0103: Right then. The clock has struck one, which means it is two hours since the transfer window shut, and it seems a good time to wrap our deadline coverage up. Thanks for keeping me company during an exciting day that might have lacked truly mind-blowing deals but had enough twists and turns to keep us going into the early hours. I've been Chris Bevan and you lot have been magnificent. Thanks too to Sam Lyon for kicking this whole thing off about 17 hours ago. Medals all round as far as I'm concerned, and for the rest of the BBC journalists who contributed to our text commentary too. I'm off to bed, but I'll see you again on Friday for Bulgaria versus England, and more. Cheerio for now.

toongaz on Twitter: "Re 0051. Ahhhh that explains it, Beattie is Newcastle's dream number nine. He's free. "

0058: Stoke City boss Tony Pulis on his deadline day capture of Cameron Jerome, Wilson Palacios and now Peter Crouch: "There has been a real buzz of excitement around the city about where this Club is going since we reached the FA Cup Final and then started our Europa League adventure. These signings certainly add to that great sense of anticipation."

0056: DONE DEAL
Yey! It's the one we were all waiting for. Stoke City have confirmed they have broken their transfer record to sign Tottenham striker Peter Crouch for £10m, potentially rising to £12m. What took them so long?

briz_in_japan on Twitter: "Re 0042. es, Everton have no time to spend the cash, but it isn't there to spend! We've already been told it's going to the bank!"

0051: Here's an interesting one, especially if you are fan of a Premier League club in need of a striker. James Beattie has been released by Rangers, meaning he is now a free agent who can join anyone regardless of the fact the deadline has passed. Anyone interested?

0048: Congratulations if you are still awake and are still with me. It is almost two hours since the transfer window shut and still no official confirmation that Peter Crouch has joined Stoke. Is he hiding somewhere at the Britannia Stadium? I'm tempted to go there and try and find him myself...

Chelsea fan ProcterCFC on Twitter: "I dont think Meireles will be good enough to start for us, but I hope he proves me wrong."

Unhappy Spurs fan Zapsta on Twitter: "Big money in from the sales of Palacios, Crouch, Hutton, yet, for the second year in a row, very little spent. Disappointed."

Handshake
0043: DONE DEAL
Speaking of which, I don't think I actually announced this as a done deal. Striker Denis Stracqualursi (see below), 23, has joined Everton on a season-long loan Argentinian side Tigres.

0042: Hmmm, seems some of you Everton fans were happy with deadline day dealings. Yes, Mikel Arteta is injury prone and £10m is not a bad price but you had no time to spend the money on a replacement. I guess we will have to wait and see how Denis Stracqualursi and Royston Drenthe do in the Premier League too...

homsey73 on Twitter: "Re 0012. Yakubu and Arteta have been trading on past glories since their injuries - our loan signings may be an improvement."

BBC 5 live's Juliette Ferrington on Twitter: "Hearing that when Crouch arrived here tonight the first thing he had was a curry in the Stoke City canteen."

From Daniel, a Magpies fan in Newcastle, via text: "How has it taken us eight months to NOT find a replacement for Carroll, but Arsenal, Chelsea and Stoke can sign people within hours. Oh that's it - they have people at the top who want success not just a profit!"

delzer on Twitter: "Arteta inconsistent and injury prone last 2 seasons. would have been good business for Everton if a replacement signed."

BBC radio 5 live senior football reporter Ian Dennis on Twitter: "Premier League clubs now have until 5pm on Friday to register their 25 man squads with the Premier League."

Handshake
0030: DONE DEAL
Another Everton departure we were waiting for confirmation on. Striker Jermaine Beckford has joined big-spending Championship side Leicester for a fee which could rise to £4m.

JohannesLanger on Twitter: "Honestly a bad day for both north east Premier League clubs... the Geordies landing no-one and us Mackems getting Bendtner."

BBC 5 live's Juliette Ferrington on Twitter: "Outside Stoke's training ground and the chief exec Tony Scholes has just told us Peter Crouch will be out in 15 minutes... but I'm about to have a word with him now."

0025: I should add Newcastle to the list of deadline-day losers for their failure to sign a striker, despite having a bid accepted for Bryan Ruiz.

JakeHaley21 on Twitter: "Some good signings for Newcastle. Looks like were going to have a good season."

Hmmm. I suspect Jake is being sarcastic here... or is he?

0022: STILL no confirmation from Stoke that they have signed Peter Crouch from Tottenham. Crouch was at the Britannia a few hours ago so don't think that deal is in danger, unless they couldn't find him a pen.

0018: DONE DEAL
They haven't stopped coming in yet, you know. Swansea have signed French defender Darnel Situ from Lens, subject to Premier League clearance. The 19-year-old has penned a two-year deal.

QPR's former Newcastle midfielder Joey Barton on Twitter: "Nice to see Mike Ashley and Derek Llambias come through with their promise to reinvest Andy Carroll money, £59m net profit from transfers in last 5 seasons... ambition???"

