Selecting a Theme for your Blog – Points to Consider
Default design – is it suitable?
The original design of a theme should always be attractive enough to select it for the blog. It must possess the desired characteristics and its layout and functionality should be suitable for the blog. The point here is that if its basic structure doesn’t fulfill the requirements of your blog, it must not be selected. Later on you may incorporate the required changes but initially the theme must satisfy the basic needs of your blog.
Theme’s Compatibility with the upgraded version of the blog’s platform
You may find several themes with a nice design and packed with useful features but it’s important to know whether the theme is compatible with the current version of your blogging platform. If not it will only cause problems. Also, a theme’s compatibility with plugins and widgets must be ascertained as they play an important role in enhancing your blog’s functionality.
Select a theme relevant to the blog
A theme which relates to the content it offers or the niche it belongs to will be able to establish a quick connection with the visitors. Therefore it is common but an important consideration that the theme should be relevant to the blog and its type. To say for example, a business blog ought to have a different theme than a personal blog as they both have a different purpose.
Target audience – Bear them in mind while making a selection
As a blog is meant to be used by the readers, it should be made in accordance with what they would like to see. For example, a blog for students can have a vibrant colorful theme but the same theme will not work for professionals who may prefer a sober one. It is therefore, important to understand the target audience and then select or design a theme which matches their taste and will keep their interest.
Focus more on layout than colors and images

Theme should be SEO Friendly
As SEO plays an important part in increasing the visibility of the blog and helps it reach the target visitors, it must be assured that the theme selected is SEO friendly. It must have features that favor SEO which in turn will help popularize the blog. If you’re using WordPress, you can use some of the WordPress SEO plugins.
Ensure Cross Browser Compatibility
As you do not know what browser your visitors may be using to view the blog, it is required to select such a theme which is compatible with all major browsers. This will make the blog accessible by all, irrespective of the browser used and thus will prevent any loss of visitors.

Thank you, Paul, this is very helpful. I love my theme that I use now for my blog, but the theme is no longer being supported. With some WordPress upgrade in the future, I will have to choose a new theme, so it’s helpful to be reminded of the considerations.
A great little list of simple pointers for those thinking about staring up their own blog. However, what about the WP theme Starkers? “Starkers is a bare-bones WordPress theme created to act as a starting point for the theme designer.”
Surely as a designer, you want your blog/website to stand out from the rest, so why go for a theme that has the potential of being used by millions of others?

I’ve just started out blogging and to be honest I’m having a hard time figuring out how SEO friendly the theme is – already on top of the other bullets.
Hello, Paul……………… Extraordinary resource men! I like your contribution, this post will surely help a lot for the beginners in blogging Thank you!
One of the things I look for from an SEO point of view when selecting a template is to look where the h1 tag is positioned. It should be above the other header tags (h2, h3 etc) in the HTML and it should be possible to specify a different h1 tag for each page.
This is a great set of tips – i’m just in the process of setting up a blog so found this really helpful. Thanks!
