HELP MAKE A DIFFERENCE

Our parish is always evolving. You make the difference at St. Luke's. We need volunteers to help in so many areas: serving at the altar, helping us make "a joyful noise", greeting all who attend our services, arranging flowers, helping with the Food Pantry and Community Lunch, and so much more. Anyone that would like to volunteer to help in any aspect of our parish life are asked to contact Greg Williams or Marilyn Pyeatt.

May 8
St. James Lutheran Church

You're cordially invited to the next Community Lunch on Wednesday, May 8 at St. James Lutheran Church, 1407 Eighth Ave., Altoona. As always, the luncheon is free, though we gladly accept donations. Interested in volunteering? We could really use your help. Contact Debbie Burgan.

"TRANSFORMING QUESTIONS"

"Transforming Questions", a 10-week free course focused on faithfully asking and discussing questions about our faith. Session seven is  on Wednesday, April 24. The topic is "Why Do Bad Things Happen?"

Did you miss the first few sessions? No problem, come to the next session. Everyone is always welcome to attend the sessions.

This course, a journey of reflection and formation, is the largest part of our collaborative Shaped by Faith grant. Sessions are held at the Hollidaysburg Masonic Lodge, 1008 Edgar Street, Hollidaysburg from 6:00-8:00 p.m. on Wednesdays: April 24; May 1; May 8; and May 15. Childcare will be provided.

The sessions will begin with a meal, followed by a presentation from Olin Mittan from Holy Trinity and Marilyn Pyeatt from St. Luke's. The largest portion of the evening will be spent in small groups discussing the questions of the day. Members from both congregations are currently attending training to help prepare them for facilitating discussion in the small groups.

This course is appropriate for both those who are just beginning to want to learn more about God and those who are long-time faithful church members. Registration for the course is now open. If you are interested in attending "Transforming Questions", please contact Marilyn Pyeatt.

HELP IS NEEDED!

YOUR help is needed to feed our neighbors. The next Food pantry distribution is on Thursday, April 25 from 2 until 5:30 p.m. with the usual preparations the two days previous.

On Tuesday the 23rd, we will pick up pet food starting about 1:30 p.m. We will load pet food into Greg's van and it will stay there until we unload it onto the table on 8th Ave. on Thursday the 21st. It saves handling and aching backs!

On Wednesday the 24th, Woody will be picking up our order from the Central PA Food Bank at Food for Families and will be at the church about 10-ish (depending on the weather, if the truck arrives on time, how far back in the truck our order is, etc.). The order has to be carried in, separated, shelved, refrigerated and so on. We will then start packing boxes for our neighbors. That afternoon, Woody will go to American Rescue Workers to see what they have for us in the way of produce, bread and sweets. He will bring it back to the church ASAP and that also has to be carried in, separated, shelved, refrigerated and so on. We will start at about 10:30 a.m. with all of this and hopefully we should be finished by about 4:00 p.m.

On Thursday the 25th, we will gather about 10:30 a.m. and continue packing boxes, moving food boxes into the rear of the sanctuary, putting out signs and tables, setting up tents, etc. so we are ready to begin distribution promptly at 2:00 p.m., continuing until 5:30 p.m. Then we have to put it all away; the signs, tables, tents, and any undistributed food. Luckily we have often been able to start this process earlier, sometimes as early as 4:00 p.m., so the whole process goes smoothly. Even so, folks who can stay till the end are GREATLY APPRECIATED!

We need your help! WE CAN'T DO IT WITHOUT YOU! Come when you can, leave when you must and remember that your help and your prayers are a blessing for all involved. If possible, let me know when you can be there to help.

IT'S ALL ABOUT LOVE FOR OUR NEIGHBORS

Dedicated to serving our community. Our monthly Food Pantry is open to anyone in need.

Thursday, April 25, 2023
2-5:30 p.m.

We are facing a crisis time in our ministry, and need donations of food and financial donations to continue being able to help our neighbors. We desperately need our community’s help!

Each month we need to purchase milk and eggs from local sources which can really add up. We are looking for sponsors to offset some of this cost. We need about 100 dozen eggs and 100 cartons of milk.

Here is our general “needs” list.

  • Jelly
  • Spaghetti
  • “Helper” type meals
  • Canned veggies - carrots, peas, green beans, corn, etc.
  • Canned fruit - any type
  • Can or pouch tuna and chicken
  • Canned baked beans
  • Pasta and pasta sauce
  • Mac & Cheese
  • Dinner kits, like “Helper” meals, with or without included protein like chicken
  • Peanut butter and jelly
  • Canned soups of all kinds
  • Dry soup mix
  • “Bucket meals” single serving, soup, pasta, Chef Boyardee type with ring tab tops - particularly helpful for our homeless folks

Paperwork for all food pantry clients is renewed every year, starting in July. If you didn't complete this already please bring the birth certificate for all kids 17 and under. Photo ID and a piece of mail with current address is needed for everyone 18 and older.

Contact Laura Gottfried-Letsche or Woody Pyeatt. Thank you!

MONETARY DONATIONS can sent to St. Luke's Episcopal Church or through Paypal.