0012: So, safe to say Everton have had the worst transfer deadline day out of every top-flight club, and Tottenham also had a surprisingly disappointing time, despite getting Scott Parker of course. Bolton, Stoke, QPR, Aston Villa and Arsenal, yes, Arsenal have had some of the best. I'll add Fulham to that list after learning about Bryan Ruiz. Liverpool did well to get Craig Bellamy but they will miss Raul Meireles. Chelsea left it very late but emerge with one of the deals of the day there.

mandalinar on Twitter: "Glad thats over and Sunderland got a striker in the end. We've brought in a fair few players... Lets hope our performance improves."

Handshake
0005: DONE DEAL
Here's another move that was off earlier, but went through in the end. Possibly because Neil Warnock's move for Sebastien Bassong from Spurs fell through. Anyway, QPR have completed the signing of Sunderland defender Anton Ferdinand.

0004: I was going to wrap this text commentary up at midnight but we are still waiting on so many deals I am going to keep things going for a little while longer. Will you keep me company? Thanks, I knew you would... I'm Chris Bevan, and you can tweet me at @chrisbevan_bbc (using the hashtag #BBCFootball please). Or feel free to text me via 81111 (UK) instead.

Handshake
0002: DONE DEAL
I wrote this one off. I was wrong. Fulham have signed FC Twente striker Bryan Ruiz. That comes after late interest from Newcastle that saw the Magpies have a £12m bid accepted but fail to agree personal terms with the Costa Rican.

BBC radio 5 live senior football reporter Ian Dennis on Twitter: "Told the 40m package Tottenham rejected from Chelsea for Luka Modric was £30m plus Alex."

Handshake
2355: DONE DEAL
Here's a move that owes everything to Alan Tate's misfortune in a golf buggy a few days ago. Swansea have re-signed their former left-back Federico Bessone from Leeds on a two-year deal deal

Handshake
2352: DONE DEAL
As midnight approaches, news of deals is still coming through. Hull have signed Leicester striker Martyn Waghorn on loan until January.

Handshake
2350: DONE DEAL
Well, Fulham have signed a striker, just not the one we though they would. The Cottagers have confirmed the free transfer signing of former Porto striker Orlando Sa on a three-year deal.

Handshake
2346: DONE DEAL
Everton
have confirmed their signing of Real Madrid winger Royston Drenthe on a season-long loan. Not sure whether that will cheer up Toffees fans too much tonight?

2344: So, we know about Stuart Fleetwood but STILL no confirmation from Stoke about Peter Crouch, and I have no idea whether Bryan Ruiz joined Fulham in the end. That last one went awfully quiet in the last few hours so I am tempted to write it off. We already know Newcastle failed to sign him.

Handshake
2344: DONE DEAL
Luton
have announced their second signing of the night, Hereford striker Stuart Fleetwood arriving for an undisclosed fee.

Handshake
2343: DONE DEAL
Millwall
have signed Hull City striker Jay Simpson on loan until January. The 22-year-old had a loan spell at the New Den in 2007/08.

2342: I think I forgot to tell you this in all the excitement earlier: New Arsenal midfielder Mikel Arteta has signed a four-year deal at the Emirates.

BradleyHarrold on Twitter: "Well done Arsene Wenger leaves it to last minute but Mikel Arteta will replace Cesc and Yossi Benayoun good signing so happy."

nmistry95 on Twitter: "People are underestimating just how solid a signing Craig Bellamy is! top work there from King Kenny!"

taz_lfc on Twitter: "Devastated that Raul Meireles left LFC! Was instrumental in midfield last year and is a great loss to the team."

2338: Aston Villa boss Alex McLeish on his new signings: "Alan Hutton is an athletic full-back who has a lot of experience playing at a high level. Jermaine Jenas is a dynamic midfield player and I feel he will add quality to the squad."

Handshake
2336: DONE DEALS
Some late business in Scotland to update you on: Out-of-favour Celtic centre-half Jos Hooiveld has joined Southampton on loan, while Rangers have farmed out fringe midfielders John Fleck and Kyle Hutton to Sheffield United to gain regular first-team football. Aberdeen striker Michael Paton has joined Stockport County on loan in search of regular starts.

Handshake
2330: DONE DEAL
No news (yet) on Peter Crouch, but Stoke have confirmed the arrival of one striker. Cameron Jerome has signed a four-year deal after joining from Birmingham for an undisclosed fee. Potters boss Tony Pulis will definitely be hoping Jerome can continue the form he has shown when he has visited the Britannia Stadium with the Blues, because he has netted six times in his four appearances there.

Handshake
2330: DONE DEAL
Blackburn snap up highly-rated teenage striker Jordan Slew. The 18-year-old frontman will cost Rovers an initial £1m.

Chief football writer Phil McNulty on Twitter: "Everton have signed Argentine striker Denis Stracqualursi on season-long loan and Drenthe confirmation expected soon."

zippyatlarge on Twitter: "A disappointing day for Spurs. loads out and no defensive reinforcements in. Cahill should have been priority signing. No top 5 finish."

j__kent on Twitter: "Happy with Stoke's deals today. Good work by Tony Pulis. Hope the Crouch deal is confirmed soon so I can go to bed."

