From Our Pastor

Welcome!

Dear Friends of St. Andrew's,

From the founding of our Parish in 1958, we have grown and developed with Sierra Vista - as partners in building up this great community we call home.

Over the decades, we sought to be active participants in every aspect of community life. We believe that serving the common good and making this city a place where people come first, where the least and most easily-overlooked are served and cared for, and where the quality of life is enhanced for all our fellow citizens, is an essential witness to our faith.

We hope our parish church is a place where all experience the Presence of God and the welcome of God's People. We pray that its beauty will speak a wordless invitation to those who are seeking, those who are wearied by life's burdens and those who are drawn to lift their hearts in prayer.

We thank God for giving us this opportunity to extend His blessings and to share our church and campus facilities with the Sierra Vista community.

The pulse of St. Andrew's is reflected through our ministries and individual parishoner efforts. I hope to highlight these achievements and bring focus to upcoming events in the article following this message.

Yours because His,

Bienvenido

Padre Greg Adolf

Did You Know...?

. . . That we have a “Building Our Church Fund” for special, unexpected needs for our two-campus Parish?

After the loan on the new (2006) church was paid off in an astonishing seven years, it was decided to continue the monthly offering for the “Building Our Church Fund” to meet two needs: to fund unexpected (and unbudgeted) expenses for maintaining the buildings and grounds of our two-campus Parish (St. Andrew’s and Good Shepherd Mission in Whetstone) AND to provide funding for special Mission projects here in the U.S. and world-wide. 25% of the “Building our Church Fund” donations is designated for Mission projects, such as the Mole St-Nicolas parish schools in Haiti, the Catholic School in Nepal, the Missionary Diocese of Santo Domingo in Ecuador, Via Christi Community needs in Nigeria, and the Mission in Kyrgyzstan, to name a few. The ”Building Our Church Fund” has been of enormous importance in meeting emergency repairs and necessary upgrades for our two-campuses. Most recently, the 32-year-old A/C unit at Good Shepherd Mission broke down, and because of the age of the unit, replacement parts could not be found. This replacement was not in the Parish Budget, but the money was there to purchase a new unit for Good Shepherd Mission, without having to ask our parishioners to make additional contributions! Numerous attempts have been made to deep clean the tile floors in Madonna Hall which have now seen 25+ years of very hard use. Because of the successful application of a new floor system in the Knights of Columbus’ ‘Columbian Hall’, it was recommended that this new flooring be applied over the existing tile in Madonna Hall, and after months of research, it was decided to go forward with this project, which again, will be funded by the “Building Our Church Fund” eliminating the need to ask for additional donations from our parishioners! Because of your continued generosity, we are able to pay for these two items, however, our reserves are somewhat depleted. The “Building Our Church Fund” has been a tremendous parish asset, allowing us to respond quickly to emergency needs – such as the new A/C unit at Good Shepherd and to purchase necessary upgrades – such as the flooring in Madonna Hall! Because of your faithfulness in contributing to the monthly “Building Our Church Fund” collection, we are enabled to be the best stewards possible of the beautiful buildings and grounds of our two-campus Parish! Would you prayerfully consider an additional gift to the building fund in order for us to have enough to take care of unexpected needs?" THANK YOU!

St. Andrew’s recently received a very generous bequest from the Estate of Ed and Marge Harms. The Harms wanted to continue their legacy of generosity to and through their Parish and did so through their Will! Have you considered making a bequest to St. Andrew’s in your Will?

Some years ago, parishioners Pat and Genevieve Berens named St. Andrew’s as a beneficiary in their Will, because Pat said, “I want to look down from heaven and see what I was able to build on earth!” A loving and generous thought!

Here's a convenient way to help your church and ensure your weekly gift is safe and secure.

Online Giving allows you to make your contribution electronically without the hassle of writing a check or carrying cash.  Your contributions are recorded aiding in yearend tax preparation and reducing parish staff bookkeeping time and effort.
Wait!  What happens if I go TDY or need to leave the area for a while?  No problem.  You will continue to support St. Andrew's and its ministries no matter where you go.  Your gift is always accounted for even when you are on vacation.
OK, so, what happens when the offertory plate is passed to me at Mass and I don't place anything in it?
Good question.  Matthew 6:4 says "...so that your giving will be in secret; and your Father who sees what is done in secret will reward you."
We are rapidly becoming a cashless society and Online Giving is the tool we are using today meeting our needs and looking ahead to the future.  We thank you as always for your support of our parish and all of our ministries.

Food For Your Soul

“It is most important that the Holy Eucharist becomes life’s focal point: that the Eucharistic Savior is the center of existence. In this way, God is given the best opportunity to be heard in the heart, to form the soul, and to make our souls clear-sighted and alert for the supernatural.”

//St. Benedicta Teresa of the Cross (Edith Stein) (1891-1942)

This Week's Catholic Quiz

This week’s Question: “What is a ‘friar’?”

The Answer to Last Week’s Question: “What is ‘intinction’?” From the Latin: ‘to dip’ – is a form of distributing Holy Communion. The consecrated Host is dipped into the Precious Blood (the consecrated wine) before being given to the communicant. It is the customary way of receiving Holy Communion in the Eastern-rite traditions and is now permitted in special circumstances in the Latin Rite.

Because of the risk of dripping the Precious Blood, a special purificator is held under the communicant’s chin during reception of the Blessed Sacrament by intinction. Many Protestant churches practice intinction as a form of communion.
