List of the 10 world’s biggest aircraft carriers: Aircraft carriers are the most powerful and versatile warships in modern naval fleets, serving as floating air bases capable of projecting air power across vast expanses of the ocean, with their eminence having been proven since World War I. Recently, as per the Naval News, China has reportedly launched the world’s first dedicated drone aircraft carrier by the name of Fujian Type 076, according to satellite imagery and an expert from the Jiangnan Shipyard on the Yangtze River. The launch was not reported until now and has raised questions about China’s intentions to advance the military use of drones and their deployment in battle. Today, as aircraft carriers remain the centrepiece of naval forces, providing unparalleled power projection capabilities and serving as symbols of national prestige and military might; here are the top 10 biggest aircraft carriers in the world. The new report examines how emerging technology trends in the maritime industry are emphasising the importance of ‘always-on’ connectivity for ships Inmarsat Maritime, a Viasat company, has launched a new report Digital Wave: Transforming vessels into floating offices and remote homes. The report explores the growing importance of ‘always-on’ onboard connectivity as ships and their crew become increasingly reliant on digital technology. In an era that sees ships functioning as ‘floating offices’, a reliable network connection optimises vessel operations and enhances life on board. Equally, the consequences of any loss of connectivity on safety, efficiency, and seafarer welfare can be severe. Compiled by maritime technology research firm Thetius, the report draws on interviews and survey data to provide insight into how crews and shore-based teams are using digital technologies today. It begins by examining emerging technology trends: specifically, how ships are becoming floating offices and the resultant demand for collaborative and...

IMO Member States call for an immediate end to ongoing attacks on ships and seafarers transiting through the Red Sea and Gulf of Aden. In a resolution adopted in London, IMO’s Maritime Safety Committee condemned the attacks as “illegal and unjustifiable”, posing a direct threat to the freedom of navigation in one of the world’s most critical waterways, while causing major disruptions to regional and global trade.  It is the first resolution to be adopted by IMO Member States on this issue since the Houthis seized the MV Galaxy Leader in November 2023. Decarbonization of the shipping industry is a complex task. Given this complexity, it is important to ensure that all options that can contribute are adequately considered and assessed. While alternative fuels for shipping are a major area of research and development, this report puts the spotlight on fuel cells as an alternative fuel conversion technology of potential interest to the shipping industry. Making fuel cells’ contribution to shipping’s decarbonization a reality will require both acceleration of technological development and increased awareness of this technology across the different stakeholders in the maritime value chain. To this end, this report seeks to provide an impartial status update on fuel cell technologies from a maritime industry perspective. This information will help ship owners and charterers make informed decisions as they consider whether to include fuel cells as a viable option in their short-, medium-, and long-term strategies. Greek shipowners control more than 20% of the global merchant fleet, in terms of deadweight tonnes – dwt (Figure 1), making Greece the world’s largest shipowning nation. The Greek-controlled merchant fleet is not only the largest in the world, but it is also dynamic, exhibiting steady growth. Over the past decade, the total capacity of the Greek merchant fleet, comprising of 5,543 ships, has seen a 53.5% increase. In fact, the Greek-owned fleet is the largest crosstrader in the world, moving cargoes between third countries with over 98% of its capacity. The international, cross-trading character of Greek shipping, together with its size, render it indispensable for global trade. Greek shipping is predominantly engaged in the bulk/tramp sector. The global shipping industry is recording a continuing decline in large vessel losses despite the sector facing growing risks. Global insurer Allianz released its Safety and Shipping Review 2024 which shows shipping losses hit an all-time low, maintaining a trend that has been developing in recent years. The review contends that despite the global fleet grappling with growing volatility and uncertainties from war and geopolitical events, climate change, and the resurgence of piracy among other risks, the sector lost just 26 large ships in 2023. This represented a decline of more than one-third year-on-year and by 70 percent over the past decade. In 2022 and 2021, a total of 41 and 59 losses were recorded respectively while 729 ships have been lost over the past decade. Allianz highlights the decline in losses is taking place in an increasingly dangerous environment. The shipping industry is confronting a broad range of...

On Saturday, a storm hit the U.S.-run aid pier off Gaza’s coast, breaking four Army landing craft loose from their moorings alongside the floating structure and sending them drifting onto the beach. Two went ashore in Gaza, and two more are on the beach within Israeli territory to the north, according to the Wall Street Journal.  No one was hurt in the casualty, but photos released by Reuters appear to show a handful of U.S. troops in a temporary “feet-dry” status on the sand in Israel. It is unclear whether servicemembers were forced to disembark on contested territory; the White House has pledged that no American boots will touch the ground during the operation. In a statement Saturday, the Pentagon reiterated that American troops will not enter Gaza. The aid pier remains fully functional, and “efforts to recover the vessels are under way with assistance from the Israeli Navy,” U.S. Central...
