La Chimera (15)

"A joyous, masterful work of folk magic" Sight & Sound

Josh O'Connor stars alongside Isabella Rossellini in Alice Rohrwacher's LA CHIMERA as an archaeologist with a mystical connection to the ancient world.

Everyone has their own Chimera, something they try to achieve but never manage to find. For the band of tombaroli, thieves of ancient grave goods and archaeological wonders, the Chimera means redemption from work and the dream of easy wealth. For Arthur (Josh O'Connor), the Chimera looks like the woman he lost, Beniamina. To find her, Arthur challenges the invisible, searches everywhere, goes inside the earth -- in search of the door to the afterlife of which myths speak. In an adventurous journey between the living and the dead, between forests and cities, between celebrations and solitudes, the intertwined destinies of these characters unfold, all in search of the Chimera.

Takumi and his daughter Hana live in a village close to Tokyo. The serenity of the place is about to be disrupted by the imminent arrival of a glamping site, which will endanger both the ecological balance of the plateau and their way of life.

From the director of Oscar® and BAFTA winner Drive My Car.

“Compositional quirks and unhurried direction turn this tale of a Tokyo company buying up land near a pristine lake into a complex and mysterious drama” ★★★★ The Guardian

Strike: An Uncivil War (N/C 15+) + Pre-recorded Q&A

On 18 June 1984, at the height of the 1984-85 Miners’ Strike, Orgreave Coking Plant in South Yorkshire became the site of the bloodiest day of the longest and most violent industrial dispute in British history. The media subsequently appeared to lay blame for the violence at the feet of the strikers. Daniel Gordon’s comprehensive documentary doesn’t just overturn this fabrication, it portrays what took place as planned action on the part of the Thatcher government, with the Prime Minister determined to seek redress for the National Miners’ Union’s victory over the Conservative government in the early 1970s and to forever break the union’s role at the heart of British working class society. Released on the 40th anniversary of the battle, and featuring first-hand accounts and archive footage, this is a searing portrait of that tragic event.

Screening includes a Q&A with the following: Chris Peace - Orgreave Truth & Justice Campaign, Kate Flannery - Orgreave Truth & Justice Campaign, Kevin Horne - former miner, Ian Mitchell - former miner, and Daniel Gordon - director.

Angelou on Burns

Maya Angelou’s ode to Rabbie Burns.

Dr. Maya Angelou, the African-American writer and poet, discovered and was inspired by the work of Robert Burns at the age of 8. She was mute and living in a small hamlet in Arkansas. "He was the first white man I read who seemed to understand that a human being was a human being and we are more alike than unalike".

The film follows Maya Angelou on a pilgrimage to Burns country in which she explores the strong parallels that exist in their lives - poor beginnings, early love of literature, fame, liberty and equality, music, religion, love and passion - and meets the enthusiastic and fanatical Burnsians, who welcome her to ceilidhs in Ayrshire and Edinburgh in honour of her visit and Burns' genius.

First broadcast in 1996 to commemorate the bicentenary of Burns’ death, we are screening the documentary in partnership with Dumfries and Galloway Pensioners for Independence to mark the anniversary of his death. The group promotes Scottish Independence but are not linked to any political party. They welcome Angelou’s observation that “poems transcend race, time and space” and her recognition that Burns is a symbol for “freedom and Scotland’s dignity, independence and humanity”.

We are delighted to welcome Hugh McMillan, poet and writer for post-film discussion.

Orlando, My Political Biography (12A) plus Introduction + Post-film Discussion

The film screening will feature an introduction and post-film discussion led by Dr Connor McMorran.

Blurring the lines between reality and fiction, this fascinating film by trans writer, philosopher and activist Paul B. Preciado – a leading figure in the study of gender and body politics – is a playful, moving, metatextual documentary expanding Virginia Woolf’s novel Orlando: A Biography, in which the protagonist changes gender midway through the story to become a 36-year-old woman.

A century after Woolf wrote her novel, Preciado decides to send her a cinematic letter telling her that Orlando has emerged from her fiction to live a life she could never have imagined, organising a casting that brings together 26 contemporary trans and non-binary people, aged 8 to 70, to embody the character. Reconstructing the stages of his own personal transformation through authentic voices, writings, theory and images, Preciado’s meticulous, bracingly intellectual yet highly accessible film eschews pigeonholes, inviting us to see instead how everything is constantly in flux.

Two Tickets to Greece (15)

TWO TICKETS TO GREECE, an irresistible French comedy about female camaraderie and new beginnings, stars Best Actress César winner Laure Calamy (Full Time, My Donkey, My Lover & I, Call My Agent!), Olivia Côte (My Donkey, My Lover & I) and Academy Award Nominee Kristin Scott Thomas (The English Patient, Two Weddings and a Funeral).

Recently divorced, and watching helplessly as her only son leaves home, 40-something Blandine (Olivia Côte) is struggling to find her footing again. When her childhood former best friend Magalie (Laure Calamy), loud and fearless, suddenly resurfaces, the two women reconnect, and Blandine reluctantly allows herself to be spontaneous for a change. They decide to take the summer trip to the Greek Islands they had always dreamed of as teenagers, but, as they head off towards their destination, it's apparent that Magalie's very different approach to vacationing - and life - could lead Blandine to her breaking point. Kristin Scott Thomas co-stars as Magalie’s free-spirited expat friend and mentor.

Billy Connolly: Big Banana Feet (12A)

Big Banana Feet is a rarity. A documentary centring on a tour of Ireland by Scottish performer Billy Connolly, which took place in 1975. The film had a limited release in cinemas in the UK, followed by a small video release, then the distributor went bust and the film went missing. Thanks to the tenacity of film archivist Douglas Weir, who works at the British Film Institute, the BFI has secured the film's future.
