Who says Portugal is known only for its excellent Iberian cuisine, gentle weather, Madeira and Port wines? Anyone who has traveled to the country will not only enjoy the sights and tastes of culturally rich Portugal but will soon realize it’s one of the finest golfing destinations in the whole of Europe. Food, wine and weather. Now, golf.
The two most popular golfing sites in Portugal are the Lisbon coastal regions in central Portugal and the Algarve coasts in the south both of which capitalize on the splendid year-round weather that makes golfing under the sun a memorable holiday experience for tourists and a rewarding leisure activity for local corporate executives entertaining their clients, guests and business partners.
Algarve
Without a doubt one of Europe’s best golf sites, Algarve is dotted with over 30 finely manicured golf courses each offering a wide array of hotel accommodation, resorts and vacation homes for anyone planning the ultimate in golfing vacation or simply having it as another vacation itinerary.
With a history as a beach destination due to its excellent coasts, it took Sir Henry Cotton to transform a rice field into a world-class golf course at Penina Golf Resort in 1966. Lisbon
But the one rising start of Portuguese golfing is Lisbon’s Atlantic coastline with jaw-dropping courses that now includes Oitavos adding to its superb line-up of first class golf resorts like Praia D’El Rey and Quinta da Marinha. It is not entirely surprising that old favorites get overshadowed by newer golf resorts.
But this all augurs well for a thriving tourism industry that positions Portugal as one of the best destinations for a golfing holiday under the sun while sipping some of the best Portuguese wines and experiencing native delicacies in between tees.
