Use the Pen Tool and start tracing the basic features of the girl. While you are tracing, there are couple shortcut keys you should know in order to work more faster.

These shortcuts are:

  • Ctrl+[ = Send Backward (This will send object back 1 step)
  • Ctrl+] = Bring Forward (This will bring object front 1 step)
  • Ctrl+Shift+[ = Send to Back (This will send object all the way to the back)
  • Ctrl+Shift+] = Bring to Front (This will bring object all the way to the front)
  • Ctrl+F = Paste in Front (This will paste object in front with same position)

basic outlines

3. Make shadow

Draw a new path as shown (top). Then Copy the base path of the face and Paste in Front. Select the copied base path and the new path, open your Pathfinder, Alt-click on Intersect shape areas.

intersect

Use the same technique from previous step and make all shadow paths for the overall illustration. You don’t have to get into the details yet, one simple shadow path of each part is good enough (ie. eye, lips, shirt, body, etc). Remember to use Ctrl+C for copy; and Ctrl+F to paste object in front. Trust me, this will save you a lot of time!

shadow paths

4. Fill in base color

Now fill in the base color for the face, eye, lips, and eyebrow.

base color

5. Shadow gradient

Fill the shadow path of the face with a Gradient (white-skin tone) and select Multiply for Blending Mode.

multiply

Select the other shadow paths and use the Eyedropper Tool to copy the gradient fill of the main shadow path.

eyedropper

For the lip and eye shadow, use the Eyedropper to copy the base fill and select Multiply Blending Mode.

6. Body

Use the same technique, copy the gradient fill for the body. Note you might to adjust the gradient of each shadow path to blend in with the overall illustration.

7. Hair

Pretty much the same, fill 1 path with the gradient, then use the Eyedropper Tool to copy the fill.

hair

8. Shirt

Same technique as the previous steps.

You must get the same result as the next one:

Create Love Wallpaper for the desktop in Photoshop CS3

Create a new layer under the heart’s one and represent on it black drops and sparks, using the usual Brush Tool (B). The brushes may be found in the Internet and they have the next titles: Evil_Blood_Splat and Blood_Splatter_Brushes_By_Vexing_Art.

Create Love Wallpaper for the desktop in Photoshop CS3

Create immediately one more new layer and use a brush from those earlier applied that has the name Blood_Splatter2, and represent a blot of black color on the heart.

Create Love Wallpaper for the desktop in Photoshop CS3

It should become of blood’s color, which is why we’ll set the parameters on the layers’ palette as it is shown in the next table:

Create Love Wallpaper for the desktop in Photoshop CS3

We should represent on this heart several more patches, using the brush finger prints brushes by hawksmont that may be downloaded in Internet too.

Create Love Wallpaper for the desktop in Photoshop CS3

Set the parameters for the layers’ palette as it is indicated below:

Select the separate layer containing the shadow and apply the Eraser Tool (E) to erase the upper edges and the lateral shadow’s parts.

Create Love Wallpaper for the desktop in Photoshop CS3

Create again a new layer and use on it the Polygonal Lasso Tool (L) to represent a marking, looking like a stripe created when tearing off the sticky band and then select the Burn Tool (O) to paint the marking with the color #999999

Create Love Wallpaper for the desktop in Photoshop CS3

Apply for this layer the Blending Options>Drop Shadow.

Create Love Wallpaper for the desktop in Photoshop CS3

Apply the layers’ parameters for the layer in case:

Create Love Wallpaper for the desktop in Photoshop CS3

We should get the same result as this one:

Create Love Wallpaper for the desktop in Photoshop CS3

We should make the sticky band look more visible, that is why we’ll create a new layer and place it under the band’s layer. Make several clicks with the brush (Opacity – 10%) to get the same result like this one from next image:

Create Love Wallpaper for the desktop in Photoshop CS3

Make a copy of the sticky band’s layer and turn it over together with the shadow’s layer, placing them on the opposite side.

