BEHIND THE SCENES AT SAB

@SAB_NYC

Our National Visiting Fellows are back in the SAB studios for their second and final week-long session of the program. In addition to deepening their knowledge of the SAB curriculum, observing classes, and spending time with our full-time faculty members, each Fellow will have the opportunity to teach our students this week. We can't wait for them to bring their expertise and enthusiasm to our B1 and B2 classes!

SAB is currently accepting applications for the 2024-25 National Visiting Fellows program. If you or someone you know is a U.S.-based classical ballet instructor with a proven commitment to teaching students from diverse backgrounds, we encourage you/them to apply to be considered for next year's cohort.

George Balanchine’s fond memories of his childhood experiences performing with the Imperial Ballet in Russia inspired him to create a similar opportunity for SAB’s young students. Head over to our blog to read the latest #SAB90 post on the history of how several ballets in the New York City Ballet repertoire were choreographed to include students from the School, including the holiday classic GEORGE BALANCHINE'S THE NUTCRACKER®, MOZARTIANA, A MIDSUMMER NIGHT'S DREAM and more.

See our students perform Balanchine's iconic SERENADE at our 2024 Workshop Performances and Workshop Benefit this June. Tickets are on sale now: #LinkInBio

This ballet holds special significance to the School, as it was choreographed on the first class of advanced students when SAB opened in 1934. There are elements of the ballet that directly relate to the history of the School, such as the 17 dancers in the opening formation - allegedly due to how many students were in class the day Mr. B began choreographing - or the moment when a single dancer joins the formation late - supposedly due to the real occurrence of a student arriving late to rehearsal.

Since it first appeared in Workshop in 1974, SERENADE has been included in the program every few years as a nod to this special history. Now, for the 90th Anniversary of both the School and the ballet, it is only fitting for current students to have the opportunity to perform this stunning work once again at this year's Workshop.