Handshake
2325: DONE DEALS
A double deal by Aston Villa to tell you about. They captured Tottenham midfielder Jermaine Jenas on a season-long loan and have also brought in his Spurs team-mate Alan Hutton in a permanent move, with the Scot signing until 2015.

Handshake
2323: DONE DEAL
Birmingham
have been busy tonight. They have also signed West Brom defender Pablo Ibanez for an undisclosed fee.

Handshake
2318: DONE DEAL
So, Sunderland keep Asamoah Gyan (or, as far as we know, they do) and bolster their attacking options by signing Arsenal striker Nicklas Bendtner on a season-long loan.

Handshake
2315: DONE DEAL
It was on , and then off. But finally on again. Arsenal have completed the signing of Everton midfielder Mikel Arteta for a fee in the region of £10m.

2313: The window has closed and boy did a few teams leave it late. Delighted with your team's last-gasp capture? Or distraught at seeing your best player leave. Do let me know, won't you? I'm Chris Bevan, and you can tweet me at @chrisbevan_bbc (using the hashtag #BBCFootball please). Or feel free to text me via 81111 (UK) instead.

Handshake
2312: DONE DEAL Yep, here is one of the day's BIG, last-ditch deals. Chelsea have confirmed that 28-year-old Portugal international Raul Meireles has joined the club from Liverpool on a four-year deal. The fee is believed to be in the region of £12m.

2310: Confirmed: Chelsea have signed Raul Meireles. And Arsenal have signed Mikel Arteta and let Nicklas Bendtner join Sunderland on loan. Phew.

Handshake
2309: DONE DEAL:
Birmingham
complete some last-minute business with the signing of midfielder Wade Elliott from Championship rivals Burnley.

Handshake
2308: DONE DEAL
Luton
have signed Trinidad & Tobago international forward Collin Samuel subject to international clearance. The 30-year-old was released by St Johnstone in May.

Handshake
2306: DONE DEAL
MK Dons
have beaten the deadline to sign Norwich City midfielder Anthony McNamee on a free transfer.

2305: I'll bring you news of Mikel Arteta, Raul Meireles and all the rest, when I get it. Meireles is the deal that intrigues me a the moment. There are reports Chelsea made a £15m for him tonight.

Ex-Gunners defender Martin Keown on Football Focus Special: "I think Arsenal's signings are a step in the right direction, but the club have done a lot of business in the period of a few days. Signings such as Mikel Arteta and Yossi Benayoun will help Arsenal improve but what will buy the manager time is a few good results. Time will tell if Arsene Wenger has made the right signings."

2301: But the transfer news will not stop for a good while yet. Time to find out who made it before the deadline, and who missed out...

Breaking news
2300: THE TRANSFER WINDOW IS NOW SHUT

In the pipeline
2258: IN THE PIPELINE
Something had to already be in place if Raul Meireles is going to join join Chelsea in the next 120 seconds. I suspect we won't find out until after the deadline has passed...

2256: Former Chelsea winger Shaun Wright-Phillips on leaving Manchester City and returning to west London with QPR: "I'm very excited to be here. It's a big club. I just want to get back playing football. I'd like to thank the managers of Bolton, Wigan and Stoke for showing an interest. In the end it was an easy decision to make. I'm looking to seeing my old mate Joey Barton, it should be a good laugh. The City fans have supported me for 10 years of my life. Neil Warnock has just told me to be energetic and create goals."

2255: Still no news on Peter Crouch. Or Cameron Jerome. I think we can assume Stoke have got their men, though.

Handshake
2253: DONE DEAL
Another signing in the bag for Arsene Wenger, as the Gunners snap up Yossi Benayoun on a season-long loan from Chelsea. Just Mikel Arteta to go now...

BBC Sport
Robbie Savage on Football Focus Special on Craig Bellamy re-joining Liverpool: "He will be a fantastic signing for Liverpool. Two years ago he was arguably the best player in the Premier League. I think that he will be an impact player, coming off the bench, playing on the right and the left."

2250: TEN MINUTES to go until the transfer window shuts. Still an awful lot of business to be wrapped up.

2249: BBC Radio 5 live senior football reporter's Ian Dennis has confirmed that Blackburn are trying to sign Sheffield United striker Jordan Slew.

Handshake
2245: DONE DEAL
Woah, the deals are starting to drop now. Liverpool have announced on their website that Wales international Craig Bellamy has re-signed for the club. The former Manchester City striker will wear the number 39 shirt.

From Ian in Runcorn, via text: "If Meireles wants out let him go, don't need bad energy in the dressing room, if Chelsea want him bad enough twist their arm for Sturridge in return I say."

2245: And Raul Meireles too, of course. Somebody get him a helicopter.

2244: OK, just 16 minutes left until the transfer window shuts. We await news of Mikel Arteta, Craig Bellamy and Peter Crouch, amongst others.

