Welcome

Hello, my name is John Webster.

I’ve supported file servers for. . .too many years. . .and have probably seen every problem imaginable.

Please, watch the video:

WHAT IS BACKUP?

What is File Server Backup

At least 5 copies, preferably 10, of your data.
Stored in at least one additional offsite location
Would span at least 3 months
With the restores tested regularly.

Restore

The most import part of restore is making an image backup of the server as is was before you try the restore.

Restores often fail. If possible do the restore on a alternate machine or disk.

Lastly, review the down link.

Down

Help our server is down

Losing important data is a physically painful experience. I have been there.

My advice. Take a break, get a snack and soda.

Less is more.

The less that is done, the higher the probability that your data can be recovered. Get a pad of paper and start keeping notes.
Write down what has happened so far, especially any error messages.

Avoid the temptation to try a repair, safe mode, or a rebuild. Search Google on “Server Data recovery” and call 2 or 3 places on the first page. Take notes while on the phone. Did I mention, less is more?

Find a non technical person to help you create a plan.
