IRC 2018

Posted: 12/09/2017 in Uncategorized

The Inter Regional Championships or IRC’s will be held over 2 days on 15/16 September 2018 and will be held at Mallory Park, Leicestershire.

The plan is as follows:

  • Day 1 Individual – Scoring as per usual
  • Day 2 Mixed Team Relay (MTR) – 2 races an IRC wave and a Youth/Jnr wave – all scores combined across both races for a MTR IRC Champs

The IRC is an annual event held as part of the British Triathlon Under 20’s Festival. It is an opportunity for the best 3 girls and 3 boys across both the TriStar 2 and 3 age groups in each of the 10 English Regions, Scotland, Wales and Jersey to race against each other.

With the advent of Mixed Team Relay at the Olympics British Triathlon believes it is very important for young athletes to be exposed to and experience the format. In 2018 the Under 20’s Festival sees the introduction of a Mixed Team Relay for all athletes across TriStar and Youth/Junior ages.

In 2018 there will be an opportunity for each Region to take a travelling reserve in each age category and the reserves will have the opportunity to race in the Mixed Team Relay.

A separate Inter Regional Relay competition will be held on the 2nd day of the Under 20’s Festival combining results from the TriStar and Youth/Junior teams. Athletes in the TriStar Relay will compete in the following order: TS2 girl, TS2 boy, TS3 girl, TS3 boy. Regions will allowed to enter up to 4 TriStar teams enabling reserves to race also.

Junior Race Series 2018

Posted: 12/01/2017 in Uncategorized

From 2018 the Junior Race Series results will be delivered for each Region by BTF IT department. For this to work those athletes wishing to take part in the SWS will need to sign up to home nations junior membership. Please follow the link under SWS Registration to sign up to membership. This is the only way, centrally, the junior results can be delivered for each region.  This will not stop anyone from taking part in the races but will mean only home nation members will feature in the individual league tables.  There are good reasons for juniors to become members and these are listed below but can also be viewed in a separate document under the heading SWS Registration and follow the link to Junior Membership:

Safeguarding

Juniors who are members of British Triathlon are insured when racing and training throughout their membership year:

  • Personal accident insurance
  • Public liability insurance
  • Legal Services

Triathlon England Junior Membership cost £24 which means that for £2 per month juniors are insured for racing and training throughout their membership year.

By mandating membership, British Triathlon can ensure that Juniors are sufficiently insured all year round. Many don’t realise that Day Membership provides public liability insurance only, and that is limited to the duration of an event. It’s also worth knowing that club insurance doesn’t actually extend to members so in order to be insured, juniors need to have their own insurance. Membership is a simple way to ensure that everyone is insured.

Sense of Community and Support

Junior Membership is a method of engaging and educating young people, and developing a life-long affinity with the sport (be it participating, volunteering or spectating). As members, children and young people should feel part of a national community of triathletes. Young members will receive limited edition gifts and get access to exclusive benefits and rewards, as well as educational material.

Investing in the future of Triathlon

British Triathlon is a non-profit organisation dedicated to supporting the development of triathlon. A strong membership base keeps us close to triathletes and enables us to form triathlon for the future. The importance of having onboard those members who will be running the sport in the future cannot be stressed enough.

Protecting our juniors whilst they train and race is at the heart of membership, ensures they are protected against accidents and is the right thing to do as a governing body.  As a part of the project it is hoped to build a children and young people’s web page that gives further details on all the activities that we offer our juniors.

Please read the attached links regarding BTF stance on the use of disc brakes:

https://www.britishtriathlon.org/news/british-triathlon%27s-stance-on-use-of-disc-brakes_8127

This began with British Cycling announcing disc brakes will be allowed in domestic road and circuit competitions from 1 January 2018: https://www.britishcycling.org.uk/about/article/20171114-about-bc-news-British-Cycling-to-allow-use-of-disc-brakes-in-domestic-road-and-circuit-competition-from-2018-0. This could mean the UCI and consequently ITU will follow suit.

Conscious of Christmas BTF have worked hard to get a statement on their website but cannot confirm what the ITU will do at this point as they simply don’t know.

2017 Presentations

Posted: 10/27/2017 in Uncategorized

The 2017 Presentations took place on Thursday 26 October with 36 children arriving at the University of Bath for a 2hr 50m pool session working on open water drills and technique followed by a 1hr run session before moving on to Odd Down Cycle Track in the afternoon.

Luckily the weather had picked up after a rather damp start to the day and the children enjoyed some bike drills for the first hour on the cycle track before the fun Team Duathlon took place. There were 2 races and the winners of the final event was Charlie’s Team, including Henry, Lucas, Missy, Mia and Macy.

After 5 hours of training the athletes enjoyed some hot food before settling down to the SW Presentations which included a brief summary of the years events and a few thank you’s.

Firstly, we were delighted Freddie Webb of the SW Academy was able to join us. For the past 2 years he has supported our IRC training camp as one of the coaches and been able to pass on his vast knowledge of racing experience to these young athletes. We also congratulated him on his recent selection for the English Talent Squad.

We also thanked Chris Maxwell and Juliet Paterson for their continued coaching support at the IRC Training Camp.

The final thank you and farewell went to Danny Symington who has supported the JSO over these last 3 years, helping organise many of the training days and more recently helping roll out the policy for Restricting Gears for Young Athletes proposed by BTF in 2015. He offered to travel far and wide within the Region to help make any necessary changes to bikes to ensure they successfully met the gear restrictions. This valuable work and the Regions support towards BTF’s ‘Restricted Gears Policy’ by trialling the restricted gears policy for all SWS races during 2016 no doubt contributed towards the success of Team SW’s results at IRC’s with Team Gold in 2016 and Team Silver in 2017. Thank you Danny.

Roger Martindale has very kindly agreed to take on the role of Technical Series Officer for the foreseeable future.
