"Petoskey" latest sturgeon released into Cass by St. Lorenz students
“Petoskey” is now a part of the Cass River watershed, thanks to the annual Lake Sturgeon Release event by the St. Lorenz Lutheran School’s seventh grade class.
St. Lorenz celebrated the release of their sixth sturgeon, raised in the classroom as part of the Sturgeon for Tomorrow’s Sturgeon in the Classroom program (SITC).
The release took place Friday, May 3, just belove the rock ramp in the Cass River on a temperate early afternoon. Named “Petoskey,” the fish weighed in at .86 pounds and measured 18 inches in length.
In addition to the seventh-grade class members, also in attendance was Mike Kelly with program sponsor Saginaw Watershed Initiative Network (WIN), Michelle VanderHaar with the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, Meaghan Gas with Michigan Sea Grant, Bob Zeilinger, chairman of the Cass River Greenway Committee, and St. Lorenz Administrative ......