2242: News from Scotland, and it's got a hint of mystery about it. Rangers have rejected a late £9m offer for striker Nikica Jelavic after receiving a call from an agent who refused to say what club he was representing. It could have been anyone but let's rule Accrington Stanley out for starters.

Handshake
2238: DONE DEAL
Actually a Dann deal this one: Scott Dann in fact. The defender has signed a four-year deal with Blackburn after joining from Birmingham for an undisclosed fee.

Handshake
2237: DONE DEAL
Shaun Wright-Phillips completes his move move from Man City to QPR. Seb Bassong may have fallen through but Neil Warnock gets his man this time.

2235: So, Raul Meireles clearly wants that move to Chelsea. They have got 25 minutes to make his wish come true.

Yossi Benayoun on Twitter: "I sign with arsenal, very happy and excited about it, but now my head is only in the game against Greece on Friday, thanks for the support."

Breaking news

Bolton captain Kevin Davies tells BBC Sport's Alistair Magowan what he has been up to on transfer deadline day: "It's good to get away from the deadline day madness, we've been given some time off so I'm on holiday with my family in Spain. russhyde on Twitter: "I'm on the edge here waiting for Arteta or Benayoun deals to go through! Hurry hurry Wenger and Gazidis!"

CurtisDoyle on Twitter: "Stoke have done some seriously good business this transfer window "

*Note to Charlie Adam. Learn how to spell Craig Bellamy's name.

Stoke
have announced the capture of midfielder Wilson Palacios from Tottenham, on a four-year deal and for an undisclosed fee believed to be around £6m. Expect Peter Crouch to wrap up his own move from White Hart Lane to the Britannia Stadium in the next few minutes.

2208: Bolton manager Owen Coyle has told BBC Sport's Paul Plunkett he is very happy with how the transfer window has panned out, after signing David Ngog and Gael Kakuta, while managing to keep Gary Cahill despite considerable interest from elsewhere. Not surprised he is happy about that - Cahill looked almost certain to go at one stage.

BBC Sport's Paul Fletcher Brighton will not be signing former Valencia winger Vicente before the transfer window closes. But I understand that talks will continue on Thursday and with the 30-year-old being a free agent, he would still be able to sign for the high-flying Seagulls.

BBC radio 5 live senior football reporter Ian Dennis on Twitter: "Alan Pardew must be tearing his hair out. Lost out on Bryan Ruiz and no incomings now expected at Newcastle."

2206: Any of you wondering what is happening with Bryan Ruiz? BBC Sport's Saj Chowdhury reports that Newcastle had a £12m bid for the FC Twente striker accepted, but the move broke down over the Costa Rican's personal terms. The Magpies will not be doing any more transfer business in this window... so, over to you Fulham.

2202: So inside one hour left and lots of potential transfers remain up in the air. Mikel Arteta's move from Everton to Arsenal looks set to go down to the wire, while the Gunners are also keen to sign Yossi Benayoun. Peter Crouch and Wilson Palacios are at Stoke but they have yet to sign for the Potters, while another two Tottenham players - Jermaine Jenas and Alan Hutton - are waiting to complete their respective moves to Aston Villa. Craig Bellamy is hotly tipped to re-join Liverpool, while the likes of Shaun Wright-Phillips, Yakubu, Scott Dann and FC Twente striker Bryan Ruiz could also be on the move. Down in the Championship, Brighton have yet to complete their stunning signing of Spanish winger Vicente. Told you there was a lot still to be sorted out...

2200: Tottenham boss Harry Redknapp is (probably) in bed, his deals are (probably) all done. Don't even think about calling it a night yourselves though. There is just ONE HOUR left until the transfer window shuts and A LOT left to be resolved. There might even be more happening that we don't even know about yet...

2143: By the way, the resurrection of Mikel Arteta's move to Arsenal does not mean the Gunners will forget about Yossi Benayoun. BBC Sport's David Ornstein says Arsene Wenger is still looking to wrap up a deal for the Chelsea midfielder tonight.

Chief football writer Phil McNulty on Twitter: "Arteta is bitter blow for Everton. Thought they had seen off Arsenal two hours ago only for Arteta himself to force the issue."

2137: Mikel Arteta also told me (a fortnight ago): "I am happy here, I always have been. I want to aim to win trophies, play in the Champions League and keep doing better and better." I guess moving to Arsenal takes care of the Champions League part of those ambitions, doesn't it?

SportsAntidote on Twitter: "Why has a big club has not chased Arteta sooner? Barring the odd injury, he's been class season after season."

2032: RUMOUR MILL
Tim Cahill to Stoke? Now that's the kind of surprise deal I was talking about. Everton fans might be in for a long couple of hours though...

BBC 5 live's Juliette Ferrington on Twitter: "I have it on good authority that Stoke City had an offer turned down for Adam Johnson but are in for Everton's Tim Cahill."

