The term "electric vehicle" refers to any vehicle that uses electric motors for propulsion, while "electric car" generally refers to vehicles designed to operate on roads powered by electricity.

The basic differences

The storage of power in an on board battery system is not enough to differentiate vehicles. Electric cars with motors powered by other energy sources are generally referred to by different names, solar cars refer to sunlight derived power sources, and an electric car powered by a petrol engine is a one of many varieties of hybrid car. Thus, an electric car that derives its power from an on-board battery pack is a form of battery electric vehicle