Create Love Wallpaper for the desktop in Photoshop CS3

Next step includes writing the corresponding text on the band:

Create Love Wallpaper for the desktop in Photoshop CS3

The text’s parameters are included in this table:

Create Love Wallpaper for the desktop in Photoshop CS3

Next we have to create one more new layer and mark it out both with the text’s layer. Press after that on the next combination of buttons: Ctrl+E, for the layers to stick together. Choose now the Eraser Tool (E) with the Opacity of 10% and erase the new image as it is demonstrated below:

The example below shows live, editable type using an image as an opacity mask.

And there are many other applications for this technique, which you can (presumably) think up for yourself. We’ll first take a look at basic methods for creating and working with opacity masks, then examine the process of using an image in an opacity mask.

Object masks
For lack of a better phrase, we’ll use “object mask” to describe any type of opacity mask based on a vector object rather than an image. The reason I separate the two types is that there’s a necessary and slightly different process for creating masks based on raster images. Object masks are much more straightforward.

To begin, create a text object. (For my example, I’ll be using a surf theme, so I’ll simply use the word “Surf.”)

Now open up the Transparency palette. Choose the flyaway menu on the right, and select the “Make Opacity Mask” option.

Instantly your text will disappear. To make it reappear, deselect the “Clip” checkbox in the Transparency palette.

Now click on the opacity mask that you’ve created in order to select it.

Notice what happens in your Layers palette?

You’ve entered into a sort of nested layer system in Illustrator in which any object you create becomes a sub-layer of your text object. You can’t select any object that’s currently in your document. You can only select and create objects within this special opacity mask layer.

So now pick a drawing tool. I’ll use the rectangle tool and draw a box around my text object, which happens to have the same fill color as my text.

And then I’ll apply a gradient swatch to that box. The gradient I chose, seen below in the Layers palette and the Transparency palette, has a white center, fading out to black. Because Illustrator uses the luminance values of objects in the opacity mask, this means that my text fades from full opaque to fully transparent from the center.

Now I can continue to add objects to my mask, if desired, or modify my current object. In my case, I’ll convert the radial gradient to a linear gradient. ANd I’ll adjust the brightness value of the black to make it a dark gray so that the text doesn’t disappear completely.

Then, in the Transparency palette I’ll once again select the main object so that I can manipulate the object rather than the mask. I’ll drag it on top of an image in my composition, and voila! I now have live, editable text with a gradient mask.

Image masks
But what if, instead of compositing my transparent text over an object, I want to composite the image within my text and use the image’s luminance values to define my text’s transparency? Not a problem.

Just to make things easier for yourself, begin by positioning your text over the image you wish to use for the image mask.

Then select your image, and copy it. (You can also cut it, if you don’t plan to use the image elsewhere in your composition.)
Select your text object once again, and, if you haven’t already, create a new opacity mask for it, just as before.

Then select the opacity mask, and choose Edit > Paste in Front (Command-F on the Mac/Control-F on Windows) to paste it in place so that it doesn’t get lost on your canvas. Move the image around to make it fit better into your text, and, once again, voila!

Miscellaneous tips
Here are some final tips to help you work with opacity masks.

1. If you’re effect looks inverted–if, say, you have the masked object on top of a light background, you can select the “Invert Mask” option in the transparency palette, which will flip around the luminance values of your opacity mask.

2. If it still doesn’t look quite right, you can continue to make adjustments to the image in the mask. One way would be to select the mask, and adjust its transparency in the Transparency palette. Reducing the mask object’s opacity value will make the text less transparent, which can help in certain circumstances. (Note: If you have multiple objects within your opacity mask, you can select individual objects to adjust their transparency values.)

Similarly, you could also apply an Adjust Colors filter to the mask image to adjust individual color channels, accentuating and deemphasizing portions of the image as you see fit.

3. If you wish, you can use the “Clip” option in the Transparency palette, which will cut off (or “clip”) your object outside the bounds of your opacity mask object(s).

4. Finally, you can also disable and delete opacity masks. To disable them, simply choose “Disable Opacity Mask” from the flyaway menu in the Transparency palette. To delete the mask and its contents, select the opacity mask in the Transparency palette, then select and delete the objects within the mask. After this, choose the flyaway menu in the Transparency palette, and select “Release Opacity Mask.”

Alternately, if you wish to keep the contents of the opacity mask but not use them in an opacity mask, simply release the mask without deleting the objects.
