Today I received am email from a scammer who used bECU's logo and customer service number to lure me in. As I had just received a text from the actual BECU regarding possible fraud, I believed the text to be legitimate, especially given the logo and phone number. After a 45-minute conversation, I realized that something was wrong. I drove to the Shoreline branch, nervous and frightened. Seeing my distress, Kenmar Buai actually extended his hands to give mine some reassurance. Perhaps an hour and a half later, he smiled and told me that the complicated process of voiding my cards, reporting the fraud, going through the steps to fix possible identity theft, and opening a new account. Kenmar's patience, kindness, and calming presence had me breathing once again. I could not be more pleased, as I have been ever since joining BECU a year and a half ago.

We've been with BECU for 13+ years. (Read my prior review to learn why I think this credit union's member service & management has gone downhill.) I used to use BECU's travel alert system whenever I left the state, esp going to Arizona in the winter. After BECU refused to call or reimburse me for a fraudulent charge from Mexico on an unused credit card from Mexico - and me never having been to Mexico, I figured there was no point in using the travel alert. On Jan 24, 2024, I took a credit card advance of $1000, which is immediate - no delay. However, some time AFTER BECU put $1000 in my checking account, they saw I was in Arizona and locked down the account without contacting me. After being a member for about 15 years and everything I've been through, they couldn't call me??? I have had two mortgages with them, and other loans - and a lengthy history and a credit score of 824 (HAD that score). My Bill Pay system had 7 to 10 bills being paid on Jan 25th, and they shut them down and refused payment. Most companies' system automatically try twice - still rejected. All the time, I have NO IDEA what is going on. Cut to today - it is March 18, and I am STILL bearing the consequences of BECU doing this to me, and there is much more to the hell I've been through. I did NOTHING wrong. There is no BECU rule that says I must put in a travel alert. If they are going to question members, their Cash Advance shouldn't be immediate. The hassle of changing credit unions - and not knowing what I'm moving to - feels like I'm forced to put up with this abuse from a credit union that farms all its services out to for-profit companies that BECU has NO oversight over! How does that work for a non-profit credit union? They took money from me - on a fraudulent charge - and then harass me for months! If you are looking to come to BECU, don't do it. I'm one a responsible and economically stable member and this is how I am treated.

Apr 25, 2022Previous reviewWe joined BECU 12 or 13 years ago, and they were an amazing credit union. We were so impressed! Responsive, highly trained and answered the phone immediately. The BillPay system is the best I have ever experienced (and the reason for 2 stars). The client service has been so poor these past several years, I actually looked up the leadership history. About 6 or 7 years ago, the head of BECU changed - and the head of a commercial bank took over BECU. That has always explained, to me, what happened to this formerly fabulous credit union. Last week I needed to dispute a credit card charge, and ended up being transferred to THREE different people with three different stories. The ordeal took well over an hour. I told the 3rd person I wasn't going to give up, and she told me that I'd have to cancel my card (the other two just bounced me back and forth). All 3 gave me totally different explanations of BECU's rules. No kidding! I kept trying to explain to the third person, and she finally changed her story and told me she'd snail mail me a dispute to sign, etc. Training is such an issue with BECU. 2 1/2 years ago, I found a charge of about $1600 on my BECU credit card when someone either put a down payment on a timeshare in Mexico, or bought a week in a timeshare in Mexico. The problem was that the credit card was brand new and had never seen the light of day or had been used, except for direct credit card balance transfers with BECU - which is why I got the card. In fact, the credit card was sitting in a dresser drawer in our (secure) vacation home 1300 miles from our existing home for six months. The ONLY way anyone would know that number would be someone who worked for BECU or for one of the contracted businesses that BECU uses for some of their services. BECU would have none of this! Even though they could see the charge made in Mexico. Because I didn't report it within the required timeframe - I didn't look at my statement. Would anyone look at a credit card statement for a card that they've never used? I had no reason to suspect fraudulent use. We even use the travel feature of BECU whenever , and we use the travel feature when we leave our state so BECU knows exactly where we are and could track our activities! We've never been to Mexico! We lost $1600 within 60 days of getting a new credit card with BECU and never using it, other than directly with BECU for balance transfers. When we sought financing for our vacation home, we got a woman in their mortgage department who had no idea how to treat other humans and had a problem with ethics. She was rude, condescending, and couldn't remember what she had said - as well as couldn't make deadlines. Like others, I have also sat in a neighborhood center for hours, waiting in line for business that can't be done on line; I've sat on the phone for 45min to an hour or more for help. But, this credit union has much bigger problems than just not enough staff - it has become just like a commercial bank - heartless, and in some cases, inept. The 2 stars are for the bill pay system and for the past when BECU was wonderful to work with. We have loans and debt with BECU, so we're still there.