In the pipeline
2029: I can confirm Newcastle United HAVE made a bid for FC Twente Bryan Ruiz, and are waiting to hear back from the Dutch club. I would imagine Fulham will be quite interested to see where that one goes...

2028: Don't know much about Royston Drenthe? He is a 24-year-old Dutch left-winger, known for his pace. He is about to move to Goodison Park on a one-year loan deal from Real Madrid.

BBC sports news correspondent Dan Roan on Twitter: "Everton on verge of signing Royston Drenthe, who has arrived at Goodison."

From Mick T, via text: "Re 2003. Adam Johnson is a player I admire and have always wanted him at Arsenal , but it wont sort out our problems in the centre of the park. Come on Arsene, we need a top notch midfielder."

2023: Less than three hours until the transfer window closes. So, what are the big ones that have happened so far? Well, we're probably looking at Manchester City signing Owen Hargreaves, Scott Parker joining Tottenham, Joe Cole moving to Lille from Liverpool and Andre Santos signing for Arsenal from Fenerbahce, while Per Mertesacker's move to the Gunners is all but done. Deals that we are still waiting to happen - Peter Crouch is apparently at Stoke for a medical, while Spain winger Vicente is in talks with Brighton and Alan Hutton and Jermaine Jenas are at Aston Villa having their medical. Then there is Costa Rican Bryan Ruiz, who has been linked with Fulham, but Newcastle are also apparently making a late move for the FC Twente forward. Mikel Arteta's move from Everton to Arsenal has broken down. Ice cold? Wesley Sneijder joining Manchester United, Carlos Tevez joining anyone and Luka Modric leaving Spurs. Still plenty of time for all of this to change and surely there is a surprise in store for us all too? Surely!?

Bolton have completed the signing of Liverpool's French striker David Ngog. There was talk of a £4m fee for the 22-year-old earlier today but I will firm that up for you when I can.

BBC sports news correspondent Dan Roan on Twitter: "(Very) Senior source at Stoke denies interest in Adam Johnson - (could be lying) but there it is."

M4rkieT on Twitter: "Same old Newcastle, all summer to buy a centre forward then on the eve of the window closing, off we go panic buying."

2014: So, Newcastle fans. Do you think the Magpies are really trying to sign a striker tonight or, like IamShaunWood, do you think it is all a Ruiz by Mike Ashley. (Sorry about that)

1948: I like the sound of Van Aanholt, especially the bit about him using his "intensity to defend very effectively". A deep thinker?

1947: I've got a little more reaction to Wigan's capture of Chelsea defender Patrick van Aanholt on loan. "Patrick is a player with enormous potential," said Latics boss Roberto Martinez. Preston general manager and secretary Ben Rhodes tells BBC Sport's Paul Fletcher more about their arrival of Jamaica winger Keammar Daley: "We have just got international clearance for Keammar, which means he is now a Preston player. Securing it is a long process and you have to jump through hoops to get a work permit. There is an online form to complete, then you have to apply for a certificate of sponsorship. After that you have to input all the details into Fifa's transfer matching system. The other club also does this and all the details go to the relevant FA's in both countries. If all the details match up then you are issued with an international transfer certificate (cue all-round relief). There will not be any more deals involving PNE."

Norwich City have released midfielder Stephen Hughes by mutual consent. The 28-year-old made two Canaries appearances last season, and was loaned out to MK Dons.

It's interesting; it's the clubs who got hammered at the weekend who are making big changes. Tottenham boss Harry Redknapp will make a change, he's not happy with the squad, and it will have a different complexion by the end of the day."

From G in Putney, via text: "Just had a call off my mate who works in the kitchen at the Emirates and he has just seen Blackburn's giant defender Chris Samba arrive!"

Samba has arrived in the kitchen? Interesting. I thought Arsenal needed new players, not a new chef.

1920: Hmmm. Looks like transfer deadline day has just got a whole lot better for Everton fans, hasn't it? But Arsenal's hunt for a midfielder goes on... Maybe Yossi Benayoun should keep his phone switched on for the next hour or two...

With a club like ours loans are really important - you get two Premier League slots, we've used one, we could use one later today, or in January. We may use that before 11pm. I might have believed this tweet if it hadn't started with 'not made up'. Next you will be telling me the delay in the Bellamy-Liverpool move is because he went home to get his golf clubs first...

1903: It's all gone a little bit quiet on Craig Bellamy's move to Liverpool (or anywhere). News on that when I get any. QPR probably haven't given up on him either. The way Neil Warnock is going, he will be trying to sign you and me tonight too.

1902: Football Focus Special has just finished, but it will be back, at 2230 BST to be precise. Give this page a manual refresh to get rid of the blank window for now though.

Since I've been doing this job we've changed leagues nearly every year, apart from last year where we stayed up. We tend to run with two lists and try to plan ahead. Of course, the one thing you can't plan for is injuries, or people coming in for your better players, instead you tend to work on weaknesses in your squad. The window comes into the season. The Football League has been back three weeks now, really you don't want to be talking about player movement at this stage, it's a distraction for managers. You can get injuries, you start panicking, spend money on a player who's not worth it. I don't think the managers leave it late, they know who they want from the start. I think the chief executives at clubs want to leave it to the last minute, and think if they use some brinkmanship they'll get a knock down price. But that can fall through and you end up with second choice."

