented this!!

I live in central Massachusetts, so we get a lot of snow of different types with varying levels of moisture. For over the past 10 years, my neighbor has plowed my driveway, but this summer he told me that he was out of the plowing business, so I needed to look at other alternatives.

Of course I eventually settled on this snow blower. I did so since I didn't want yet another gas-powered machine to have to take care of. As a possible secondary benefit, it might be better for the environment than a gas machine, but pollution is created making electricity so it's hard to tell.

After several punishing storms and one mild snow fall, here are my observations:

* Throwing Ability: I've not used a snow blower before, but I am very pleased at this unit's ability to throw the snow between 10 and 25 feet, depending on the snow density and the angle of the exit chute.

* Cutting Depth and Width: The cutting width is adequate, although certainly wider is better, IMO. I was concerned how the unit would perform with a deep snowfall. Turns out, it works super. What I do is push the handle down to elevate the opening to the top of the snow depth, throw the top snow off, and then I raise the handle, lowering the opening, and throw the bottom snow. I've also used it to chew through snow deeper than even this technique can handle, and the unit still works great. So I am now happy to know that I do not have to keep up with a snowstorm or blizzard.

* Usability: Because of the length of my driveway, I bought a 100' outdoor, cold-weather extension cord. As people have noted, you have to manage the extension cord as you walk around, but it's not an issue at all. The only time it's a pain is when I coil the cord when I'm done, since a 100' foot extension cord gets pretty heavy during coiling! The unit's controls are very simple: make sure the grey key is inserted, press the small red button, and then the large red bar. To stop, just release the bar. Since the snow blower is so light, I carry it into my backyard and use it to clear around my hot tub.

* Build Quality: I've seen people complain about the unit consisting of too much plastic, and they're correct in that the unit is primarily plastic from what I can see. I'd definitely would feel more comfortable with metal blade/scooper, but despite the punishment I've throw at this unit, including the partially-frozen end-of-driveway crud with small chunks, the blade is holding up well with only some small dings. It's got a two-year warranty, so if the scooper breaks, I'll call Toro. But so far, so excellent!

When I had my driveway plowed, I still had to shovel in front of the garage doors, shovel the main walkway, shovel around the hot tub, and shovel out the mailbox. Now, I do very little shoveling, with a whole let less sweating. I'm not sure how this will affect my electricity bill, but I'm a big fan of this snow-eating monster.

I did lots of research before buying this machine last winter. I need something inexpensive, easy for storage and strong enough for most snow conditions.
Unlike the gas blowers, this machine is very light weight and small size so it won't need much space in my small garage. It can be hang on wall.
Though its power cannot compare to many gas blowers, its already much better than all the cordless ones and most corded electric ones. I used it for last Ontario winter. Perfect for normal medium size yards and 4~10 inches snows. Generally takes 15~20 min to finish the jobs.
The only thing is that you need to play around with a long cord when snow-blowing back and forth. But if you have the same concerns of mine (inexpensive, easy for storage with the best power), then this is the one of the best machines should be considered. All you need is to buy an long extension cable ( I chose a Coleman 100 feet outdoor cable at low price) and learn how to run with the cable back and forth.
I recommend this good product.

3.0 out of 5 stars Dead after two years of use. It worked good while alive.

This machine saved time and effort but beware of some shortcomings that will greatly affect the expected life:

- Electric motor is not fully isolated thus some snow/water will enter it and eventually rust it
- Rust and humidity in the electric motor will short it over time causing premature death
- Electric motor replacement is as expensive as a new machine thus design is set for a lot of waste

My machine mechanics are good for at least two or three more years of work but the busted electric motor coupled with a very high price for replacement just rendered the whole apparatus a landfill shame.

4.0 out of 5 stars Good little unit - wondering about reliability - great service so far

13 month Update:
After 13 months, it died, fortunately it has a 2 yr warranty. Some of the neg revs mentioned water getting into the motor and I think this happened to mine. It would stop working when it got wet, but would work again after it dried out for several days, but the run times got shorter and shorter. I've decided to keep my 4 star rating for now because of the superb warranty service I received from a local Toro dealer. Even though I didn't buy from them, after warranty was confirmed they just handed me a brand new one from their inventory. 15 min in and out, wow! Now I've got 11 months left to see how well the replacement will hold up. I still think this model is really good when it works, if you respect it's mostly plastic with an electric motor the size of an orange. I will probably now make an effort to dry the outside of the unit off instead of putting it back in the garage covered in snow. Not sure that will make a difference, but since my garage is insulated and is usually above freezing even on cold days it would stay dripping wet for a couple days after each use.

Original review:
Had it for 6 weeks so far, through a few snow falls. First, for hard compacted snow (driven on, or plow ridge that's been left to harden for a day or two) this is not going to do a good job at all. You probably don't want to be using this on hardened ice chunks left by vehicles. Expect to get the shovel out for these cases. For non-compacted snow (freshly fallen), I've been fairly pleased with how well it works clearing my driveway which is 3 small car widths wide, and 2 small car lengths. The throw distance says UP TO 30ft, but in typical snow conditions you can expect maybe 12 to 18ft for most of the snow going through the unit. Dry, fluffy snow can be thrown fairly far if the wind is your friend. Setting the chute to point forward instead of up helps a bit to keep the snow from blowing around if windy while maintaining decent distance. But for wetter heavier snow, you really need to keep the chute pointed up for decent distance. You can't point the chute forward for heavy snow because it slows the eject speed down so much you'll only get 4 to 6 ft distance.

Otherwise, the unit is light and easy to maneuver, and chomps through light to moderately heavy snow as deep as the unit's intake. The motor bogs a bit with heavy stuff but manages to keep the snow moving. I've had no issues so far with snow clogs.

Love it.
We usually have short but intense snow falls in BC where I live (Fraser Valley).
Overnight dumps of about 10-25cm which then stay for a week.
Shoveling that with a bad back is excruciating, to say the least, especially if it is wet snow.

This little thing is 100% up to the task. As long as the snow is not covered by a thick ice sheet, it powers through.
Easy to assemble out of the box, easy to store, just fold up the handle.
Nice evenly balanced grip on the device for carrying.
Love especially that I can adjust the direction it throws the snow w/o letting go of the handle, perfect for my house's driveway and walkway layout.
Easy, big gripped handle to adjust the angle it throws the snow, even when wearing gloves.
Relatively silent operation.
Easy to clean afterward. Basically, just brush it off and let it stand somewhere where it can drip off.
Throws very wet snow about 4-6 meters, normal/dryer snow up to 10m and more.
Saved me a lot of pain, makes cleaning my driveway and the walkways around my house a 15-20 minute affair if the snow is less than 25cm.
If the snow is higher, I may need a second round or several runs with narrower lines, but that is basically it.
Would buy again.

Rod
5.0 out of 5 stars very good unit and very light to use

used it a few times....works very good on a few inches only....if heavier snow, just bite a narrower strip....threw the snow very well. This is a good machine for the few times I used it....don't know how long it will hold up
the only problem is dealing with the heavy electrical cable which hardens when its freezing...nothing to do with the unit, but something to consider when purchasing. Unit is light enough for anyone to lift...I hung it on a hook during the winter. Zero maintenance, easy to wipe down. Narrow enough to use on a walkway between stones and shrubs....so you can use it in tighter places a large unit can't maneuver. It even threw icy slush right across the front lawn which would have given a larger unit issues...so this is a winner for what it was designed for. Keep it away from brittle ice and stones etc and it should last a while
