Lucky Escape

A Rock Kestrel/Rooivalk [Falco tinnunculus], fell out of a nest here in Yzerfontein a couple of months ago and was rescued from the unwelcome attention of adult pheasants and other more carnivorous creatures.

His first meal out of the nest was some sirloin steak as the shops were out of minceSurprised.  A couple of days later he was put out on the balcony and caught the attention of his parents who were still feeding his siblings in the nest high above the ground but not too far away.  The parents started bringing him food on the porch and then take the leftovers back to the other 2 chicks in the nest.  Meals now of course included mice and lizards.

A couple of days later with his feathers in good condition from all his flying aerobics, he received a visit from his siblings who are now out of the nest.

I’m sure he will soon embark on a vacation with his family!

  1. Hi there

I have just watched a clip on Kwele about a fellow who manufacturers the most delicious looking deli meat products. Date Sat 13 June around 6:20pm. I missed the names except for the mention of Yzerfontein and possibly KleinDeli or something. Do you perhaps know who it was that was featured?

    Many thanks

Message to Darling / Western Cape Community:
Our Western Cape has been shocked this past week by a fatal attack on a farm owner in Klapmust area. This, after numerous similar cases, has resulted in communities saying ENOUGH IS ENOUGH. Voilent crimes are stealing away our loved ones and permanently affecting those left behind. No community, irrespective of race or social stand, is spared of this horror.
On Monday morning from 7h00 to 8h00 we are uniting in Darling, Malmesbury, Melkbos, Paarl and wherever else possible in a silent protest agains violent crime and farm attacks.
I beg you to please forward this message to all in our Darling community. We have a chance to stand together in this effort, let us not waste this moment🙏🏼

  4. Hi, we are guests here at Pearl Bay for about 3 weeks and we enjoy every morning our walk at the beach. And every morning we have more than 2 bags of litter each we are collecting at the beach. We would highly appreciate if there could be some professional dustmen and at least some dust bins at the entrances to the beach.
