Exciting Travel Opportunity to Guatemala

Join the IS/PL 358 course to Guatemala and experience the peoples and environment throughout this diverse and culturally-rich country. Professors Esquibel and Parsons will lead this short study away and community-based learning experience taking place in May of 2016. For a look at the 2014 itinerary, click on “Itinerary” above.

May 16-24, 2014: Travel to Guatemala

Travel itinerary

May 16: Fly to Guatemala City and stay at SEMILLA
May 17: Travel to Quetzaltenango
May 18-22: Engage with communities around Sibinal & San Marcos, learning about land conflicts, gold mining, sustainable agriculture, youth issues, and Mayan spirituality-ecology
May 23-25: Travel to Nebaj and engage in Community-based learning about gender issues, agriculture, youth, and the civil war/genocide
May 26: Complete work in Nebaj, travel back to Guatemala City, visiting Chichicastenango market on the way
May 27: Relax in Antigua
May 28: Return to Kansas City

Travel Components and Schedule

Cost and Registration Information

  • Total Lab Fee: $1600 (includes all expenses: airfare, lodging, transportation, meals, etc.)
  • $200 nonrefundable deposit due upon course enrollment
  • $1400 payment due by January 6, 2016