1639: DONE DEAL Fulham have completed the signing of 31-year-old Juventus defender Zdenek Grygera on a one-year deal, with the option of a further year. The Czech Republic international joins on a free transfer after his contract with Juventus was terminated by mutual consent on Tuesday.

1639: Into League One now. Bournemouth chairman Eddie Mitchell has told BBC Radio Solent that it is now "unlikely" there will be any movement in or out at Dean Court. Millwall had made a bid for Liam Feeney, while the Cherries were hoping to sign a striker but both moves have broken down.

1638: BBC 5 Live's Mike Sewell: In addition to Gilles Sunu joining Lorient on a permanent deal, fellow Arsenal striker Joel Campbell could also be heading to the French club on loan. The Costa Rican joined the Gunners on a permanent deal from Deportivo Saprissa less than two weeks ago.

1633: DONE DEAL West Ham have agreed the signing of Arsenal midfielder Henri Lansbury on an initial season-long loan. He will be filling Scott Parker's shoes... happy with that, Hammers fans?

1631: Plenty of rumours surrounding Chelsea winger Florent Malouda today, linking him with Arsenal, amongst others. But the French international has made it clear he has no intention of leaving the London club. "I've still got two years left on my Chelsea contract," he said. "My objective is to extend by one year until the 2014 World Cup." Malouda is currently in Albania on international duty with France.

Chief football writer Phil McNulty on Twitter: "So in Craig Bellamy's rush to the tape Liverpool just lead QPR - but might still need to be referred back to Manchester City."

1625: Some transfer news from Russia now, with big-spending FC Anzhi Makhachkala announcing their latest signing following the arrivals of Samuel Eto'o from Inter Milan and Yuri Zhirkov from Chelsea earlier this summer. Goalkeeper Vladimir Gabulov has signed a five-year deal contract after joining from Dynamo Moscow BUT he has been loaned to CSKA Moscow for six months as a replacement for Russia's first-choice goalkeeper Igor Akinfeev, who is sidelined by a cruciate ligament injury he sustained on Sunday.

1622: DONE DEAL Manchester City striker John Guidetti has completed a loan move to Feyenoord for the rest of the season. The 19-year-old Sweden Under-21 international initially looked set to leave City permanently this summer but instead signed a new three-year deal.

1616: News from League Two now. BBC Wiltshire understands that Swindon are trying to tie up a loan move for 19-year-old West Ham forward Ahmed Abdulla until January and off-load at least one of their first-team players.

1613: Speaking of Lorient, and not Leyton Orient, the French side have signed Arsenal forward Gilles Sunu. The 20-year-old, who joined the Gunners at the age of 15 but never played a Premier League game for the club, had been on loan there last season and has now signed a four-year deal.

1612: Not quite a done deal yet, but almost. Arsenal have confirmed they are to sign Werder Bremen defender Per Mertesacker "subject to the completion of formal registration processes".

1610: Remember that great transfer deadline day in August 2006, when West Ham stunned us all by swooping for Carlos Tevez and Javier Mascherano? Yes, me too. Could the Hammers' east London neighbours Leyton Orient be about to emulate them with a swoop for two South Americans superstars in the making, as has been reported this week? Er, no. The O's have denied all knowledge of Linhares' Brazilian teenagers Roger and Mayrinik... And suggest they might have actually signed for French side Lorient instead. An easy mistake to make. The O's ARE in the market for a winger, but are waiting until the loan window opens next week.

1605: Speaking of Harry Redknapp, here's some Tottenham news... no-one other than Scott Parker arriving yet though, but the clear-out could be continuing. Occasional England midfielder Jermaine Jenas looks set to join Aston Villa on loan, and Alan Hutton remains on course to join him at Villa Park, although Fulham are keen on the Scotland full-back too.

1602: I have two requests for you: Firstly, give this page a manual refresh so you can see who is talking to you now Sam has gone home for a well-earned rest. And, secondly, get involved. Lots of deals still to be done, and lots of chat needed from you lot. I'm Chris Bevan, and you can tweet me at @chrisbevan_bbc (using the hashtag #BBCFootball please). Or feel free to text me via 81111 (UK) instead.

1600: Hello, it's starting to liven up around here isn't it? And Harry Redknapp hasn't even got (properly) involved yet, apart from signing Scott Parker. There are only SEVEN HOURS left until the transfer window shuts... This is where transfer deadline day REALLY gets interesting. Hopefully.

