SS Rex Ocean Liner - With ScaleDecks Wood Deck - Italian Line / Mid To Late 1930s

Resin Model Kit,   Box Condition: Sealed Mint

$669

Finally, the Pride of the Italian Line in 1/350 scale! The SS Rex is from the same team that brought you the 1/350 SS Normandie Ocean Liner. This four year project is a 100% new model and represents the Rex in her glory years of the mid 1930s. All design work was done in CAD by Ken Friend, a master modeler, designer and builder of experimental engines and test equipment and an engineer who specialized in CAD/CAM/CAE Systems Management and Implementation. All of the smaller parts are printed on ultra-high resolution 3D SLA resin printers. These parts meet and often exceed what is possible with injection molded plastic. Only the larger parts (hull, deck pieces and funnels)are cast resin. These are pressure-cast from de-aired molds to minimize air bubbles. The Italian Line advertised that "The Southern Route Is the Lido Deck Route." By virtue of avoiding the stormy and cold North Atlantic, travelers experienced a true outdoor lifestyle. The Rex was intentionally designed for this. For this model, extensive research and time was spent capturing the exact look of the colorful 1st and 2nd Class Aft Pool Areas- from the changing room & showers, grab rope on the pool, pool slide, stairs & diving boards, tables with umbrellas, recessed (covered) 1st Class Restaurant/Lounge and more. Because of the superior performance of 3D Printing, over 90% of the usual PE (photoetched) metal parts are now 3D printed resin. This is a vast improvement as they are no longer flat, but are true to the shape of the prototype. This also makes for a nearly complete model "out-of-the-box." Includes a real wood deck from Scaledecks. NOTE: railings are the only parts not included with the model shown. They are not required to complete the kit, however 1/350 railings are sold by a vast number of aftermarket sources. I will refer all buyers to the sources that I believe work the best with the kit.   more info >

Amodel Miasischev M-50A Bounder - Supersonic Soviet Bomber, 1/72, 72016

Plastic Model Kit,   Box Condition: Exc

$210

Rare and the only 1/72 scale injection-molded kit ever made of this giant Russian Supersonic Bomber. Never started. The parts are still in the internal factory sealed bags and includes decals and instructions. From the website nuke.fas.org comes this descriptions: OKB Myasishchyev began working on the supersonic intercontinental bomber M-50 in 1956. The aircraft was intended to be equipped with and the supersonic long-range M-61 cruise missile, also developed by OKB Myasishchyev. The bomber had a strategic strike capability due to its range of 10,000 km plus the 1000 km range of the missile. The M-50 had forward trailing triangular wings, a wing span of 35.1 meters and a length of 57.5 meters. Powered by four "16-17" engines developed by P.F. Zubets, two engine pods were mounted outboard on the wings and two less powerful engines at the tip of the wings. The prototype was constructed in 1959 and made the first flight on 27 October 1959. As engines the which were supposed to equip the airplane were at that time not yet available, on the prototype version two VD-7 engines and two VD-7g were used. In this configuration the demonstrated a speed of Mach 0.99. The second M-50, designated the M-52, carried the Zubets engines around which the aircraft had been designed. The engine installation was modified, and a second tailplane was added to the top of the fin. In December 1960, N. S. Khruschev, First Secretary of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of the Soviet Union (CPSU) made a speech at the Supreme Soviet session in which he proclaimed the inexpedience of the further development of military aircraft. The Soviet leader, fascinated by the triumph of Russian space technology and exploration, directed that all the tasks formerly executed by the combat aircraft be performed by guided missiles of various types. The Council of Ministers and the CPSU Central Committee issued a joint decree terminating work on new aircraft. The first victims of the decree were the Lavochkin and Myasischev aircraft design bureaus. They had to fully reorganize their work. V. Myasischev was appointed director of TsAGI. He was very disappointed at the fact that only a few of his M-50 and M-52 long-range supersonic bombers were produced. In 1960 development of the M-50 bomber was halted when OKB Myasishchyev was dis-established. Surprisingly little is known about the Bounder. One writer commented that it was "an outstanding failure which revealed an embarrassing lack of understanding of the problems of high-speed flight."

Adams USMC Winnie the Whale LVT(A)(4), 1/40, K157-149

Plastic Model Kit,   Box Condition: VG+

$135

Very rare 1958 high-quality model and the original issue from Adams. Features working bogies, flexible tracks, crew of two, four soldiers and more. Never started. It has been inventoried complete with all parts and includes decals and instructions. The box displays better than the 'very good+' grade but is rated as such because there is a small, narrow litho tear on the left short side. These molds must have had a very interesting history. The molds were cut in the late 1950s, either at Adams or by one of Revell's contractors. It appeared to be part of the Adams/Revell 1/40 line but only Adams issued the kit. UPC (Universal Power Master) had use of these molds in the 1960s are perhaps the early 1970s; however, the molds were probably in Japan as most if not all the UPC production occurred there. Around this point, SNAP plastics of Hillside, New Jersey acquired this kit along with many of the other ex-Adams military molds. While the UPC issues say 'Made in Japan' the SNAP issues say nothing of the origin of the manufacture; so perhaps they were made in New Jersey. Things get even more interesting with the Life-Like issue. How Life-Like came across the molds is unfortunately unknown but it may have been in a bulk-purchase of molds from SNAP since there were in the same general part of the country. This is simply conjecture, however.

The parts are still in the internal factory sealed bag and includes decals and instructions. This kit has a fascinating history. After Adams became disillusioned with plastic model kit production (perhaps partially due to Revell's founder), they sold most if not all of the molds to Athearn, the famous craftsman train kit manufacturer. Athearn reissued many of the kits under the SNAP name, which caused a great deal of confusion. Many thought they were snap-together kits; they couldn't have been more wrong. Athearn did a simple modification to each mold; where it would say ADAMS (usually on a part or area that did not show), they machined that away and put the SNAP logo. At some point Athearn stopped production and eventually sold the molds. However, during this time in the 1960s, UPC decided to reissue many of these kits. Evidently Athearn did the molding or a job shop did, while UPC produced their own boxes, instructions and decals. UPC stood for Universal Powermaster Corporation which was based out of New York City, NY. UPC did not cut their own molds, but bought kits already molded from other manufacturers (many in Japan) and re-boxed the kits in the USA. Scott Eidson, the famous artist best known for his artwork with Revell, also did UPC box art in the 1960s. All UPC production ended in the 1970s.
