What a great spot me and a friend just happened upon. She was getting her hair done across the street. So many friends want to "go to coffee" with me but I don't drink coffee. Imagine my surprise when I go to a coffee shop assuming I am stuck with water yet there are smoothies?!? And next...I have smoothie options?!? WHAT?? And I can add a banana?? AND IT'S DELICIOUS! My friend got a chai she was not amused with while I sucked every ounce of that delicious smoothie down. Now I want to make excuses to go there and grab one.
I might also mention there is some pretty great seating both inside and outside. I loved that it is also sort of tucked away from the more busy sections of this area.Helpful 0Thanks 0Love this 1Oh no 0 - 2863083926Feb 21, 2018
People there are friendly, high ceilings, open space, and quiet. It is very relaxing. The soup there is great, the toasted cheese sandwiches are okay. They have wifi there if you need to do some work or just study. I will definitely go there again.

Got a small (8oz cf. "short" at Starbux) latte and a medium (12oz cf. "tall" at Stabux) mocha. Nothing special. Used the Yelp check-in offer of 20% off the first order and neither the barista nor the back-up (co-owner?) knew of the offer... but they honored it anyway.
Pretty relaxed environment, nice seating, music at a pleasant level for me, the old guy.
The seating along the walls has electrical outlets (though they may be disguised/hidden by the dark wood), so it's a good spot for laptop-based students or work-from-Homers.
It's a clean café and they also offer some food, though we didn't try it today. It's right by REI, so it was a convenience stop.Helpful 1Thanks 0Love this 1Oh no 0 - Jul 14, 2010
I absolutely remember my first visit here, when things around the street were not quite yet built out... I probably came to patronize within a month or two of their first opening.....
and found the space like an open gallery.... wonderful for this immediate area, which doesn't have too many go-to solid cafes. I'm a fan of their color scheme, their lay-out, and for filling in the gap where a cafe was needed.
The coffee was solid but i cannot say that it was a huge standout in taste or bouquet (sorry). Huge area for ensuring your own personal space, and interesting architectural look in this part of the Pearl.Helpful 2Thanks 0Love this 2Oh no 0 - Gracie G.Portland, OR19974Nov 30, 2018
I love it here! I work remotely and used to use Urban Grind essentially an office. Now that I'm further along in my career and understand that this is kind of a rude thing to do to other patrons (and the business when it gets busy) I come as often as I can. If you like to work or study in coffee shops, this is THE spot. SO. MANY. OUTLETS. A variety of tables, couches, and standing bars, clean restrooms, and a variety of offerings. The wifi has been upgraded and it's much faster now. I also love the warm and soft lighting.
The staff is lovely. This is a family business and it warms my heart to see the owner and his lovely wife and daughters in here. You should feel good about giving this place your business. It's a nice throwback to coffee shops in the 90s that didn't focus on being "cool" and spartan. This has a much more genuine feeling. Here now ;)Helpful 1Thanks 0Love this 0Oh no 0 - Rolling Along ..Portland, OR0476676Jan 28, 2017Updated review
This place is great, one of my favorite coffee shops.
Very cool, low key place. -Regular coffee, mocha, and humus bagel sandwiches are all good. The pastries are fresh and the coffee cake and scones are not too sweet.
Usually plenty of seating room (tables, bar stools, sofas); nice views outside; a soft, dark brown interior; they have pastries and make sandwiches; the music and staff are always super chill; Wifi internet access; outdoor seating area.Helpful 0Thanks 0Love this 0Oh no 0May 29, 2016Previous reviewVery cool, low key place. -Regular coffee, mocha, and humus bagel sandwiches are all good.

I don't know of anywhere other then this place that charges $2 for 8oz of drip coffee and $1 for a splash of almond milk. I live across the street and want to love this coffee shop, but honesty the pricing doesn't make sense. Gotta go to Nossa a little further down the street.

A bit of a throw back in that they've got some plush couches, coffee tables, and "warmer" tones and decor, compared to the modern rage of stainless, glass, and butcher block. High ceilings, a fair amount of light, and a nice space. Also a little throwback that they control wifi access with receipt slips that give you two hour access. This is the kind of coffee shop where I'd feel just as comfortable on my laptop as reading a book.
I can't comment on the coffee since I only had a ceylon tea, which was good. Nice loose leaf in a big mug with a simple little saucer.Helpful 0Thanks 0Love this 1Oh no 0 - Mimi S.Everett, WA5562Jan 4, 2018
Urban Grind is okay.
Pros
* Not as busy as other shops in the area so it was easy enough to find a place to sit and work.
* The worker I spoke to was friendly enough.
* Good variety of teas
Cons
* WiFi resets every two hours. You have to go up to the counter to get a new password.
* it was a bit chilly in the shop.
* the sweet chai I ordered was pretty bland
* you can't tip with card, which is really awkward cause I like tipping my baristas!
Honestly I'll probably only be back if all the other coffee shops in the area are full.Helpful 0Thanks 0Love this 0Oh no 0