With more than eight and a half hours to go until the transfer window shuts, still plenty of room for manoeuvre on this greatest of great days. Arsenal have yet to confirm deals for Per Mertesaker, Andre Santos and Park Chu-young, Tottenham will wrap up their move for Scott Parker (at least), Shaun Wright-Phillips looks set for QPR - while deals involving Craig Bellamy, Cameron Jerome, Anton Ferdinand and Scott Dann remain on the cards. After £225m was spent in January, we have already seen nearly £400m spent this summer, and some big deals could yet go through before the end of play today. BBC Sport's David Ornstein on Twitter: "Joe Cole's camp tell me he's in Lille having medical + move there likely - but not done deal, could yet opt for a Premier League club."

BBC Radio 5 Live
1039: Update now from BBC 5 Live's senior football reporter Ian Dennis: "Owen Hargreaves has passed the medical at Manchester City it's just a question of personal terms, I expect that to be completed by early afternoon. The Scott Parker to Tottenham deal should go through, I think they're still waiting on Palacios deal to go through. I don't know what's holding that up. markdumpleton on Twitter: "Multiple reports of Yakubu being seen in/around Carrow Road, possible late Canaries deal today it seems!"

0957: Plenty of expectation around that Owen Hargreaves will be completing a move to Manchester City today. Who saw that coming? I tell you one person who didn't - City and England keeper Joe Hart. Our chief football writer Phil McNulty reports: "Joe Hart's measured reaction to Owen Hargreaves' move to join him at Man City: "Pardon? Is he? Wowzers. Where's that come from? Really?" 'Wowzers'. Can't believe Hart is stealing my phrases.

SoccerDotTel on Twitter: "The funny thing about Benayoun is, with so much interest in him doesn't that show that he's worth keeping?"

0950: And the Stoke news doesn't stop there... a deal for Wilson Palacios is very close, with a fee having been agreed with Spurs, personal terms agreed and the player has passed his medical. The transfer has stalled, however, because Tottenham are waiting to see who they get in. As for Peter Crouch - the Potters have held talks with Tottenham and still have an interest in the player, but they have got no further forward than that.

0947: Something a bit more tangible now, though, from Stoke, who have confirmed to BBC Sport's Simon Austin that Arsenal striker Nicklas Bendtner's father and agent is indeed at the club having talks. The club have denied, however, that they have bid for Cameron Jerome - insisting no contact has been made with either the striker of Birmingham regarding his signature.

Plenty of time, then, for you lot to get involved. Tweet the commentary via #BBCFootball, tweet me @sampatricklyon or text in via 81111 (UK). This is your time to shine.

0928: Celtic chief executive Peter Lawell has been talking on his way into business this morning - and confirmed that Shaun Maloney is indeed on his way to Wigan. He denied, however, that anything is happening with Liam Ridgewell.

One man I've yet to mention today - Yossi Benayoun. The Israel midfielder Tweeted last night that he was due in London to sort out a transfer away from Chelsea, with Arsenal, Liverpool and Tottenham all reported to be in for him.

Steve_Hibees on Twitter: "My mate's neighbour has just spotted ex-Hearts star Christian Nade flying into Glasgow Airport to sign for Rangers."

Luke, Swansea via text: "Booked the day off for Transfer deadline day, but the missus wants to do something, is it too late to release her on a free or place her on the transfer list? Willing to listen to offers."

0917: And what about Manchester United, huh? Sources at the top level at Old Trafford have hinted their business for this window has long since been completed - but who would bet against them making a last-ditch bid for someone? There is money to spend there, you would think. Wesley Sneijder? One man looking likely to leave the club, meanwhile, is Federico Macheda. Newcastle are thought to be in for him.

BBC Sport's David Ornstein on Twitter: "West Brom tell me one (probably Marek Cech) or two leaving to enable late move for new defender. Also not best pleased re: Owen Hargreaves, who they hoped to sign."

0911: Birmingham news courtesy of BBC Sport's Alistair Magowan - bosh. "A source close to Birmingham City says the club is yet to receive bids for Scott Dann and Cameron Jerome despite reported interest from Blackburn and Stoke respectively, but there are indications they may come during the day. And although Liam Ridgewell had a transfer request rejected on Tuesday, there might also be developments on that front. Celtic are one of the clubs linked with Ridgewell."

0855: DONE DEALS In case you missed them, by the way, a few deals were wrapped up late last night. Liverpool completed the signing of Uruguay International Sebastian Coates, Swansea City brought in German keeper Gerhard Tremmel and Cardiff City boss Malky Mackay said he is "ongoing with things" as he looks to bring Ben Turner to the club from Coventry City.

AJEverton001 on Twitter: "Really surprised no one's come in for Anelka. Chelsea don't need him - they've got Mata, Drogba, Torres, Lakaku."

cafcbrad on Twitter: "Dann to Blackburn from under Stoke's noses."

0848: Of course, though, if you have any actual news, make sure you let me know about it as well. Perhaps starts your Tweets or Texts with the word "GENUINE"? Or, "I HAVEN'T JUST MADE THIS UP, HONEST". The latter might eat up too many characters, mind.

