Have no fear, superheroes are here....and the Summer Games

Camp is truly flying by, so quickly, in fact, that we can't even keep up with the blog!  So, here's a glance at the last 2 weeks of camp!

On Tuesday of superhero week, campers dressed up like their favorite superhero...

Or their homemade creation!  CIT, "Casper," shows off his superhero attire!

The highlight of the week was definitely the Camp field trip to see the Winston-Salem Dash!  Campers had a blast cheering the Dash onto victory and watching themselves on the jumbotron!

Sadie was lucky enough to win a Dash t-shirt and get Bolt's autograph!

Mufasa cheers on the home team!

Counselors in Training took a special field trip to Skateland in Clemmons!

During Week 8, we challenged the campers at the Wilkes YMCA to our annual field day event!

Campers participated in tug-of-war...

Counselors and Camp Leaders helped lead us to victory by participating in a baby food eating contest.  They had to eat it all and keep it down to earn bonus points!

Mufasa takes a whipped cream pie to the face to earn more bonus points!

Strawberry and Devin pose for a messy picture!

On Wacky Wednesday, counselors sported their finest bedsheet togas in honor of our Olympic themed week.
Strawberry and Monkey model the latest toga fashions!

Next week we will be time traveling and creating a time capsule to share this year's camp with campers in years to come!

Wet, Wild, and Wacky and Lazy 5 Ranch

Water balloons, sponges, and squirt guns galore!  We had a wild and wacky week in the water!

During opening assembly, members from each huddle group had to compete to transfer the most water balloons from one bucket to another, while holding the balloons with their backs!  Some of them got a little wet in the process!

Jared took a backward dive down the camp Slip-n-Slide!

Campers formed a Conga Line and danced their way through assembly!

After making sun visors during craft time, campers show off their creativity!

During clinic, Brady and Amanda worked on their water gun aim as they shot goldfish out of the "pond."

Our trip to Lazy 5 Ranch was a blast!  We fed all the cool animals and had a great ride on the wagon!

Getting stared down by an ostrich...

"Pebbles" gets some giraffe kisses...

Finally, taking a break in the shade.

Counselors challenged campers to a dance off!  Based on the Counselor in Training judges, the counselors won.  Campers are looking forward to a rematch!

We can't wait for next week's "Have no fear, superheroes are here" theme and our field trip on Wednesday to the Winston-Salem Dash Game !

Where in the World is... Dan Nicholas Park?

Camp Sunburst spent Week 5 of the summer exploring the many cultures that make up our world, particularly the Latino culture.

Campers made passports in craft with their own photos and began completing pages for other states and countries they have visited.

We also made and decorated pinatas for our fiesta on Friday!

Our oldest group of campers cooked flan for their snack!

On Wacky Wednesday, campers and counselors dressed up in clothing and costumes from other cultures!

"Sergeant" Sherry dressed up in clothing from Jamaica and "Scrappy" wore a traditional Japanese kimono.

Some of our Counselors in Training wore clothing from American, Indian, and Irish cultures before they left on their special Wednesday field trip!

CITs went out to lunch, bowling, and to the movies as their field trip finale to the first session of CIT camp.

We culminated our week with a fabulous Friday fiesta!

Campers sported party hats!

They enjoyed lunch on the decorated Huddle Hut.  CITs helped campers make quesadillas and served up chips and salsa!  We had a blast!

The field trip for the week was to Dan Nicholas Park in Salisbury, NC.  Campers visited the petting zoo, mined for gems, rode the train through the park, and had a ton of fun!  Once again, we had so much fun that we forgot to take pictures!

Next week we will get Wet, Wild, and Wacky as we bring out the water games and the slip-n-slide!  Campers will take a field trip to Lazy 5 Ranch to hang out with the cool animals!

Y Save the World and the Yadkin Pool!

As another week of Summer Camp came to a close, we learned about our enviornment during Y Save the World week, which focused on environmental education!

Campers crafted recycled flowers with seeds inside to plant at home.

Most fun of all, campers got their hands dirty smushing up newspapers, water, and flower seeds!

Huddle groups take time everyday out of their activities and spend time doing a devotion.  During this time, campers learn about the YMCA character traits, talk about sportsmanship, and even learn how to get along and work together.

Camp this year is complete with a "Chapel," a special space set aside just for devotion time.

Clinic for the week focused on painting.  Campers got to use their imaginations as they created fish out of paper plates and butterflies out of coffee filters!

We spent time playing basketball during our P.E. hour while dressed up in our craziest green outfits on Wacky Wednesday!

The coolest part of the very hot week was relaxing in the Splash Pad and Pool at the Yadkin YMCA!  Campers had a blast splashing around!  We can't wait to go back during Week 9 of Camp!

Next week we look forward to "Where in the World is..." week when we will learn about other cultures, make cool crafts, and eat food from another culture!  Campers will head to Dan Nicholas Park on their field trip!

Holidaze on Pilot Mountain...

During Week 3 of Camp Sunburst, we took some time to celebrate some of our favorite holidays.  From Mardi Gras to Halloween, our "Holidaze" ran the gamut!

Campers made Mardi Gras masks during their craft time.

Our clinic for the week was sewing...

Campers proudly display their handmade treasure stick bags from clinic!

Halloween costumes saw the light of day again on Wacky Wednesday!

And we had a special guest, "Salty Dog," visit for our closing assembly!  We learned new camp songs and had a blast...

The break in the summer heat was perfect for hiking on Pilot Mountain.

Stay tuned for updates about "Y Save the World" week and our awesome trip to the Yadkin Pool!

Sportsapalooza and the NC ZOO!

Session 2 of Camp Sunburst came and went in a hurry!  By far, the highlight of the week was taking campers on the first field trip of the summer......to the NC ZOO!

We didn't let the high temperatures slow us down!  Campers were excited to see giraffes, zebras, sea lions, gorillas, etc, but there were a few group favorites.

Of course, "Monkey" and her kindergarten group were thrilled to visit the monkey exhibit and catch a glimpse of her fellow monkey friends.  The X-Men group, led by "Mufasa", had plans to bring home Leroy the Polar Bear as a camp pet, but unfortunately the bus wasn't large enough to accomodate his travel. :)

Thursday's trip ended with a birthday celebration. Happy Birthday, Nathan!
And we ended the week with a surprise going away party for one of our favorite YMCA staff, "Big Red" Bryan Rogers.  Bryan has worked with camp at the Davie Y for 9 years and we had to send him out with style.  And of course, that meant water balloons and ice cream sundaes!  We had so much fun that we forgot to take pictures!  But, here's a look at some of our rousing assemblies of the week...

We look forward to next week----zumba, sewing projects, hiking at Pilot Mtn, and more!
