Lao Kung

Chinese Healing Arts

Lao Kung is a health practice specializing in inherent acupuncture and moxibustion treatment. We have extensive experience with a wide range of chronic and acute ailments. Patients are assessed individually, taking into account their medical history, lifestyle and mental and emotional state. Acupuncture is considered a holistic and natural treatment in that it triggers the body’s phenomenal ability to heal itself. Acupuncture may not only relieve the symptoms associated with an ailment but also correct the root cause behind it. Many physical and emotional problems may be resolved and the symptoms of many chronic illnesses can potentially be managed without side-effects which is often associated or other forms of treatment. When ingesting “external” chemicals in generic quantities, they often disrupt normal harmonious functions within the body. With acupuncture the body is prompted/reminded to correct it’s own internal processes. This natural approach not only avoids unwanted side-effect but also improves the patients overall health and well-being.

Muscular, skeletal, neurological, hormonal, immune, digestive, circulatory, emotional and mental problems may all potentially respond well to acupuncture. In 1999 the World Health Organisation listed a wide variety of diseases or disorders for which acupuncture were favourably tested in controlled clinical trials.(List) During the last nineteen years the results of many more fMRI and RCTs were published, as well as meta-analyses of the effectiveness of acupuncture in the treatment of various diseases. Existing level of evidence is much higher than when the report was originally published. For in depth and extensive studies you can view the following journals Acupuncture in Medicine, the Journal of Evidence-Based Complementary & Alternative Medicine, or subscribe to the Society for Acupuncture Research to stay up to date with an average of 100 acupuncture-related articles published monthly in more than 50 journals.

Practice history

Lao Kung was started in 2002 by Arnold Erasmus, mainly as a Tui-Na practice. Lao Kung, pronounced “Lao Gong”, roughly translates as “palace of work” and is the acupuncture point in the centre of the palms, which seemed an appropriate name for a Tui-Na practice, as massage is mainly done with your hands.

In 2006 the emphasis of the practice shifted to specialization in acupuncture and moxibustion treatments as well as private Tai Chi and Chi Kung instruction. After being situated in Observatory for many years the practice moved to Kenilworth in 2013. The new venue has more rooms available and allows for improved business hours.

Arnold also runs donation based Self Nature Tai Chi classes in Pinelands, Cape Town for the upliftment of the local and surrounding community.