0846: I blooming love transfer deadline day, me. What I really, really love, is spurious Tweets and Texts like your mum's sister's best mate's dog walker who claims to have just seen the back of Zinedine Zidane's head outside the City Ground in Nottingham. Bootiful.

jwinchester25 on Twitter: "My mate at the Gatwick has just seen Giuseppe Rossi walking through arrivals - Spurs bound?"

And plenty, too, to stay across in Scotland. Steven Davis could be about to leave Ibrox - possibly for Aston Villa - Leicester are pondering a new bid for Rangers' Nikica Jelavic and Celtic are eyeing bids for Nicky Shorey and Liam Ridgewell.

0835: IN THE PIPELINE

A few more to keep an eye out for today, then. David Ngog to leave Liverpool, Sunderland, Stoke and QPR to battle it out for Peter Crouch, Tottenham to make a move for Gary Cahill, Wigan to move for Shaun Maloney, Brian Ruiz and Zdenek Grygera to arrive at Fulham and movement at Everton, too. Though probably through the exit rather than the entrance. Joseph Yobo and Yakubu are close to leaving, it is reported.

SJG_23 on Twitter: "Papiss Demba Cisse spotted arriving via someone's fancy car at Sunderland training ground."

Matt, Shipley via text: "Just seen Wayne Bridge at Leeds train station. Doubt he's going to Elland Road so must be en route to elsewhere."

JacksterCFC on Twitter: "Just seen Alvaro Perreira at Heathrow Airport. On the way to Stamford Bridge?"

0830: IN THE PIPELINE

Now then, who could be going where today then? Well it would appear Arsenal will tie up deals for Per Mertesaker, Andre Santos and Park Chu-young, Tottenham will wrap up their move for Scott Parker (at least), Shaun Wright-Phillips will join QPR, Joe Cole will switch to French side Lille, Aston Villa are in for Spurs full-back Alan Hutton, and arguably the most surprising of summer transfers - Manchester City will sign Owen Hargreaves on a free transfer. And that barely even scratches the surface.

0827: By the way - you want to give this page an extremely cheeky manual refresh now, whereupon you will find a magnificent set of videos at the top of this here page. Love it.

Chief football writer Phil McNulty on Twitter: "Spurs chairman Levy said from day one Modric would not be sold to Chelsea & has held his nerve. And for that plenty should admire him."

Steve, Edinburgh via text: "Never mind Hibs doing any transfer business, how about a new manager."

Breaking news
0822: And don't go thinking that just because there are still 14 hours and 40 minutes until the transfer window shuts that I don't already have actual, real-life, tangible news. Oh no. Usually ridiculously shy with the press, Tottenham manager Harry Redknapp has broken his vow of silence to update us all on the Luka Modric situation. Linked all summer with a move to Chelsea, Modric - Redknapp insists - is going absolutely nowhere. Are you 100% sure, Redknapp is asked? "1,000,000% sure. He's staying."

mike__richards on Twitter: "Just seen Mauro Zarate at a car rental's in the John Lennon International airport."

0818: I trust you are all abreast of the latest transfer news and nonsense? If not, our gossip column is always the best place to start. Marek Hamsik to Arsenal? Spurs and Fulham battling it out for Sulley Muntari? Liverpool target Niko Kranjcar and Vedran Corluka? Chelsea to sign Alvaro Pereira? Ooh I tell you, there's more snatched whispers and gossip about than at an octogenarians' knitting circle.

HeRaySingh on Twitter: "The most important day of Arsenals season."

Tom, Newcastle fan, Cambridge via text: "Desperate for a new striker. No more goalkeepers please."

NickMotown on Twitter: "I hope Health & Safety have equipped you with the requisite 16 gallons of coffee & triple strength fingertip pads."

0814: But before we dip our toe into the warm waters of the day's happenings, here's how you lot can get in touch today. Tweet the commentary via #BBCFootball, Tweet me @sampatricklyon or text in via 81111 (UK) - and let's get this bad boy cooking, yeah?

0811: And north of the border, almost literally anything could happen. On a transfer front anyway. Celtic, Rangers, Hearts, Hibernian... you name them - when they move, we move.

0809: Just think about it. You would have to think that Arsenal have business to do, that Manchester City will be in the mix, that Chelsea, Liverpool and Newcastle have money to spend, that QPR will continue their push to be the window's biggest movers and shakers, and that Everton might actually, you never know, shock us all and actually spend some real money. Or get a loan in, maybe. And, of course, transfer deadline day without some wheeling and dealing in Tottenham would be like a fish without a bicycle. Nonsensical.

0807: You lot know the score, right? Basically, English and Scottish clubs have until 2300 BST to complete any last-minute signings, at which time the transfer window slams shut and managers up and down the country will have to make do with what they're left with. And believe me, oodles of dealings could yet go through. Oodles.

0804: Well let me tell you this, your pulse is going to peak and trough like never before today, the greatest of all days for gossip, rumour and breaking news enthusiasts. Oh ho ho yes, it's Transfer Deadline Day and, good people of the BBC live text commentary, things are going to get hotter than a firecracker lit at both ends.

0800: Oh hello. Top of the morning to ya. How's the heart rate?
