February Meeting: Auctions and Appraisals

The February Meeting of the ASA Northern NJ Chapter will be held on Thursday, February 20, 2014 at 6:00 pm at Maggiano’s, 70 Riverside Square Mall, Hackensack, NJ 07601 (Phone: 201-221-2040) [Map]. The Executive Meeting is scheduled for 6:00 pm followed by Dinner at 7:00. The guest speaker is Mitchell Caspert, Esq., a principal of Caspert Auctioneers & Appraisers in Englewood Cliffs, NJ. Mr. Caspert will discuss “Overcoming Your Seller's Bloated Expectations.”

Mitchell Caspert, who took his B.S. at Syracuse University and his J.D. at the Thomas Jefferson School of Law. enjoyed a 20-year career supervising the administration of attorneys and legal professionals at two prominent New York City law firms. After 9/11. he returned to the family business, while maintaining his interest in the law and technology.

Mr. Caspert has lectured attorneys about technology, and has moderated Ask A Lawyer, a weekly metro area television program. A popular speaker at financial seminars, trade groups and professional associations, he is an expert on the auction & appraisal business.

The program qualifies for two hours of ASA Continuing Education Credit. Dinner is $30 per person for members when paid in advance by PayPal or check; $35 for guests and for members paying at the door. The Real Estate Market: Outlook and Trends

The ASA Southern New Jersey and Princeton Chapters will meet jointly together with NAIFA (National Association of Insurance and Financial Advisors) members on Wednesday, February 26, 2014 at Mastoris Restaurant, 144 Route 130 at Route 206, Bordentown, NJ 08505 (Phone: 609-298-4650) [Map]. The Guest Speaker will be Susan M. Smith, MAI, Editor-in-Chief, the Real Estate Business Advisory Services Group at PricewaterhouseCoopers. She will discuss “Recent Trends in and the Outlook for the Real Estate Market in 2014.” Ms. Smith will share her findings on the commercial and industrial real estate market in the past year.

SAVE THE DATE: 2014 Business Valuation Seminar

The Philadelphia Chapter of the American Society of Appraisers (ASA) will hold its annual Business Valuation Seminar at the Doubletree Guest Suites Hotel in Plymouth Meeting, PA on Friday, May 2, 2014.  The program includes sessions focused on

  • Commercial Reasonableness in Exempt Hospital Transactions
  • Valuation and Investing in the Face of Uncertainty
  • Cost of Capital using Duff & Phelps given Morningstar’s Exit
  • Tax Perspectives and Fair Market Value.

2013BVSeminarFees. Early Bird fees, which apply when registration forms and payments are submitted by March 28, are $290 for ASA Members, $320 for all others. After March 28, registration is $320 for ASA Members, $350 for all others. The fee includes meals and refreshments.

Credit. The program qualifies for eight hours of Continuing Education Credit (CEC) for ASA members and for members of other professional organizations which recognize NASBA credit.

January Meeting: Appraisal Review for Fraud

The January Chapter Meeting will be held on Thursday, January 17, 2013 at 6:00 pm  at Pal's Cabin in West Orange, NJ. The Executive Meeting is scheduled for 6:00 pm followed by Dinner at 7:00. The guest speaker is Gary Snowdon, ASA, Principal Appraiser at the Albany, NY firm of Snowdon Valuation, who will talk about “The Good, the Bad, and the Ugly: Appraisal Review for Fraud.”

Gary Snowdon, who received his B.A. in Education from William Paterson University and earned a Graduate Certificate in Public Management from Rockefeller College, SUNY Albany, has over 20 years experience appraising commercial and industrial real estate.  He specializes in complex commercial, industrial, and vacant land appraisals in the Hudson Valley, Capital, Saratoga, and Adirondack regions for finance, litigation support, estates, eminent domain, conservation, and other purposes.

Mr. Snowdon has served as an Appraisal Consultant to the NYS Department of Transportation and as a Regional Advisor to the NYS Secretary of State.  A NYS Certified Appraisal Instructor, he has developed and taught courses and seminars for ASA, the National Association of Independent Fee Appraisers and the Appraisal Institute. He has also contributed to books and journals on real estate topics and writes The Snowdon Report.

The program qualifies for one hour of ASA Continuing Education Credit. Dinner is $30 person.
