UPDATE ON OUR WORK IN UKRAINE

May 20, 2024

The war in Ukraine continues. Delayed military aid to Ukraine is having its impact on the battlefield and on the morale of the nation. In spite of these obstacles and the endless bombings, Ukraine’s determination and resolve is unbroken.

We remain in awe as we watch our Kyiv office and coordinators continue their work supporting our orphans. They do this through constant bombings, sirens, blackouts, and leaving their homes for shelters.

We have completed the distribution of stipends for the first half of 2024. We are distributing the Marketing Research Education Fund’s third and final grant for eligible orphans for the 2023 / 2024 school year. We are grateful to them for the financial support they have provided.

The status of orphans continues to be in flux. Through the diligent efforts of our coordinators, we are able to communicate with, and transfer funds to, most of our orphans. We continue to transfer money to Ukraine via Self-Reliance NY Federal Credit Union. Self-Reliance kindly gave us a $10,000 grant to cover the cost of the money transfers. Their financial and logistical support is crucial for us to continually transfer money to individuals in Ukraine swiftly and efficiently. Our transfers number in the hundreds. We are immeasurably grateful to their dedicated staff and thank Self Reliance for their great generosity in this time
of need.

Our policy is not to turn down anyone who requests our assistance during this dire situation in Ukraine. We help families and individuals who are destitute, who have lost their homes, and who are overwhelmed with medical needs.

We help soldiers returning home with debilitating medical conditions. The Ukrainian government’s aid to these soldiers is a small, fixed monthly amount. For some, this is not enough to cover the care and medicine they need, and they turn to us for help to cover those additional costs.

Only through the generosity of our benefactors, donors and sponsors are we able to perform this work.  We thank each and every one of you for continuing to support the work Orphans’ Aid Society is doing in Ukraine.

Maria Jowyk founded Orphans Aid Society in 1992 to aid and support orphans in Ukraine.  Over the years, through Maria Jowyk’s hard work, OAS grew into a grass roots organization throughout Ukraine.  Thousands of orphans became recipients of Maria Jowyk’s love and care.  They received monetary aid, clothing and support.  Many finished higher education, became professionals, and went on to lead full, productive lives.  As a result of Maria Jowyk’s dedication, persistence, and love for Ukraine, Orphans Aid Society thrives to this day, continuing her great legacy.
