Paving S’pore IT road with manpower

In an e-mail interview with ZDNet Asia, Newson Ng, Microsoft solutions architect at Datacraft Singapore, said it is essential that the young generation understand and be passionate in whatever they do.

Quoting a line from Apple CEO Steve Jobs to "stay hungry, stay foolish", Ng added that there were no shortcuts in mastering the skills required to understand technology and how IT tools can be applied to better support an organization.

He noted that IT professionals need to maintain a balance between what technology can do and what the business needs. For this, they need to learn to listen and empathize with the client and understand the background of the problem, he said.

In place upgrade Windows 2003 DC to Windows 2008 DC

Here is the migration scenarios when you perform a migration from Windows 2003 DC to windows 2008 DC

Pre-condition before perform migration (in-place upgrade)

– Minimum Windows 2003 SP1

– No cross-platform migration x86 to x64 (common sense 🙂 )

– Enterprise Edition can only be upgraded to Windows 2008 Enterprise edition.

– Datacenter Edition can only be upgraded to Windows 2008 Datacenter edition

Next are the steps for migrating to Windows 2003 AD to Windows 2008 AD

Enable Virtual PC on Windows 7

This is to continue from my previous blog on enabling Virtualization on my Windows 7.

There are two type of virtualization in Windows 7, the first one

Windows XP Mode and Windows Virtual PC

Both of them available on Windows 7 Professional and Windows 7 Ultimate, allow you to run multiple Windows environments.

Windows XP mode will allow you to run a Windows 7 incompatible program to run in Windows7 as if it is running within the O/S
Edge technet give a good video on how this is running in Windows 7 (http://edge.technet.com/Media/Windows-XP-mode-for-Windows-7/)

Download XP Mode

In this screen cast we have a look at how it is setup up, what users see and get an idea of what it can do.

image

To run Virtual PC, meaning running a completely Different O/S here are the steps by steps on how to do it 🙂 :

image

Click on Windows Virtual PC mode to run the Virtual PC program, this is where you see the Virtual PC windows which is basically similar with your normal windows explorer windows.

image

To create a new virtual O/S simple clicking the Cretate Virtual Machine Button on the top of window

image

A wizard windows to create a virtual machine

image

Specify Memory RAM

image

Specify The hard-disk or attached an VDH file

image

and then that’s it your Virtual O/S is created.

image

To install the O/S , right click the virtual O/S and attached the ISO file into the DVD drive

image

Attached the DVD drive to an ISO image which is the O/S image. For this blog i am using Windows 2003 ISO installation file.

image

There you go, ready for your O/S installation.

WINDOWS 7 God Mode

Windows 7 GodMode puts nearly all OS control panels in one-stop location. here are the steps on how to set it up:

Simply create a new folder and re-name it as : GodMode.{ED7BA470-8E54-465E-825C-99712043E01C}

Upon renaming the folder, you will notice a change in the icon

Once that is done, the folder’s icon will change to resemble a control panel and will contain all of control options.

Now that you know how to do it, what are you waiting for? 🙂

BTW this is also works for Vista 32 Bit version but not the 64 bit of VISTA, FYI.

Check-out…

The fastest and Best way to Create USB installation disk for Windows 2008 Server

I discovered that you can use Windows 7 USB DVD Download Tool to install windows 2008 as well.

The advantage to following this process and creating bootable media is that it allows you to install Windows 2008 without having to first run an existing operating system on your machine. If you change the boot order of drives in your computer’s BIOS, you can run the Windows 2008 server installation directly from your USB flash drive or from a DVD when you first turn your computer on. (Please see the documentation for your computer for information about how to change the BIOS boot order of drives.) Good to see Microsoft using OSS software & putting it out as open source, even if it was forced. UI is simple, and it’s nice to see MS allow people to do something different with the installs.

1. Download Windows 7 USB DVD Download Tool and install it on your machine

Installation

To install the Windows 7 USB/DVD Download tool:

  1. Click to open the Windows 7 USB/DVD Download tool installation file.
  2. When you are prompted to either save the file to disk or run it, choose Run.
  3. Follow the steps in the setup dialogs. You’ll have the option to specify where to install the Windows 7 USB/DVD Download Tool.

To make a copy of your Windows Server 2008 installation disk using USB Thumdrive (min 4 GB):

Click the Windows Start button, and click Windows 7 USB/DVD Download Tool in the All Programs list to open the Windows 7 USB/DVD Download Tool.

In the Source File box, type the name and path of your Windows 2008 ISO file, or click Browse and select the file from the Open dialog box. Click Next.

Select the ISO file, which is the windows server 2008 iso file, click next to continue

Select USB Device to create a copy on a USB flash drive or select DVD disk, to create a copy on a DVD disk. If you are copying the file to a USB flash drive, select your USB device in the dropdown list and click Begin copying. If you are copying the file up to a DVD, click Begin burning.

If your USB Thumbdrive does not have sufficient size, you will have the following error message.

When your Windows Server 2008 ISO file is copied onto your chosen media, install Windows Server 2008  by moving to the root folder of your DVD or USB flash drive, and then double-click Setup.exe.