Worst car loan servicer I've ever used. I swear they're trying to sabotage you the whole time. Their payment system is convoluted and something you'd see on their portal looks and acts like it's from the early 2000's. We paid off our loan and somehow they managed to lose our title and so now it's been an extra difficult time trying to resolve the issue. I'm glad I'll never have to use them again and I hope no one else ever has to.

The Quicken link has been down for a couple of months now and this is the second episode of this in the last year or so. I have very little issue with any other account I sync with Quicken. I am getting nervous they have bad IT systems or not investing in their infrastructure.
I have been with BECU since the 80's. I have stopped using their credit card and my next move is to find another online banking service. If you are shopping for a banking service, find one that can manage internet banking transactions.Helpful 0Thanks 0Love this 0Oh no 0Business owner information

Hi James. In late June, BECU’s monitoring system began detecting suspicious attempts to access accounts through the OFX (Open Financial Exchange) direct-connect function. As soon as we learned of the issue, we made the decision to turn off the direct-connect function in Online Banking. At this time, we are taking steps to implement the necessary controls to safeguard member accounts and information. We recognize the impact to members who rely on this service, and we are working to restore this function in Online Banking as quickly as possible. Thank you for being a member.

BECU are thieves, I withdrew 9000$ from their ATM which I didn't feel comfortable doing but this is what they told me to do, they shorted me 100$ and refused to make it right. #uck the thieves at BECU.
I'll be closing my accounts.
Do not bank with these clowns.Helpful 0Thanks 0Love this 0Oh no 0Business owner information

May 24, 2023Previous reviewIt may be time for me to rethink my business with BECU. I have excellent credit, I have bought 4 cars through them, I have 7 accounts with BECU, I have personal lines of credit, credit cards that are ALL in great standing without any missed or late payments. I opened a business account with them with my EIN with a hard pull on my personal credit and then get declined from my local BECU for a line of credit for my business! YOU DO EVERYTHING RIGHT AND THEN GET DECLINED AND DINGED ON CREDIT? There are too many options out there that could have gone to but I thought that I had a good relationship with BECU. APPARENTLY NOT. THANKS BECU... MORE TO COME

It's interesting that BECU responds to reviews from some social media account but there Deceased Account group has zero proactive responses. I've spent months and hours searching there website on how to close an account, sent them dozens of forms, sent them emails and no results. It's a shame they treat members in this fashion when they are deceased. It seems to be known by estate attorneys that they are impossible to work with. I'd caution existing members to be aware of this. Most financial institutions have a straightforward process for handling this.

My wife and I opened a joint account about 15 years ago. They are friendly but whenever I call for information or need assistance they need an ok from my wife to talk to me. ???? We went on and opened the joint account together, because her name was first on the application??? My wife and have told them several times that it's a joint account and we both should have the same access but they don't seem to care. Very frustrating. Next , there ads always boast that they are a not for profit and offer great rates. Well I have been a customer for over 15 years, never bounced a check, have great credit but they are over 1% more interest rate. I would expect a member
Owned not for profit credit union would be able to offer a long term customer a better rate than a big box bank.... Oh wellHelpful 1Thanks 0Love this 0Oh no 0Business owner information

Update to my previous review dated 11/27/2021: Once again, we received an automated nuisance call from BECU yesterday informing us that they declined a charge on our VISA card. This was a pending charge for a valid purchase we initiated that had already been declined and then approved approx. two months ago after jumping through hoops with the BECU security team. A charge to a well-known and reputable vendor no less; they were getting ready to ship so the final charge was posted to our account.
We ceased using the BECU VISA after the incident in November so if anyone from BECU sees this please have someone contact us so we can cancel the card. A representative here on Yelp advised me that one of their team would be contacting me to resolve this. They never did. We're done with this nonsense. And if I sound upset, that would be an understatement.Helpful 1Thanks 0Love this 0Oh no 0Business owner information

Nov 27, 2021Previous reviewWe are frustrated beyond measure with BECU. We make large credit card purchases periodically -- even to repeat vendors -- and BECU invariably shuts down our card and initially denies the charges for no reason other than their "algorithms" detect fraud. Well then, fix your algorithms because this is not "consumer protection" this is harassment. It is infuriating to the point that we will no longer use the BECU Visa for significant purchases and will use one of their competitor's cards for all future large transactions. We would close our account except for the fact that our online accounting history is too tied up in BECU's transaction records; it would be difficult to start over with another bank.
Additionally, their website interface is antiquated and unreliable. They routinely take their site down for back end maintenance during peak business hours instead of during the night. And the accessibility to online customer service is minimal (if you can find it at all).
In short, if you're considering opening an account at BECU I would advise looking elsewhere.
