There are 154 species of cuckoos in the world, and they’re all a fascinating bunch. I reckon I’ve seen around 60 or them, which still leaves a lot to go. I’d really like to see a Coral-billed Ground Cuckoo (South-East Asia), while to see any of the Madagascan couas would be pretty cool (there’s 11 of them). Barbara Petersen and Drew Magstadt were part of a network of cattle and diagnostic veterinarians who made the connection between cat and bird deaths at Texas dairies and cows getting sick with what turned out to be highly pathogenic avian influenza (HPAI, more specifically avian influenza Type A H5N1).

The AVMA American Board of Veterinary Specialties (ABVS) has received a letter of intent from a group of veterinarians wishing to seek recognition for a clinical wildlife practice specialty within the American Board of Veterinary Practitioners. The ABVS will accept public comment on the proposal through July 31.

The U.S. Department of Agriculture is starting to require negative tests for highly pathogenic avian influenza (HPAI, more specifically avian influenza type A H5N1) in dairy cattle before interstate travel. Further, HPAI will become a reportable disease in dairy cattle. Both changes are effective April 29. The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) also confirmed that it has found remnants of HPAI virus in commercially available milk.

The Federal Trade Commission (FTC) issued a final rule on April 23 banning noncompete clauses nationwide. The commission voted to approve the final rule 3-2, after determining that it violates Section 5 of the FTC Act, which prohibits “unfair or deceptive acts or practices in or affecting commerce.” The final rule is set to become effective 120 days after publication in the Federal Register.

Colorado recently enacted two bills related to veterinary medicine: one dealing with telehealth and the other on scope of practice for veterinary technicians. Gov. Jared Polis signed these into law on April 19 and March 22, respectively, after both bills received strong bicameral and bipartisan support.

As the sole candidate for 2024-26 AVMA vice president, Dr. Gary Marshall will be elected to the office by the AVMA House of Delegates (HOD) when it holds elections during its regular annual session this June in Austin, Texas. Dr. Marshall is an adjunct professor at Washington State University College of Veterinary Medicine, a feline practitioner, and the alternate delegate for Washington state in the HOD.

Back when I was a kid growing up in California’s San Mateo County in the 60s and 70s, my family would occasionally drive 45 minutes west and south to Bean Hollow State Beach. Even now, I remember my mother commenting how that goofy English name sounded so much more romantic in its original language: Arroyo de los Frijoles. Little did I imagine that someday I would live much of my life in that same Spanish language.
